This book is the first in a series featuring Detective Inspector Alex Peachey. When I read police procedural books like this, I like to get to know the characters, especially the main detective(s). I like to know about their relationships with their colleagues, how they work with others, as well as their family life, romantic relationships, etc., and I felt that DI Peachy was presented in an appealing way, in that regard.

The characters came to life in my mind, their interactions and conversations seemed real and relatable, and they were enjoyable to follow. Some of the characters, like Kitty, had fun and vibrant personalities.

I felt the story moved at a nice pace, enough to keep me invested and guessing, without everything happening at once. At some point while I was reading, I realised I'd become invested enough to care about the characters and what happened to them. I'd also happily read another book featuring this character as a protagonist.
