June and Inobe's Dating Game is a New Adult contemporary Romance
A basketball player and a cheerleader fall in love in this cute book. I've been meaning to read it since it came out, but only got around to doing it now. It's also my last book for Sports Romance September on Storygraph.
It was a super fast read, I blinked and I was halfway through. There's more dialogue than descriptions which is why it moves so fast. I wish more things happened though, because outside of these two dancing around each other, not much else was going on.
There was the anonymous troll thing, and I really didn't see the reveal coming so bonus points for that. But I think June and Inobe had enough things to work through even without the added pressure of that account.
I liked the writing, although I agree with the other reviews saying more edits were needed. I spotted several typos or missed words in sentences that didn't take me out of the story, but my brain did take a few seconds to rearrange or add in the missing words.
The romance itself was sweet and I wish we got even more of it. There were a few scenes where I wanted to scream at June for avoiding defining their relationship. I knew she had her reasons because of her ex, but before learning that I was just like "CALL INOBE YOUR GIRLFRIEND COME ONNN".
All in all this was a fun read and I'll be following Jillian Amena to see what she puts out next.
3.75 This was really cute if you're looking for a gen z new adult college sapphic romance this is the book. It definitely needs a bit more editing tho.
First off, this book reminds more of a mature Heartstopper and Euphoria with college elements but the book is marketed as a YA and NA book.
I finished reading this book and I would say that I really liked the concept of basketball and cheerleader romance novel and also enjoyed readying the dual-pov of both June and Inobe. The opening chapter really hooked me and I liked how to captured June's entire personality and what she struggles with as a tomboy. I also like how Inobe was portrayed as the "nice" cheerleader instead of the typical mean girl cheerleader trope. The book was well written, had a great balance of smut and fluff which wasnt a chore to read.
Some issue I had with this book was the book still needs some editing but it was still well-written. I also hated how the only openly gay character (Raine) was portrayed in a stereotypical manner like how women write gay men in their books. I also hated how Inobe's entire identity was about cheerleading and June. It felt like the book was meant to be written in June's perspective only.
Other than a few editorial misses on grammar and spelling errors. This is a solid story, it can be long winded at certain points but overall it's a good young adult read.
