This book takes the reader through the Great Barrier Reef. The reef feeds, shelters, and protect the marine life that forms there. This book describes the marine life that lives there and what they might do. It also talked about coral, as well as endangered reefs and why they are classified as such. The illustrations for this book are colorful and realistic.

I would use this book in a 3rd grade classroom. I would first build vocabulary words with the students because some of the words students might not know. I would then read the book aloud. Next, I would have students research a marine life animal they saw in the illustrations. I would then have students create a poster with facts about the marine life. Another idea would be to have students come up with ideas of how to save the endangered reefs and how humans can protect it. This is a great book to involve science into literacy.

Great visuals; complex poetry! Since we narrowed our ocean studies to coral reefs, I wanted to provide the children with striking visuals that would resonate with them, and I think this book achieved just that. They love picking out the creatures hiding in the coral. Just wish the story was simpler; more appropriate for 2nd grade.

A nicely illustrated book about The Great Barrier Reef, with an environmental message. Nothing new here I guess.
