This is a fun reincarnation/isekai that provides a lot of mainstay tropes while adding an interesting twist.

Plot - 10/10, Character - 8/10, Setting/Game Mechanics - 9/10, Writing - 8.5/10, Enjoyment - 10/10

Samson is a teenager who gets hit by Truck-kun and dies, but isn't too broken up about the situation because his favorite webnovel went on hiatus anyway. Moments later, Botan Aki, a grim reaper, arrives and provides a glimpse of the hellish afterlife waiting for him. But she's also a fan of his favorite webnovel, so she negotiates a special version of Purgatory just for him. He will become a character within the webnovel and must prevent the story from going on hiatus without drawing too much attention from the author. It's a fantastic setup that seamlessly mashes together the tropes of isekai, reincarnation, magic school, and several others. Each chapter ends with Author Notes where the webnovel author reflects on the events so far and often makes comments about things he didn't see coming. It's a fantastic story-within-a-story setup.

I enjoy the characters. While many of them are simply archetypes, the author plays with this idea by describing the author of the original webnovel as not being able to write characterization well. It's a fantastic way to lampshade the tropes we often see with supporting characters while also allowing many of them to develop more personality as Samson pulls them into additional subplots. Much of the story involves Samson trying to influence events around the webnovel's main character, Hero Goodlooking, who is an overpowered dope that causes clumsy mayhem at times when the webnovel author tries to insert comic relief.

The setting and mechanics of the story are simultaneously simple and complex. The world of the webnovel is very simple: 12 allied nations send their best and brightest children to a magical academy where they learn to be heroes and rulers. They also compete in yearly competitions that serve as war substitutes between the nations where the opponents can wager resources or even cities on the fight's outcome. There is magic and swordplay that follows a pretty basic scheme of letter grades. Beyond that layer, then we have Samson, who is reincarnated as a character within the webnovel world who didn't exist in the original storyline. He has foreknowledge of upcoming plot events and receives quests to manipulate events. The goal is to make the webnovel more popular and avoid the hiatus that otherwise happens after the 4th volume.

The writing is clear and fun, with a lot of tongue-in-cheek poking at the writing process since the events technically take place inside of a fictional world within the fictional world. There were some unfortunate instances of Samson mistakenly referred to as Stephen, but otherwise, there were minimal mistakes.

This book sat in my To-Read pile for a long time and I'm glad I finally picked it up. It provides all the things I love about light novels while avoiding the common pitfalls. The characters are fun and the plot is fantastic. I can't wait to see where this series leads.

It was a fun read. The book equivelant of those fun/dumb isekai anime. Nothing too deep, but great for a hot summer Sunday and nothing else to do.

06/27/2024 Notes:

Mediocre narration & predictable plot, but amused by the concepts and characters. Gonna dive into the next one and see if the characters and setting will grow more complex or stall out in meandering fashion.

How I, A Normal High School Student, Went to Royal Academy and Avoided Being Trapped in Hiatus

This book is a playful and self-aware entry in the LitRPG/isekai genre, and it’s easy to appreciate its charm even if it doesn’t break any molds.

The premise is delightfully meta: a high school student dies, is reborn inside a beloved—but stalled—light novel, and must navigate the perils of Royal Academy while saving the story from an endless hiatus. This setup enables fun commentary on genre tropes and keeps the tone light and upbeat.

Strengths: The meta humour works well—the story pokes fun at its own clichés while enjoying them. LitRPG mechanics (traits, quests, skill upgrades) are straightforward and enhance the protagonist’s progression without feeling overwhelming. Fast pace and bite‑sized chapters make it easy to breeze through—ideal for readers wanting a light, humorous read. Weaknesses: Characters can feel two‑dimensional at first—some are clearly meant to be archetypes. The early chapters rely heavily on system notifications and quest updates, which may feel repetitive. There’s little romantic or emotional depth—conflicts rarely escalate beyond lighthearted bickering or antics.

Comparison to contemporaries:

My Next Life as a Villainess: Both feature school-life isekai with meta‑irony and self-aware characters. But while Villainess builds more emotional resonance, this book remains breezier and more farcical. The Novel’s Extra: The protagonist here mirrors the “outsider in a story” trope, but this version plays it more for comedy and parody than for drama. Traditional LitRPGs: While many titles in the genre go deep on stats and grinding, this book keeps mechanics lightweight—more thematic than technical.

Overall evaluation: A fun, summer‑day read—amusing, meta, and self‑referential, yet never too deep. It won’t stick with you like heavier emotional stories, but it’s a solid palate‑cleanser.

It confidently navigates genre tropes with humor, giving longtime fans a knowing wink while never overcomplicating the narrative.

 Final Rating: ⭐⭐☆ ☆ ☆

Pros:

Entertaining, witty tone filled with genre-awareness. Fast‑moving plot and lightweight mechanics. Good for fans of meta‑LitRPG or comedic isekai.

Cons:

Flat character names and archetypes may feel shallow. Lacks emotional stakes and romantic development. Humor may grow repetitive for some readers.

This Academy Extra #1 sits comfortably in its niche: an amusing, self-aware LitRPG romp. It outshines many contemporaries on laughs and pacing, though it doesn’t reach the emotional heights or mechanical depth that elevate its peers. For readers seeking a lighthearted academy adventure with a side of parody, this is a strong pick.

This is the first book I've read by this author.

This series has a unique premise. A character in a story that also lives in real life (maybe) is brought back when the Grim Reaper's favorite series comes to an end. The quest? To keep the story going so the Grim Reaper always has something to read.

Samson, the main character in this story is part of the incoming class at a magical academy. There are numerous secondary characters as Samson follows the quest at the beginning of each chapter to make Hero Goodlooking (the MC in the book) look good while also trying to keep everything from spinning out of control.

It must be said that this is a very light slice of life story. The daily quests don't change that. There is a lot of political intrigue involved between the different royal houses as Samson does his best to boost his house while not affecting the Goodlooking house.

All in all, I had a good time reading this. If you don't like slice of life stories, I would recommend skipping it. The editing is okay, and the story keeps moving along. The story is light on action except for the swordfights so hopefully that changes in the future.

Excellent read, but lacking in illustrations...

You know, back in the day, I thought one of the differences between a novel and a light novel was that light novels have illustrations. Apparently, that's not the case here. Don't get me wrong, though. The book is outstanding, with attention to detail so great that you don't actually need images for your imagination to run wild. But still, having at least one depiction of the characters would really help with how I picture the story.
Overall, it's an amazing book that you won't regret picking up. I can at least guarantee that much.

Amusing Story Pokes Fun At Own Genre

At this point the web serial LitRPG genre is overloaded with content. Royal Academy plays in that genre too, but also has a lot of fun with the tropes and styles of the genre's authors too.

If you've spent foo much time reading chapter notes on Royal Road or other sites, you'll enjoy the jokes in this one.

A Great Read

This book stared off funny and it turned out to be such a page turner, I couldn’t put it down. I ‘m so excited to read the next book! Also, this book has my interests in mind, a person who loves anime, loves reincarnation into another world and a school setting with magic. Oh gosh, even better! This series is under kindle unlimited, thank you so much!

Fun Read

Sampson is tasked upon his death to enter a web novel and move it along from its seemingly permanent hiatus. He enters the Royal Academy makes friends and enemies, receives quests to keep the hero on track, and gains power. I like the quirkiness of the story telling, action, humor, and intrigue. I look forward to the next book.

Simon is run over by a distracted delivery truck driver, while being distracted himself by the ending of his favorite series "The Royal Academia".

As he sees his body flattened on the street, Aki, a young girl, about the same age as he, in appearance, and also the Grim Reaper arrives at the scene of the accident and introduces Simon to his options. A) If the Big Guy, as she calls Him, decides that Simon is acceptable for the world of light, commonly known as heaven, then that is his next stop. B) she causes the ground to open and shows Simon the fires of hell where a side office with fiery desks occupied by followers of The Royal Academia series are doing whatever they do.

Aki announces that the series is finished and, what she calls Hiatus, is created, causing all the awaiting or in transit souls to move on as their punishment has been met.

Simon is not at all in favor of waiting in this fiery hellish environment and asks Aki if there is an alternative. Aki is very happy to inform Simon that, under strict rules and regulations, he could, if he chooses, to be transported back to episode 1 of season 1, of the series, find out the reason that caused the author to stop writing it and, ultimately correct the situation so that the awaiting souls will have a place to wait untill the next Hiatus.

The story is pure imagination without any effort to create characters with names that the reader ca n associate with. Princess Perfect, Good Looking Guy, in my opinion, pushes the reader to skip pages as the message sent appears to be, don't take the characters seriously. However, the author's imagination is worth mentioning and because of the fact that I had to skip pages and could not relate to characters with "no impact" names, I rate the book 3 Stars maximum.

Help me read more books

I'm really not sure what the title of this book has to do with the story, (other than the academy part), since the main character did go to the academy, but the rest of it makes no sense. Perhaps it will with the next book in the series. The main idea is that the main character got to go back in time (well, not really), and fix the story told by his favorite author, so it doesn't get canceled. To be honest, the story isn't that great, but I kind of like the idea behind it. I'm pretty sure this is the first time I've seen this kind of thing in a LitRPG story. It's not great, but it's unique storyline makes for interesting reading. With that said though, I don't think I'll continue with this series, there's just not enough there to hook me and reel me in.

How I, A Normal High School Student, Went to Royal Academy and Avoided Being Trapped in Hiatus: Vol 1, A LitRPG Adventure (This Academy Extra), my fifth read author Kal Griffith, an author I'd not heard of before receiving the opportunity to reve this book. A unique, captivating, page-turning, well-written read leaving you panting for more. “I received a free Kindle copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review." The gifting of this book did not affect my opinion of it. I look forward to reading more from this author, in fact I’ve already weny out and got How I, A Normal High School Student, Went to Royal Academy and Avoided Being Trapped in Hiatus: Vol 2, A LitRPG Adventure & How I, A Normal High School Student, Went to Royal Academy and Avoided Being Trapped in Hiatus: Vol 1, A LitRPG Adventure (This Academy Extra). Interesting Twist on Isekai

Definitely an interesting take on the Isekai genre. Rather than reincarnating into a world based on a book or video game, the protagonist was transferred into the actual book as it is being written...and he can't let the author know he's there!

Started reading it for the concept, without much hope for the book. However I was quickly hooked and am looking forward to the next book. There are a few flaws, such as the protagonist being overly confident and quick thinking (in hindsight), but it was a fun read and happy I picked it up.

Rounding up from 3.5 stars. This novel was quite meta, and somewhat interesting because it's the first Isekai I've encountered where the protagonist entered a web novel. A fair bit of the setting felt really derivative, but that may have been part of the joke. And the protagonist made fun of the web novelist for forgetting certain details, but then I caught a few minor continuity errors in this story, which irked a little. Overall, interesting and fairly enjoyable, but I'm not fully committed to continuing the series.

Cheeky

Sampson is clearly not op, but he has it. Hero is as idiotic as they come and to trusting. princess perfect well her name is just not. Though the author I guess is demonstrating how bad the in story author is with his characters. Just good all around.👍

Fun book

This is a very self-aware piece of fiction making fun of many light novel tropes while also managing to weave a lighthearted and entertaining story of its own. I'll definitely be reading the next one.

What an interesting story line. This is a first for me and it was fantastic. Loved how our MC was constantly correcting the original ML. Also, I cannot wait to see what happens next. Gets better and better. So many questions, hidden enemies, plots, and adventures to be had.

The overall idea behind the story was interesting, but the author notes at the end of each chapter made it clear that the original (in text, not Mr Griffith) author was an idiot with no creativity. It defied belief that this author could have written an internet sensation web novel.

Different and fun

This was a different Isekai from what I'm used to.

But also fun. Except for the one scarred sister is not dark. And every now and then, you need something like this to smile at.

I really didn't think I would like this book. I grabbed it because it is something my daughter might like. I tried reading some passages to her and I found myself drawn in. After about 25 pages, I found I couldn't put it down. It was a really fun book.

I’m invested

The book’s breaks allowed me not to absorb it. I did not feel the pressure to read the book at one sitting even though the viewpoint breaks allowed me to mentally pause, they did not distract from the story

A bit weird, but still really good.

The style of the narrative is a bit odd but it works as a writing device. The overall story is funny while playing to well worn tropes.
