About the author

The brothers Arkady Strugatsky [Russian: Аркадий Стругацкий] and Boris Strugatsky [Russian: Борис Стругацкий] were Soviet-Russian science fiction authors who collaborated through most of their careers.

Arkady Strugatsky was born 25 August 1925 in Batumi; the family later moved to Leningrad. In January 1942, Arkady and his father were evacuated from the Siege of Leningrad, but Arkady was the only survivor in his train car; his father died upon reaching Vologda. Arkady was drafted into the Soviet army in 1943. He trained first at the artillery school in Aktyubinsk and later at the Military Institute of Foreign Languages in Moscow, from which he graduated in 1949 as an interpreter of English and Japanese. He worked as a teacher and interpreter for the military until 1955. In 1955, he began working as an editor and writer.

In 1958, he began collaborating with his brother Boris, a collaboration that lasted until Arkady's death on 12 October 1991. Arkady Strugatsky became a member of the Union of Soviet Writers in 1964. In addition to his own writing, he translated Japanese language short stories and novels, as well as some English works with his brother.

I did read quite a few Strugatzki novels growing up (in Russian), but somehow I missed those two (and probably a few others). A few things strike me now. First, how good and smart their work was and how I didn't fully appreciated it until now. Second,I am amazed how did it ever pass the censure. Especially the first novel. Both novels are part of stories about the group of free search (my translation), organization that go to different planets in search of life. They found a few, very different ones. If the first novel i perceive as more of a satire on a Soviet-like society, the second provides original takes on the the potential contact with different civilizations. Makes me want to read again all their novels.

Обитаемый остров, кроме того, что отлично закрученный и приключенческий, хорош тем, как постепенно, слой за слоем, глуповатый и прямолинейный донельзя герой теряет наивность- это всегда хороший приём. А когда читаешь впервые- вообще же не знаешь- что правда, а что нет, и вынужден верить ему в его умозаключениях и действиях. А перечитывая, можешь обращать внимание на удивительно точные детали больного мира.

А Малыш- просто очень грустная, очень камерная и довольно безнадежная повесть. О высокомерном вмешательстве в чужой порядок вещей. Ещё она очень хороша атмосферой- пустое, холодное, враждебное место, чужое и чуждое. На мой взгляд, лучшее у С. описание инородности.
