KGB operative Paco Araya is a mole who runs a travel agency in Manhattan, where he’s been living for many years. Suddenly, on a secret mission in Paris, he discovers by accident that the man he’s wanted to kill for many years happens to be within reach. Why does Paco want to kill this man, a known international terrorist very much reminiscent of the infamous Carlos the Jackal? Espionage and personal vengeance provide a deadly mix in this masterful Russian version of John Le Carre.
What can I tell - this is probably the best Russian spy novella (and probably in my top 10 for spy books in general) that I read for the last 20 years. However the reason that I liked it is not the plot (which is not bad at all) but the description of land and people. Please, do not understand me wrong, this is not a guide book, this is more of the look of the outside observer who is looking to the logic in certain habits and common believes. In this book which is the beginning of series it is US, next books are about India, Afghanistan, Estonia, and UK. I did not read English translation but hope that the language is as good as it is in Russian.
