Within the tiny life that is a newborn baby there exists the coded material that will evolve into a masterpiece of incredible proportions. Joseph Girzone's Joey tells the true story of a young boy--Girzone's own godson-whose life bloomed in just that way, unfolding in a magnificent adventure before it ended all too soon.
Joey was a boy born with a smile on his face and music in his heart, a boy who was to reflect all the experiences of the wonder of existence, the adventure of finding new things, the joy of discovering new love, the pain of betrayed trusts and broken commitments, the endless searching for a meaning to life and its endless riddles, and the joy of finding a wonderful God who can bring all these complex facets of life into focus.
This story is about a rare and beautiful love between a young boy and God. It is a work that will give hope to the young and comfort to mothers and fathers who watch fearfully as their children enter the unknown world of life's adventure.

One of the most touching books I have read. This is more memoir than extended eulogy about the life of a young man who touched the author's life in a meaningful way. Quick read.
Saccharine and oppressively religious. Forced to read this one as a freshman in high school, which is not surprising, since it was a Catholic school. Would have preferred they made us read something like Augustine's "Confessions," though.
What a story of a life lived with real struggles and real faith. It takes the reader from the highest points of childhood to the depths of sorrow that often come with age. Told from the perspective of one so close to the main character it gave to the book a realness that is lost when there are multiple perspectives.
A tough true story of a boy who grew to be a man known dearly by the author and by God. It is not an easy story and brings questions to mind, but no question is too great for faith.
Fr. Girzone takes you deeply into the life and spirituality of a young man he knows since his birth. Joey goes through trials and tribulations just as our children do, but Joey always comes back to his faith and friendship with Jesus to pull him through. Girzone especially got the trouble with drug addiction right as I remember my daughter going through the same time in her teen years.
