This short story is the prologue to my latest novel, which is scheduled to be published in the summer of 2012...
A father and son out fishing.
Quality time from the first cast, the morning is perfect...for awhile. Chaos ripples across the pond and the two find themselves fleeing for their lives.
Nothing makes sense.
What is after them? What do they want? Most disturbing of all: why do they want them?
Bonus content: chapter one of my coming of age horror novel "Fall Leaves and the Black Dragon
I spent 20 years serving in the United States Air Force, and have had the fortune to live all over the world, including Iceland, Germany, and in a tent for a year in Saudi Arabia.
Always an artist at heart, I produced many paintings during my adventures. After my service, I settled down with my family (wife, two great daughters, 2 cats and a little white fluff dog) in small town Iowa, where I love to volunteer at the antique carousel. Now, I help people with intellectual disabilities to reach their potential and teach psychology classes at a local college.
I switched from a paint brush to a pen and am now a horror writer, by night.
I have had short stories published by Visionary Press, The Horror Zine, Crypto and Co., and several horror anthologies.
Escape from your reality for a bit and get scared.
Once I got used to the prose in which this short story was written (very much like a screenplay), the plot thickened quickly. What started out as a leisurely day of fishing ended in an unexpected and bizarre fashion. The ending left me hanging and questioning, "Is that it?" I admit, I slid my fingers across my tablet screen a few times believing or hoping there was surely more to the story. Erik Gustafson gave himself a great segue for a follow-on story, I hope, because this felt more like reading a prologue.
If you don't want your view of lazy fishing day be tainted, don't read this book. Once you lay your eyes on page one, you wouldn't be able to stop until the last word. So, grit your teeth and be ready to be scared... Please tell me Erik, that surely there is a continuation for this gem??
Perfect read for those who do NOT need happy endings… The Fishers might be a short story but it packs a pretty good punch. Let’s just say I won’t be going fishing any time soon…
