When the children dug a hole in the gravel-pit, they were very surprised at what they found. 'It' was a Psammead, a sand-fairy, thousands of years old.
It was a strange little thing - fat and furry, and with eyes on long stalks. It was often very cross and unfriendly, but it could give wishes - one wish a day. 'How wonderful!' the children said.
But wishes are difficult things. They can get you into trouble...

I am interested in the Psammead. It is very strange, but it is an important character on this story. I am also interested in the children's growth.
new words: gravel-pit , stalk, Psammead, brooches, inspector, cart
good expressions: the white house was on the hill with a wood behind it and a gravel-pit on one side. I wish you'd come out, the something brown and furry and fat fell out into the hole. it really was very strange, it could move its eyes in and out on stalks.
Retelling of Edith Nesbitt story for English language learners. I think my son got it at school?? If you're a native speaker like me, better off finding the original story I'm sure, but it was still quite a charming twist on the genie granting wishes genre!
What would you wish for if you knew it would only last for one day? Would you wish for something silly or serious?
Fantasy & horror Money 💰 not everything And not every wish brings benefits for you 🙂 About a children who thought if thire wishes get true they will happy ,on the contrary wishes get troubles for them. Let's let God decides what good for us if it was up to us also ,we'll get ourselves in troubles God's know better 🙏 😌
4. Have you ever seen a sand-fairy? Of cource, No, I haven't.
5. This book is very interesting for me because it's easy to read and the characters are not so many. In this book, five chiildren and a sand-fairy are main characters. The fairy can get someone's wish so they made many wishes and the wishes came true because. The fairy's house is in the sand gravel where they can go in 5 minutes. They could fly and be beautiful, rich. Moreover, they could be big to get the best of the fight thanks to fairy' power. As I said, this book is very interesting and humorous but this is not realistic. In real world, these incidents will never happen. Issunbousi- Japanese falk story is similar to this book. Whenever you want or want to do something, you can get those things. I hope this stories appear in real world.

5. In this story, as the title said, one day five children found the "it". Actually, the time when they found "it" was just moved to new house. At first, they were so surprised to "it" because the shape and color was like an alien. Also "it" was so upseted because of the sun. Actually "it" was sleeping under the earth long long long time. That's why they couldn't speak with each other. However, the trouble was soon solved, and they noticed that "it" can let their dream come true. That's why they made each wish, but they had troubles every time they make their wish.

At first, they feel comfortable with their wish, but due to the wish, they got some accidents. I felt this story is like Japanese comic Doraemon. Doraemon give Nobita some useful tool, but he takes mistake by using it. They both have similar points. This story said to us that if we try to get something without effort, itll be bad. Its interesting, but it has important message.
"And, of course, they did, but not in this story. It was in a very, very different place. It was in a ... But I must say no more." This passage is the ending of the story. Five children promise the sand fairy Psammead not to ask for any wishes after making their last wish come true, and also not to tell anyone about it because it gets tired of doing it and doesn't want to do it any more. They meet it some day again, but the story doesn't tell us about it. This is interesting!
This is a fantasy story, so it reminded me of my childhood. I used to have many wishes when I was little. As I read it, I felt so excite what was going to happen next. I like it!

(In fact it doesn't even deserve one star) Then I realized it isn't the original but an "adaptation" (SHAME on the Mesa library for misleading readers in your catalog system!). Why do people RUIN classics by trying to dumb them down? Do NOT waste your time on this poorly written, BORING book!
