About the author

Reginald Arkell was a British script writer and comic novelist who wrote many musical plays for the London theatre. The most popular of those was an adaptation of the spoof history book 1066 and All That: 1066—and all that: A Musical Comedy based on that Memorable History by Sellar and Yeatman.

He was the author of A Cottage in the Country and the Green Fingers series of garden verse.

Arkell was born on 14 October 1882 at Lechlade, Gloucestershire, England, was educated at Burford Grammar School and trained as a journalist. He married actress Elizabeth Evans in 1912.

During the First World War he served with the King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry and The Norfolk Regiment. Arkell died on 1 May 1959 at Cricklade, England.

Die Geschichte hat sehr gemischte Gefühle in mir heraufgeholt. Der Schreibstil ist definitiv ein anderer, als der an den ich gewohnt bin, was bei einem Buch aus 1953 aber zu erwarten war. Innerhalb der ersten Hälfte hat mich die Darstellung von Frauen sehr wütend gemacht, auch wenn das vermutlich keineswegs Absicht des Autors war, da damals schlicht andere Rollenbilder vorherrschten, jedoch war die wiederkehrende Vorstellung von Frauen (schwach, zurückhaltend, zierlich etc.) nervig und wenn eine Frau dies nicht war, musste das natürlich direkt erwähnt werden („dickes Mädchen“). Die Szenen von Charleys Zeit in der Armee fand ich persönlich etwas lang gezogen, aber vielleicht einfach, weil mich der Abschnitt in seinem Leben einfach nicht so sehr interessiert hat.
Ab etwas mehr als der Hälfte hat mich das Buch dann aber doch etwas gepackt, da mich seine Zeit am Theater mehr interessiert hat. Gegen Ende stellte sich eine angenehme Ruhe ein und die Message, dass Erfolg, Ruhm und Geld nicht alles ist, kam auf jeden Fall an. Was man dem Buch aber allgemein lassen muss, der Handlungsort und Lebensstil wirken sehr entschleunigend und man schwelgt in einem Gefühl von Nostalgie des alten Englands.

Zunächst hat es Spaß gemacht die Geschichte zu lesen allerdings ist die Aufopferung des weiblichen Hauptcharakters kaum zu ertragen...
