It’s unfortunate that I have to keep comparing this to Mieruko-chan because it comes up short every time. Even without that series looming over it, this is pretty mediocre at best.
First off, Mob is not a pleasant character to have around and he’s around a lot this time. We got his backstory about being judged for his appearance, but this volume loves to make jokes about him stalking and kidnapping Kaya. That’s… a big nope for me.
Some of the plotting proper here is good; I think the backstory of Kaya’s mom and her sorta messed up family are interesting enough that it could easily anchor the series if one was suitably invested in it.
A lot of the characterization, however, is really off. Kaya’s aunt gets introduced impersonating her sister and taking Kaya at the mall (apparently kidnapping is this series’ go-to). She’s confronted by Kaya’s father, but it’s clear she’s never reached out before this and the explanation why is nonexistent. Like, send a card, lady.
It’s very frustrating because I want to like this, yet I am almost to the point where I don’t have a ton of interest in continuing. Most of the spooky chapters not connected to the plot are fine, but you can always tell how they’re going to end. Lack of suspense was not a hallmark of horror, last I checked.
Sometimes that can still be fun; the chapter in the woods plays with something new and gets a little of the creep factor back. There seems to be a hint that Kaya could be housing a malevolent presence that looks for all the world like evil Anya Forger from Spy x Family and that either makes or breaks that visual depending on your viewpoint.
It’s mainly horror that is neither evocative nor horrific and feels very rote. The main storyline definitely feels more interesting, but I’m not in love with many of the characters involved with it. It’s really feeling like this isn’t really for me and that’s a bummer as I do enjoy creepy manga horror.
3 stars - it’s okay, but only in the broadest sense. It needs a lot more polish than it has and we’ll see whether I’m back for the next volume. Passable, but imperfect.
Another solid volume of a fun horror series, perfect way to kick off October. Volume 3 has a good mixture of episodic stories and serialized stories, so the overall plot arc is moving along at a good clip with new reveals, complications, and teases, but you get those really fun self contained Twilight Zone twist kind of chapters. It's getting more readable for me now that I'm acclimatizing to some of the ghost words, though some parts still require really careful attention to get the subtleties. Artwork is still stellar and I love these characters.
The third volume and this time some backstory on Kaya and her family... though still a lot of it is a mystery. I felt for grandma, but I definitely need to know more. Plus, Kaya, what is up with you? Stop being so scary. XD We get some urban legends and scary ghosts (Seriously they are terrifying) and Kaya kicks butt. This series is just SO GOOD! I am enjoying it so much.
I do not at all understand the storyline with Kaya's mother/grandmother/aunt. Outside of that, I enjoyed the usual smaller pieces like Kaya helping find a lost child (but not a lost elderly man).
