Two young painters in love sell everything they own, buy a vintage motorhome and hit the road to seek their fortune. This is the story of their adventures. In a voice as unaffected as the paintings she and her husband create, Dori DeCamillis tells the story of their three year long journey. Often funny, sometimes heartbreaking-with echoes of Huckleberry Finn, Jack Kerouac and Lucy and Desi in "The Long Long Trailer"-The Freeway takes a reader not simply across America, but to a place somewhere in the center of the heart.
I proofread this book for the authors, so if you find any typos, it is my fault :) Dori tells the story of her relationship with her husband and their rags to riches start in the art world in diary format. One detail I liked was when Dori said that their skin had turned orange from eating so many carrots when they were broke. Some entries were laugh-out-loud funny. Their RV is small and breaks down frequently, but somehow Joe keeps it going. The couple has since divorced, but it is still a moving tale of young love and struggling to make ends meet in pursuit of your dream. Oh yes, and their paintings are very cool--they collaborated on painting miniatures of houses in minute detail, then moved on to painting minature landscapes. Their art has moved in different directions since the divorce.
I really loved this book. It captured my imagination about being an artist who travels all across America in a unique motorhome / RV. Whether you are an artist, or a traveler, or a fan of cool RV's, you will enjoy this cool book. Someday I hope to have the courage to sell everything and go see America in a motorhome!
What can I say? I fell in Love with Dori's art then I fell in Love with her story. I have to laugh that I met her (now ex) husband last year at the same art festival in Cherry Creek where I first met Dori some years before. I recognized his style as very similar (loved it) but when I asked him if he was related to Dori he vehemently denied even knowing her. After my recollection of the book came back to me he re-canted and told me they had divorced :/ the 2nd reading of this book was made very... Nostalgic.
