To be loved by a shadow in the Mist.

Every month, for three days, a mysterious fog filled with demonic creatures swallows the world. Since its first appearance a decade ago, I’ve diligently secured my home against the danger. Today, my sister’s negligence has allowed something in. A Mistwalker. A part of him now resides inside of me, his brand on my chest a constant reminder of his presence. He terrifies me and threatens to derail the life I’ve been building. And yet, a part of me is drawn to him…

I walked two worlds to be with her.

For years, I have lurked in the Mist, lying in wait for the opportunity to get to my fiery Jade. Now that humans have torn the Veil, nothing will keep me from crossing into the Mortal Plane to claim her. She’s my mate. I will not allow her to hide from the truth she knows deep within her but fears to acknowledge. I was made for her. I am her greatest wish.

The story started well on a positive note with an intriguing concept. Unfortunately, it didn't get very far this way. The narrative was plagued by numerous logic errors and lackluster descriptions, which made it difficult for me to stay engaged. I think an editor's touch could have improved it significantly.

The book started good but went downhill. There were too many logical fallacies and inconsistencies that constantly pulled me out of the story. For example, the mist had destroyed most animals on the planet. Meat was very expensive, and most people were vegetarians. In truth, most people would have been vegans. However, the herione is regularly and casually eating meat and animal products like bacon, ham, butter, eggs, chicken broth, BLT sandwiches, etc. Meat at every meal, it seems. Ham and bacon at breakfast, couldn't find the sausage. So much food detail, lol. The devastating economic impact of having the world's entire food chain almost completely destroyed wasn't mentioned at all. People were shopping at whole foods 8 years later. No big deal, lol.

So, there's been a rift between dimensions that allows the mist and monsters to enter. Other than staying inside a few days a months for a forced vacation, life goes on as usual, similar to modern life. Too unrealistic.

People take cabs to get around town, which was hilarious to me. No more uber and the like lol? That seemed anachronistic in a way. Speaking of which, the heroine was supposed to be 28, read like an older character to me.

But the main problem I had is that the hero is literally a figment if the heroine's imagination that somehow became flesh. She wished for him, and he became a self-aware entity. The book had felt like "wish fulfillment" to me at first, because the heroine liked romance books and fantasized about being mated with monsters or aliens. But for the guy to be a wish made flesh? That was too much for me. All other characters were 1 dimensional. I did finish the book but skimmed a lot after a while.

Oh, the new law enforcement for mist creatures were the Men in Black, lol. Maybe that was unintentional comedy?

This book is laughably bad. Instead of an actual review, I made the majority of my highlights and notes visible. The worldbuilding makes no sense and is inconsistent to the point of hilarity. There's a hint that this story could have really worked in the hands of a better writer. But when I snorted milk out my nose during the first real sex scene, I noped out. DNF at 40%.

♡ Fantasy romance
♡ Interesting world
♡ Epic romance
♡ Unique Romance
♡ Worshipping hero
♡ Pining hero

This was one of the most unique romances I've read in a while. For those of you who lean more toward contemporary romances because you get bogged down by the world-building in Sci-Fi or Fantasy I highly recommend this series. The world-building didn't take away from the story and I didn't feel like I had to orient myself in it before being able to enjoy the story. And then OMG THE ROMANCE! It was SO swoony. If you love a pining, worship-the-ground-you-walk-on hero - this is absolutely the book for you.

“Everything is posible if you wish it hard enough. ”

Regine Abel always spins a good story and this one hit the spot. With a touch of danger and a passion that spans lifetimes and worlds, it worked for me on a lot of levels.

Kazan and Jade. He's the monster in the mist. She's the woman he's drawn to. Except he's not really a monster. He's a whole lot more than that. And he comes to mean everything to Jade. Which sounds like a good thing, but they have a a few bumps and hurdles to get over before they can truly commit to one another.

You know, things like how his kind only manifest once a month in Jade's world. And the whole thing where people think they're monsters. And the fact they have to feed in a rather unorthodox manner.

Pfft. No big, right? Totally things a couple can work through without a problem. And they do. But not without some heartache and that aforementioned danger.

Flat out, I liked this one. Jade is strong and determined, but her past has left her wary. Kazan is...what can I say about him? He's also strong and determined. You know, determined to show Jade how much she means to him. No matter the danger to himself. Which kinda sucks for poor Jade because once she's in, she's ALL in and she doesn't want to lose the guy.

I'm digging these Dark Tales, man. Digging them.

Fantastic new standalone in the dark tales series by this author.

In a world where 3 days of the month, demonic creatures and beasts made of mist walk the Earth. During this time, the whole world comes to a standstill.. everyone shuts their doors and windows and hides away from the creatures that pour through the rift... a tear between this world and another dimension.

Jade finds herself at the mercy of a mist walker, when a window is left open....the Mistwalker will have his jade, his mate.... Jade should be scared or terrified even... but she finds herself recognising the ethereal being...

A wholly original and captivating story. I adore this author...she blows my mind with her creativity, originality and world building. This was a totally different kind of story in that there wasn’t a Sci fi related theme to be found... no aliens... but my gawd what a fantastic tale which turned into a truly wonderful and heartbreaking story that quite honestly blew...my...mind 🤯🤯🤯

I cannot and won’t give any spoilers because it’s just too great a read. And #NOSPOILERS!!

But the connection between the main characters crackled with electricity and a true connection that ...literally blew my mind and my heart away ( I didn’t know which way the story was going but there was no way in hell I was getting off the metaphorical bus)... filled with raw and honest emotions that made my book pimping heart oh so happy 🙌🏻🙌🏻🖤🖤

This is a very interesting take on what we dream into existence and what is in our nightmares.

Jade has dreamed of her perfect man all her life and the Mist brought her her Wish. It connects with her through a mistake her sister makes and he becomes a part of her physical body. How this whole thing unfolds is super clever.

Kazan is dreamy, we all want a Kazan. I loved the twist about his art and I could totally picture his creations based on the descriptions- fabulous. How Jade's Nightmare played into this was so interesting- yin and yang. Can't have the positive without the negative. And the one we feed (with our emotions) the most is the strongest.

I just wish I had known it was Kazan from the start and not just suspected it- it made me not fall for him immediately. I was like "NO" not a triangle, please not a triangle... Its not a triangle :)

It started good and I liked the concept and the unique H, but it went downhill fast. Too many logic errors and uninteresting descriptions brought me out of the reading flow. The hot scenes I had to skip, they didn’t feel romantic at all.

It was okay, I just got bored with the story and started skimming after awhile. I still don't really understand the world (could be due to aforementioned skimming), but I've heard people like the second book more so I'm going to give that one a shot!

I enjoyed Kazan and Jade’s love story. She tended to self sabotage and he was obsessive with her to a fault, but they worked well together. The thing that kept this from being a solid 4 stars for me was the ableism. I got the ick from the way the author talked about autism and intellectual disabilities.

Spice: 3/5

Triggers: dubcon, violence, gun violence, murder, body disintegration, grief, parent death (past), child bullying (past), attempted SA (vague, past), misogyny, FBI agent abusing power, ableism, fatphobia

I didn't like this one as much as I have Regine Abel's other novels. This hero felt a tad too desperate. The heroine a bit too insecure. They both needed a huge shot of confidence.

And Kyle? Really?

Interesting concept but confusing and a bit convoluted. (The addition of “Wishes” vs “Nightmares”? I don’t know..)

I felt pretty “meh” about the hero and the excessive use of exclamation marks.

I liked the idea but the execution left much to be desired. I’m still pretty confused about this world, I feel like more and more lore was being randomly added without being explained properly. This just didn’t spark joy. I found the baddies to be dumb - Morgan came out of nowhere and everything with Walker just left a bad taste in my mouth.

This wasn’t bad but I didn’t find it particularly good either. Shame.

3.5 stars. Great concept, decent execution, author needs to tighten up her writing a bit. Some of it reads like a self insert, and there were a few metaphors that pulled me out of the story.

Otherwise, an enjoyable read. I enjoyed the ending.

While I wasn't a huge fan of Ms. Abel's last two offerings ("Legion" and “Iced”), I've thoroughly enjoyed her other work—especially her Dark Tales. So, when given the chance to read an ARC of "The Mistwalker" I jumped on it. I'm glad I did, because it was everything I’ve come to know and expect from this author!

I'm a little ashamed to admit that I almost DNF'd this one when Kazan was introduced. I'm not a huge fan of the competing-love-interest thing (more so lately, for some reason), which I thought this was going to be.... It's not, and once I figured out who/what Kazan was, I was all about it. He’s a fabulous character with depth and dimension and appeal for days. We’re given a detailed enough description of him that he’s easy to picture, but not so many minute details that the reader’s imagination is thwarted. And sure, he’s a little…obsessive, but not in a turn-off, creeper kind of way. Jade was completely in keeping with Ms. Abel’s history of badass female leads—spunky, fierce, with just enough vulnerable humanity and flaws to make her feel real. Her love for her sister Laura and how that relationship started the story added a level of color to Jade that would have been lacking if all we’d seen were her interactions with Kazan. As a couple, it was fascinating to watch Jade and Kazan evolve, and it was nice to see them grow closer around painting and art rather than just a fated-to-be-together-so-they-have-to-fall-in-love trope. The initiation of their romance was swift, but the build to its realization was slow and tempting and utterly enthralling. Ms. Abel knows how to write her romance, and it’s one of the reasons I adore her work. “The Mistwalker” was no exception. Seriously, have a fan and a glass of ice water handy, because you’re gonna need it once Kazan gets started.

And before you start to think that this story was all steamy romance and electric chemistry between the otherworldly and the human, let me assure you that Ms. Abel DOES NOT skimp on the world-building or conflict. The concept of the Mist and what lurks within was both creepy and fascinating. There’s a level of terrifying-yet-intriguing mystery to it that made me totally relate to the curious humans who walked into it. And, as one would expect with something as unexplainable as the Mist, the Men in Black (aka the government suit types) are right in the middle.

“The Mistwalker” was cleanly edited (I think I only spotted one or two typos and they weren’t egregious ones), which is something I always appreciate as a reader. Ms. Abel’s writing style flows beautifully, and she strikes a great balance between scene-setting and moving the plot along at a pace that keeps her reader engaged. As with her other work, this story switches perspective between characters, and there’s very little—if any—perspective muddling/head-jumping.

Bottom line: This story was unique and beautiful, with excellent characters and a well-paced plot. I highly recommend “The Mistwalker” to fans of urban romantic fantasy, and to anyone who has enjoyed Ms. Abel’s other stories.

Really enjoyed the concept but there was too many scary/sad/annoying elements of the story for me to love it.

Frankly i wished it had ended differently.
Like her sister having a mistwalker soulmate and them both going to the mist full time.

Idk just too much violence in this and not enough cute couple stuff for me to feel happy with it.

The fast forward to kids epilogues are always my favourite. But idk i feel like with such turbulent stories you need the last third or quarter to be them actually living their happy ever after and having them do the whole pregnancy cuteness and newlywed type stuff and yeah.
Balance. This book was unbalanced too much cons to pros and darkness to light and the whole mist world concept was vague enough to give me a geadache trying to wrap my head around it and the rules and why she couldnt just go there and had to permnantly choose a world or whatever. I know the whole oxygen daylight thing but yeah.
And no matter how rich the fact that she would deprive him of a place he needed and would be a dreamland reality to her where dhe woulsnt have to deal with earth dangers and they could both be fully free and idk not pay taxes or sicknesses or other nonsense is just wildly weird to me and frankly seems more unbelievable that the fantasical elements of the story and didnt gel with her character idk i love the authors work dont get me wrong especially for other worldly male and human female pairings but this idk maybe its an earlier work or maybe its the earth setting and not an alien realm setting but it felt lacking and anxiety inducing more than a soulmate romance.

How great would it be if wishes could come true!

But then, I wonder if wishes did come true, would nightmares be far behind?

Perhaps that is why they say ‘Be careful what you wish for’.

‘The Mistwalker’ is the story of Jade, a 28 year old, independent and beautiful woman. Orphaned at a young age, she has taken care of her younger sister and made her own place in the world. But Jade’s carefully settled life takes a dramatic turn when something happens that defies all logic. The fabric between two universes is torn making a portal through which strange beings start pouring into Jade’s world, bringing a dense mist with them. They are named Mistwalkers, shadowy faceless entities with human-like arms. A pretty creepy description, if I may say so. I don’t think I would be particularly pleased to come across that in a dark alleyway.

One such Mistwalker latches on to Jade and keeps insisting that he has come from his world only to find her.

How does he know Jade?

Is it even possible for a being of another world to travel across universes to be with her?

What does the Mistwalker want from Jade?
Love transcends all boundaries, but a relationship between beings of two different dimensions, different planes of existence?!

That might be pushing it.

Or maybe not?

Even though 'The Mistwalker' is Book 2 of the Dark Tales series, it is a stand-alone book and that is my favourite kind.

The plot is insanely captivating and the intensity of emotions of the main characters is crackling with life. You cannot help but be drawn in. I generally do not read a lot of books with sexual content simply because more often than not, it just throws off the direction of the story. I was, however, really glad that that is not the case here. Physical intimacy has been deftly woven in with the flow of the plot by the author which makes for a great reading experience. Do not miss out and get the book as soon as you can!
