Life as an angel can be hell!

The angel Alexiel loved God, but she rebelled against Heaven when she saw how disgracefully the other angels were behaving. She was finally captured, and as punishment sent to Earth to live an endless series of tragic lives. She now inhabits the body of Setsuna Mudo, a troubled teen in love with his sister Sara. Setsuna's misery mirrors the chaos among the angels, and their combined passions threaten to destroy both Heaven and Earth.

Deep in Hell, Setsuna has finally found Kurai. But Hell and everyone in it will be destroyed if Kurai doesn't agree to go through with the marriage to Lucifer--who sacrifices his wives to stabilize his power!

And in Heaven, the angel Raphael is trying to revive Setsuna's human body, with poor results. A mysterious power is preventing the resurrection spell from working, but Sara is not willing to give up. But when she uses the angel Jibril's powers to assist Raphael's efforts, they are both flung into another dimension!

Review for complete series

No matter how hard he tries, Setsuna always manages to run into trouble, and his love for his sister is just one of many things that seem to be going wrong. It is only when two demons appear and make his life an even bigger mess that Setsuna comes to realise all his misfortunes might be linked to the fallen angel Alexiel.

I would definitely consider Angel Sanctuary a great and classic manga. But for all that, I am sure it does not appeal to everyone. In addition to the incestuous relationship between Setsuna and his sister Sara, there are drugs and alcohol, gruesome murders and mutilations, rape, child murder, a twisted view on religion and god, suicide, characters whose minds turn grotesque and obsessive - the list goes on. These are subjects that might be very appealing to some, but also very problematic for others.

I belong to the latter - usually, these subjects would automatically cause me to stay clear from such a book. It is truly a macabre tale, and that's just the way Kaori Yuki's works go. Yet despite my reluctance to give such subjects a try, I can say that whether one likes it or not, there's no denying that this is a brilliantly crafted story with an impressive amount of meaningful characters.

Kaori Yuki's art and stories all suffer and gain from the same thing: the sheer mass of detail. Her art is absolutely gorgeous with all the fine hair and cloth and just all the immense details. But at times, it can make the pages overcrowded and confusing - it certainly takes a longer time to read than your average manga. The story is at times likewise confusing as anything - it can be hard to keep track of which panels come first. But it's the wonderfully interwoven plot that remains a solid point throughout. The smallest details from the first volume can become relevant in the later ones and there is one plot twist after the another. There's never a boring moment as we follow Setsuna unravelling all the intrigues that surround the large cast.

Although I would consider the plot a strong point of this work, it is yet the characters who seem to turn it into something special. I have rarely come across a manga with so many characters who all have diverse and deep personalities. You get to love and hate all of them as even the most villainous ones prove to have something very humane and rather pitiful about them. In the end, one wonders - who was the true villain, if there was one at all? But with all the variety, there's no denying that the majority of them are broken characters. Every one of them seems to be involved in one twisted mess or another.

Luckily, there are great bonds of love, friendship and family that stand strong throughout the story and every now and then offer a well deserved comic relief. Angel Sanctuary is most certainly worth a try for any who enjoy strong character-driven stories that'll leave you with a hard time picking out a favourite character.

So, Setsuna has his body back now. We learn more about many people in this volume, though there are still many mysteries. I am rather interested in this now, as the plot is moving beyond what it started as, and deepens with each volume.

The Book of Gehenna saga has ended with Arachne's tragic death (again) and the resurrection of Setsuna's mortal body, leaving Alexiel's body as a corpse, once again. Now, a new page has turned to open the Book of Heaven-Yetzirah where many more dangers will be faced by Setsuna and company in pursuit to rescue Sara from her impending doom in Heaven and also to settle hearts and other affairs between the elite angels and the rebels.

Bleh. This one was kinda dry. Perhaps I just wasn't in the mood. (... I just typed moodle before erasing it to correct myself... Ha... ahaha, I made a new word! I want noodles! There's a poodle! Oh dear GOD, I need sleep.) Or perhaps this series has simply exceeded beyond my span of interest in one single series. As much as there is to this series, and twenty volumes in all, it might take me another entire damn year to finish it. Maybe more! Each volume-- each chapter-- has so much to take in and human beings only have a certain capacity for so much emotion and information at a time! Gee, I read too much... And at the worst possible times in life too...

The wedding has been halted for the moent, but if it's stopped, all of Hell could be the collateral damage. Meanwhile in Heaven, we start to get a better look at Raziel, and the damage that his innocence and desire to help people can actually cause in as horrible a place as Heaven has become.

We also get a look at Zaphikiel's backstory - how he came to be who he is, what happened to his eyes and who exactly he works for.

And meanwhile, on Earth, Kato is back, and he and Uriel work together to get Raphael to resurrect Setsuna's real body. But the space they create is outside reality in a way, and it might prevent what he's trying to do. Not to mention, someone is watching them from afar, but whose reach is very long.

This is basically the halfway point in terms of length, but the story has entered its final chapter. They're going to Heaven, a place that's become nearly as corrupted and horrible as Hell. And Setsuna won't come back without saving Sara. Love it. :)
