There was hate.
And then there was the love that hid behind it.
Maddy Roberts knew all about hate—she hated what was done to her, hated the person she’d become, hated the way she’d hurt the people who loved her.
But now she was doing her best to turn her life around.
Lucas Clark—her brother’s close friend and one of the star hockey players on the San Francisco Gold—wasn’t like her. He had his life together…
And…sometimes he looked at her like he thought she might be the key to his universe.
Like he thought she could be different. With him.
Like maybe he thought she could be the person for him.
Forever.

Story: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Trope: enemies to lovers
Angst: 😱😱😱😱😱
Smexy: 🔥🔥1/2

Super emotional journey of redemption! I love a good enemies to lovers story, but I wondered how these two characters would find their way to each other. I should have had more faith, lol! Mads journey was absolutely heartbreaking and she absolutely deserved to find her HEA. Lucas has his own difficulties from his past he needs to move on from and I was so glad to see them accomplish this together. Well written and super angsty, Changed will definitely hit you in the feels!

This was great. Two characters with not a lot of love to send their way and before you know it, there is nothing you want more than their happiness. Again my catnip of reading MCs who step up to be non bio parents I cannot get enough of it. It definitely feels like romance reasons that there are so many NHL players with rubbish childhoods, I imagine it is a very expensive sport and surely there is a limit to how many struggling kids can be picked out of obscurity, but we are in romancelandia so I’m happy to run with it. I am so happy Mads and Lucas were able to give Vivi what she needed, I wish Georgia had made an appearance in the epilogue

My first book in the Gold Hockey series, but I will return to read from book one! Changed is the eighteenth book in the series, so I will be in reading heaven. While I did not know all the characters initially, I quickly caught on and enjoyed this emotional roller coaster of a read. It did leave me wanting more and thinking about the book a day later.

Mads or Maddy has not had an easy life and reading about her story is heartbreaking. Seeing how she has grown and fighting to right her wrongs. Lucas took me a little longer to embrace; he can be a bit much at times, but my connection to Mads and her story had me reading on. I am glad I did!

Thank you to the Author for the advanced copy; this is my voluntary review.

5 Star review of Changed (Gold Hockey #18) by Elise Faber

I haven't read all the books in the Gold Hockey series, but the ones I have read I found to be well written and entertaining. This is Lucas Clark and Maddy Roberts story and it was a good addition to the series.

This was an emotional story that ticked the boxes for me. My heart broke for Maddy and all that life has thrown at her and I was frustrated with Lucas at times.
Their journey was challenging and rocky at times, but it was worth it.

Once Lucas gets his head out of the sand, it was entertaining to watch as their relationship developed. Ms. Faber drew me in and held me hostage from the first chapter with a story that held drama, heat and romance.

Changing for the better!

Mads has been through so much in her life and she's trying to do better with her life. Knowing she's made a mess of some things in her life she is attempting to make amends. Her brother, Ben knows she's doing better and their relationship is flourishing. His team mate Lucas doesn't see that and is always antagonistic towards her. When she's attacked in the car park, Lucas starts to see the new Mads, the one who is doing everything she can to be better. Can this new found Mads be the person that helps Lucas heal.from his demons? Can they find something special between them before the past rears its head again?
I loved this book, dropping back into the Gold Hockey team was like coming home.

What a journey these two have had. I was afraid to start this book to be honest with you. Things we learned about Mads in her brother's book, broke my heart for her. She has experienced things I wouldn't wish upon anyone. And Lucas was a giant asshole, but he was trying to protect his best friend, her brother.

But what we came to learn in this story is more about how he reacted to her the way he did. And when he finally let himself be honest and admit he had feelings for her, everything came falling into its place. The story was emotional, heartbreaking and so beautiful it broth tears to my eyes more than once.

And I'm not sure why Elise Faber has a beef with us, but the epilog or the start for the next book in the series, is not sitting well with me at all.. Why?! I know she will make it all alright but damn it, I'm not OK.

CHANGED is part of the Gold Hockey series, and we finally get Mads and Lucas' story. Mads is Ben's sister, and we have met her in previous stories, where we found out she was a drug addict, and then a recovering addict. Now, she is fighting hard to make amends to those she has hurt in the past. Most people accept her recovery and help her make amends. Not Lucas though. Oh, no! He's been a hard-ass from the beginning but we find out why. Lucas has been on the receiving end of addicts who say they are quitting but don't. THAT is why his trust in Mads is non-existent. He is constantly doubting her word and waiting for her to mess up. When he makes the realisation that Mads is trying, and he has been a jerk, he will do anything he can to make up for his past behaviour.

This was an emotional story, with plenty here about how the actions of family can have an effect on a child/young adult/whatever, especially when drugs and abuse are in the mix. Lucas is self-aware enough to realise he is letting his own past affect his current views and tries to amend that.

Along with Mads and Lucas, there is a whole side story going on with Brit and Stefan, although they don't overshadow the main story. And then there is a final moment with Rome that I did not see coming! I knew he was being mentioned but simply thought it was because his was the next book in this series.

This was a great addition to the series, full of emotions and feelings, where life doesn't always run smoothly or as expected, but where family can be found to either make up for the one you have or to enhance the one you already have.

A fantastic read that I definitely recommend.

Talk about your enemies to lovers romance that is gripping and emotional all at the same time. Ms. Faber delivers us Mads and Lucus's story that will rip your heart out but put it back in place full of love and caring. This story does deal with delicate subjects and Ms. Faber does an incredible job of writing them with care and not just putting words on paper. I was at times emotional and my stomach was in knots but other times I had a smile on my face.

Changed is all about that, Change. Both Lucas and Mads have changed from the broken souls that they once were but there is a side of Lucus that doubts that Mads has changed. The two of them have this relationship that seems to be full of hate, well Lucas seems to be full of hate. Is it because he cares about this Gold brother Ben and does not want to see him hurt again by his sister Mads? Or is it because his hate is hiding the attraction and feelings that he has for Mads? Mads had so much hurt and trauma from her past that you could understand why she did all the things that she did and how she reacted to certain situations. She also had a heart of gold and that spilled over to what she did at the centre and for the kids that were there. Could that love that she has ever spill over to Lucas who she thinks hates her? Lucas shows a side of him that is caring, and loving and he really is a big teddy bear but it took a long time for that side of him to come out. Talk about swoon-worthy when he turns his life upside down for Mad and what she wants. He is all about making her happy and showing her that she is worthy and deserving of all the good things that happen in her life.
This book is one that will have your emotions all over the place but it is well worth the read.

Changed is set within the Gold Hockey series. The romance can stand on its own, but the characters have been present in previous books and their story is richer if you know their whole backstory. Lucas does not trust Mads not to mess up her brother’s life, but if he’s honest with himself, he’s messed up from his own past and can’t help but fall for Mads. A work in progress, Mads is doing her best, but when a chance comes to follow her heart, can she prove to everyone she’s changed and deserves love?

Wow. Just, wow. This book was highly charged from the very beginning! I was taken on a quite wild ride that parts I was expecting and others I was completely surprised, but I loved every moment I spent within these pages! Mads and Lucas are an amazing team, softening each other’s sharp edges, accepting one another’s past, and giving their hearts to the other willingly. I adored this couple. Mads is so strong. She’s been through so much, and has so much guilt, but I absolutely loved watching her come into her own strength and realize that she is worthy. Lucas wasn’t always the best of guys for her, but once he changed his mind and set his heart on her, he never gave up, never let go, and always shower her kindness, love, and support. And I was all for it! Add in the love they shared for a hurting teenager, and it was just about the recipe for a full swoon! The ending threw me off a little, as I was not expecting anything that happened. It’s still a happily ever after, though, for this couple, so I’ll gladly take it! Just not sure what to make of the rest of the reveals at the end of the book! Seriously, though, this was a fantastic read and I loved it!

I have read each and every Gold Hockey book that Elise has released, and I have loved them all. Changed was no different. I was hooked immediately.

It had been a while since the previous book, so I had to refresh my memory on who Mads and Lucas were. Mads is Ben's sister, and Lucas plays for the Gold. Mads hit a difficult path, and made some choices in her life that were less than desirable. Fast forward to now, and she's trying to make amends. First with her brother, and then also with Georgia. Not only that but she has a teenager who she's formed a bond with. Livi has had a rough life, and Mads just wants to help her however she can. Meanwhile Lucas is holding a grudge on behalf of Ben. He's witnessed how Maddie's history has messed with Ben's life, and he wants to protect his friend at all costs. Except somewhere along the line he's fallen for Mads, and has seen the woman she truly is.

I adored this story. The storyline was so good. The characters were enjoyable. I also loved the setup for the next book. Although I have to admit that setup has me worried. I'm also hoping that Elise writes Pascal's story, as I am oh so curious.

The storyline with Nick was a bit difficult to read, as well as everything that occurred with Maddie's mom. They were difficult to read, but oh so necessary for the overall storyline.

I continue to fall hard for the Gold family, and will be reading how ever many more Elise writes in this setting.

Mads has made mistakes in her life. And more than a few. She’s hurt people she loves, and many more. So she understands why her brother’s teammate Lucas is skeptical of her reformation and return to her brother’s life. Which doesn’t make it hurt any less when he casts doubts or aspersions her way, especially because his bad attitude doesn’t detract from his good looks or her draw to him. Lucas has known people with Mads story in his life—or so he thinks—and he’s not about to trust her as far as he can throw her. Sure, she’s showing up and making an effort now, but he’s ready for her to backslide. If only he could keep his distance…or his hands to himself. But the draw to Mads’ is undeniable, and as he learns more about her past and all she’s doing to try to make up for her past misdeeds now, it grows even stronger. But they both have a past, and some secrets are darker than others. Some that could tear apart what they’re building before they get a chance to see it through. Add in some drama from the inaugural couple of the Gold and a bombshell about another teammate at the end…and Changed is an installment in the Gold that’s not to be missed! A grumpy/sunshine romance with enemy-to-lovers vibes and the added drama of dating a teammate’s sister…and more than Mads’ and Lucas’s connection has the potential to be explosive.
I love coming back to the Gold time and again, and seeing the ways that Elise’s hockey series’ continue to intersect and grow, and I’m already more than ready for the next installments in the hockey universe. But ESPECIALLY the next Gold, because returning to my favorite Gold couple, and one of the first couples of Elise’s I ever read, promises to be somewhat bittersweet. Changed was well worth the wait, and sets up some serious anticipation for the debut of an upcoming series to boot! Elise’s hockey universe is a great choice for fans of Natasha Madison’s hockey universe, Helena Hunting’s Pucked/All In series’, and Teagan Hunter’s Carolina Comets. There’s a sense of family amounts the teams, and everyone connected to them, and all the feels!

Changed, book nineteen in the Gold Hockey series is about so much more than hockey. It definitely deals with some tough subjects as both Mads and Lucas pasts were not pretty yet they both found a way to come out on the other side and be people who not only wanted better for themselves but were willing to help others who have faced similar challenges in their own lives, especially Olivia.
Mads Roberts had a really tough childhood and now she is working hard to pay it forward and help kids to find their own way out of all the bad in their lives and she wants to show them that they can be so much more than their lives currently dictate and their past don’t define them.
Lucas initially seems to have misjudged Mads and much of that is because of his past, his family and their addictions and how it affected him growing up. Now, he is seeing her in a new light and as she says, second chances are all about what you do with them, so she is giving him another chance and boy, he makes the most of it and is able to redeem himself in her eyes.
I loved Mads and Lucas together. Their pasts has some similarities and has allowed them to bond but it is when they truly open up and share their pain is when their hearts become involved and allows them to find the happiness they both deserve.

Gold Hockey Book #18

Maddy Roberts hasn't had an easy life growing up and it's left her skittish and not really fighting for herself and hating the person she had become. In the process she has hurt the people that love her including her brother Ben but she is doing the best she can at turning her life around.

Lucas Clark plays on the San Francisco Gold hockey team and is close friends with Ben, Maddy's brother. His life wasn't great either but he managed to turn it around and get it together.

When issues arise involving Maddy and a young girl from where Maddy works, Lucas steps up to be there for both of them. He is finally seeing Mads for who she really is and the struggles she has overcome and just wants to see her succeed and be happy.

There's a spark between them that grows and finally becomes love. But don't get comfortable, things can change in the blink of an eye.

5 stars
This story is emotional and deals with drugs, sexual assault and violence but is done in a way that makes you feel, and angry for what they have gone through but oh so happy at the outcome.

I think this is my favorite Gold Hockey book yet. Lucas Clark has always had a problem with Maddy Roberts after the chaos she caused in her brother's life when she was an addict. He appears to have everything together in his life, so there is no way he could understand what has happened in the past to make here like she is. Maddy has always known that Lucas despises her, so she keeps out of his way as much as possible. But as Lucas waits for Mads to mess up, he notices that she is actually a really good person who is trying to make amends.

When Mads tries to protect one of the girls she works with, Lucas offers to help in any way he can, and so he and Mads form an alliance. With Lucas by her side, Maddy knows that she can overcome any obstacle that is put in her way, but tragedy is an ugly mistress who can strike at any time.

This story deals with sensitive, trigger issues such as sexual assault, drug use and domestic violence, but is handled in such a caring way that it stirs up many emotions. I love Ms. Faber's style of writing and she makes her characters so relatable that you really become invested in their lives. Love this book!

Wow this book just hit me it really hit me the emotions the good and the bad Mad's Ben's sister has done some awful stuff but she's had some really awful stuff happen to her and Elise Faber proves she's not afraid to handle any subject abuse, rape, and substance abuse its all there and Mad's has made a huge turn around but one member of the Gold just can't let the past stay in the past he has his own sad past he understands what it's like to be a part of such a toxic family Lucas just looks at Mad's and sees his own family until he stops looking at her past and sees her and the person she wants to really be better then her mistakes better then her toxic mom better then the visious ex who is causing pain to a girl Vivi at the children's shelter she works at. And when Mad's needs Lucas he's there for her in the best way possible its sweet and beautiful I just love them coming together and making a family. As for the end of this book I just can't believe it what is actually happening to the Beloved Gold Hockey Team I can't wait to read the next book. I was allowed to read and advance copy of this book and this is my honest review.

Elise Faber is on a winning streak with book eighteen in the Gold Hockey series, CHANGED. This is
Maddy Roberts’ and Lucas Clark’s story. Maddy has had a difficult life. She is the sister of Ben (COVERED, Gold Hockey #16). Ben and Maddy have been mending their relationship. Lucas is Ben’s friend and teammate. Lucas doesn’t trust Maddy because of his experience. He is worried for Ben. However, as he is watching Maddy and discovering more about her, and his feelings change for her.

Elise Faber does a great job with CHANGED. The characters face many situations that alter their opinion of each other. Lucas becomes very protective of Maddy. Maddy begins to heal and like herself. The story is well-written and believable. It is a good lesson in wrongfully judging people.

The epilogue had two cliff-hanger endings. I cannot wait to read both. One is a new story with Stefan and Brit (BLOCKED, Gold Hockey #1). The other is Devon’s story. I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book.

I seriously cannot believe that it has taken me this long to read a Gold Hockey story, if Changed is anything to go by this is has been a 5 star series from the beginning, one that I shall be diving straight into once I have finished this review.

Changed was set out with extremely precision, one of the most gut wrenching enemies to lovers stories I have read this year and I have read a lot! I adored Mad from the first page, and when you understand the trauma of her past you understand why she did the things she did, they were not pleasant, they are hard to read, but now she has her life back on track, her Hockey brother Ben and his new family are her rock, if only Ben's team mate could Lucas felt the same way, still believing that Mads will fall back into her old ways, but the more time he ends up spending with her the more the chemistry goes, when Mads past threatens a young teenager she is trying to save, Lucas steps in, Elise Faber delivered punch after emotional punch, heat in the right place and a couple that had the perfect HEA.

My heart is so full after reading Lucas and Mads’ love story. The move from hate (although I am not sure it was truly hate) to friendship and then to more was believable. Lucas needing to realize why he was so protective of his teammate and dealing with his issues was nice to see.

Maddie carried so much guilt on her shoulders and she was trying to make amends to those she hurt. She knew she deserved the way Lucas treated her, but every time he accused her of doing wrong it hurt and cut a little deeper. You can’t help but feel for Maddie and her struggles.

Lucas is a star hockey player who sees Maddie differently from everyone else. He is always waiting for the shoe to drop, but when he has the light bulb moment, he decides to change. You might night like how judgmental he is at first, but the more you get to know him, the harder you will fall for him.

I love this series, but I think this is my favorite so far. I honestly can’t say enough about the awesomeness of these characters. I received an ARC and this is my honest, voluntary review.

Maddy/Mads is a recovering addict and the sister of Ben, teammate and friend of Lucas. Lucas’ painful past colors his perspective when it comes to Mads. He doesn’t trust her and he isn’t going to stand by and let her hurt his friend and teammate again.

Mads is upfront and honest about her past mistakes and she’s working hard to be someone the teens at the Youth Center can trust and rely upon.

This books picks up after events that took place in Covered #16 in the Gold Hockey series. While this can be read as a standalone, I think readers would better understand the multiple characters and relationships by reading the books in order.

Besides the trust issue Lucas has concerning Maddy, both of their painful pasts will rear up and cause some upheaval. The Gold Hockey family is always growing and expanding, and drama just seems to find them constantly.

This storyline is fast-paced and may cause whiplash as emotions and feelings can change in the blink of an eye.

OK - Lucas was a jerk at first to Mads. Mainly because of her drug abuse past and her treatment of her brother (and teammate of Lucas). But when they find out there is love below the surface, the story really takes off

I loved the interactions between the two of them before they realize they were meant for each other. Poor Mads. When she tells the story of her past to Lucas I was balling my eyes out. The fact she could trust him after all she's been through was a miracle.

Then there is Vivi. I'm so glad Mads took her under her wing, or she may have ended up just like Mads did. And Lucas wanting to be a part of both of their lives made this a very Happy Ending.

Elise Faber through you for a loop in this story. Multiple times! And you will be shocked at the ending leading into the next set of stories. Boy did I love the way this story unfolded. It keeps you on the edge of your seat and leaves the door open for more to come.

I have been waiting for these two, and it did not disappoint!!
Mads and Lucas, they love to hate each other. I would say this can be a standalone. However, you do miss some back story and situations. The story told here touches your heart and makes you root for this couple. Mads has had a very rough life, but wow is she strong now and figuring it out. I love how slowly but surely Lucas opens his eyes. There is family drama and a bad guy that isn't expected, also some wonderful new additions to the family. The steam and chemistry is very hot between them, starts at a slow burn though. This was a very enjoyable read, and with all the books in this series, it sucks you in. I can't for the next one, all her series have been amazing!!

I received an ARC of this book, but all the opinions and thoughts are my own.

Changed is a wonderful addition to the Gold Hockey Series and this time we get to know Lucas and Maddy and all I need to say is this is one emotional read !!!!!
From the moment I picked this book up I was captivated and there was no putting down until the final word had been read and even then I wanted more. Lucas took some warming up too but once I saw his real side I fell hard and fast but it was Maddy who took over my heart because I felt all the pain and heartbreaking emotions she felt because of what she had gone through in her life. Changed touched me on so many levels, this was a heartbreaking yet heartwarming story, it’s entertaining and emotional but more importantly its love story. This is a book that will tear you apart and put you back together again. Another great read from the very talented Ms Faber.

Maddy endured so much in her past which led to some self-destructive choices. She has worked hard to turn her life around and try to ensure that others don’t have the same fate while trying to make amends to those she hurt. She believes she is making strides except when it comes to Lucas, her brother’s teammate and friend.

Lucas has a difficult past of his own which has him doubting the person she has become. It is only when he sees how she is with one of the girls at the center where she works that he finally sees her and not her past and realizes that denying his feelings is no longer an option.

Even though Lucas and Maddy didn’t get off to the best start they take us on an emotional journey as they learn to open their hearts and trust each other while they realize what family truly means.

This is the 19th book in this phenomenal series, and this is Maddy and Lucas’s story. Maddy has had a tough life, ang when she hits rock bottom, the only way is up, and she has turned her life around, and is determined to make amends for hurting those who love her. Lucas is a star hockey player, who is Maddy’s brothers’ best friend, and he does not believe that Maddy means what she says, and he is waiting for the other shoe to drop.
This is a beautifully written heartwrenching emotional roller coaster, which has family, friendships, trust, drama, romance, witty banter, humor, and love, which leads to an entertaining, tragic, haunting, unpredictable, twisted, and heartwarming steamy addictive page tuner.
I look forward to reading more from this talented author whose work I highly recommend.

In Changed, Gold Hockey #18, we get Mads and Lucas's story at long last!

Recovering addict Maddie works hard to make amends to her brother and the people she hurt while she was using - including working with at risk youth. And while Ben is supportive of his sister and her recovery, his teammate and best friend Lucas remains skeptical. Seeing the situation through a different lens, he is just waiting for the shoe to drop.

But after spending time with her, Lucas is forced to come to terms with the fact that Mads really is trying to be someone new, and he's left to face the reasons for his strong reactions to her.

As the two grow closer, Maddie is in a panic searching for one of the girls at the center - and Lucas comes up with a solution to help the girl that just might be crazy enough to work.

Oh MY! Wow! This has ALL the feels! Emotions ranging from hate to guilt to hurt to…well, you get the idea!

Two hurt souls…one lashing out and another trying to atone for past actions. But when is enough enough? When do you accept that, no matter your past, you need to let it go instead of remunerating on it again and again, letting it cast a long shadow over your future?

Lucas and Mads…so many past hurts. Some rearing their heads in a hurtful and dangerous manner. Can they get beyond their pasts? And at what price?

At their core though, two such wonderful and caring people - a touching love story of struggle and overcoming difficult odds.

But when Lucas realizes that Maddy might not be like those people, he tries to make amends for being such a jerk to her. When they both realize that they have feelings for one another, and he works to give her the life she deserves, will they both find their happy endings together?

Wow, this book packs a super powerful emotional punch. Lucas and Maddy's story made me fall hard into a vast ocean of emotions and swimming through deep currents of feelings. I loved these two so much and I thought they were both very special characters. The blend of drama, heart and steam is smart and captivating. Trust me when I warn you that this is one of those books that once you pick it up you are not going to be happy about having to put it down, and once you do finish these characters are going to linger in your heart & mind.

Changed is an amazing read. Maddy is wonderful. You feel for her for all the guilt she carries around. She has a huge heart and is a survivor. Lucas is a talented hockey player who is protective of his teammates. Once you get to know him you will just swoon over him and how giving he is. I love the chemistry between Mads and Lucas so much. It's a wonderful build from hate to friendship to more. They complete each other in such a wonderful way. I could not get enough of this one. I adore the Gold hockey series so much. I cannot wait for the next book. You need to meet Mads and Lucas today.

Wow! Elise nailed this one. Lucas hasn't really liked Mads for all the hurt she caused her brother. Her brother happens to be not only Lucas's friend but also his teammate. As Lucas gets to know and understand her more, his feelings grow. Mads thinks Lucas hates her and she really doesn't care for him, either. However, the more he is around and the more things he does to show her his sofer side, the more she sees the true man. As they get to know each and form a strong relationship, will her dark past come back and destroy it all?
