Stephen Edwin King was born the second son of Donald and Nellie Ruth Pillsbury King. After his father left them when Stephen was two, he and his older brother, David, were raised by his mother. Parts of his childhood were spent in Fort Wayne, Indiana, where his father's family was at the time, and in Stratford, Connecticut. When Stephen was eleven, his mother brought her children back to Durham, Maine, for good. Her parents, Guy and Nellie Pillsbury, had become incapacitated with old age, and Ruth King was persuaded by her sisters to take over the physical care of them. Other family members provided a small house in Durham and financial support. After Stephen's grandparents passed away, Mrs. King found work in the kitchens of Pineland, a nearby residential facility for the mentally challenged.

Stephen attended the grammar school in Durham and Lisbon Falls High School, graduating in 1966. From his sophomore year at the University of Maine at Orono, he wrote a weekly column for the school newspaper, THE MAINE CAMPUS. He was also active in student politics, serving as a member of the Student Senate. He came to support the anti-war movement on the Orono campus, arriving at his stance from a conservative view that the war in Vietnam was unconstitutional. He graduated in 1970, with a B.A. in English and qualified to teach on the high school level. A draft board examination immediately post-graduation found him 4-F on grounds of high blood pressure, limited vision, flat feet, and punctured eardrums.

He met Tabitha Spruce in the stacks of the Fogler Library at the University, where they both worked as students; they married in January of 1971. As Stephen was unable to find placement as a teacher immediately, the Kings lived on his earnings as a laborer at an industrial laundry, and her student loan and savings, with an occasional boost from a short story sale to men's magazines.

Stephen made his first professional short story sale ("The Glass Floor") to Startling Mystery Stories in 1967. Throughout the early years of his marriage, he continued to sell stories to men's magazines. Many were gathered into the Night Shift collection or appeared in other anthologies.

In the fall of 1971, Stephen began teaching English at Hampden Academy, the public high school in Hampden, Maine. Writing in the evenings and on the weekends, he continued to produce short stories and to work on novels.

Extremely creepy story about a black-sheep surgeon who gets shipwrecked on a remote island. He has nothing to eat and broke his ankle while chasing a gull. How badly does the castaway want to survive? Interesting, diary style story with some extremely nasty scenes. Definitely not for the faint hearted. A classic King story that is included in his anthology Skeleton Crew. Highly recommended!

Ugh! Quite a macabre short story. I don't know what really to think of the last words in the book. There is no optimism, not much buildup, and little suspense to cloth the skeleton of the story.

I read this story because of an interview on YouTube of King himself. He outlined the tale and I knew it would end on a cliffhanger. Ha!

I think this short appeared in a compilation called Skeleton Crew, a book by Stephen King, of course. He is not the author that I need, or I ever needed. There are many more talented writers than him.

King has undergone a habit of dillydallying. He just is in love with his own words. I'm glad I just dabbled in his world, instead of shelling out for more bloated books of his. Here we part ways.

When I got to the end of feb 5th and I figured out what had happened, I screamed. I literally yelled ‘shit’ at the top of my lungs and scared the hell out of my entire family who is gathered to watch the super bowl. Thanks for the severe mental scarring, Stephen King!!!

Well... that was an underwhelming introduction to Stephen King...

I hated this from beginning to end - a short story relying entirely on shock value and gore that was repulsive without any emotional impact or psychological horror, despite the premise being ripe with potential.

I'm feeling very hesitant to try King again!

Pardon the French, but this baby got me so fucked up. If you can, read it without researching too much beforehand so you have no idea what it is; I feel like it'd work even better that way.

Just know, though, it's King and it's horror. I'm not gonna waste breath on obvious warnings.

Remember the movie Cast Away with Tom Hanks? Picture that movie but written by Stephen King. This was a great (if not somewhat disturbing) short story by King where our character (who could just as well be played by Tom Hanks) is shipwrecked on an island. However, his delirium goes well beyond just talking to a soccer ball. This guy needs to eat....and he's forced to go to extremes to do just that. I'll stop the review right there.

This story is really quite successful in getting the reader into the mind of the main character. The stress, the desperation, and the insanity that develop feel quite real while reading it.

Disgusting? yes. Predictable? yeah. Still couldn't stop reading it.

King said this was his favourite thing he wrote, and honestly I can't see WHY.

His writing literally feels like something written just to be written, and he said it himself, he forces himself to write 4 pages a day, and thats not how good writing is done.

I decided that instead of listening to ASMR while doing my house chores I was going to listen to an audiobook, lol. Stephen King says listening to audiobooks is terrific and he likes it so of course, I made Papa King my first ever (scared and faint yay in the background) I really shouldn't have.

This is The Story of a Shipwrecked Sailor but make it an arrogant creepy Surgeon and a psychologically disturbing atmosphere with a very King-like ending. Amazing.

Also, this particular narrator was so gooood. I don't know if that is something that usually happens because it was my first time listening to one, but I really liked the way he narrated the story and his voice for a King tale was brutal. His name is Lordano and his narration (and I might say his acting as well) was terrific. Lordano's narrating made this book 100 times more disturbing than what it was, and that adds a lot to the listeners experience.

Am I going to listen to a 10-hour book? Hell nah, but I'm getting out of my comfort zone and that feels nice.

I heard about this story as I was perusing ala.org's list of Books Challenged or Banned in 2009-2010. According to ALA, "this story was pulled from a Litchfield, N.H. Campbell High School elective course classroom (2009) after parents voiced their concerns about a short-stories unit called 'Love/Gender/Family Unit' that dealt with subject matters including abortion, cannibalism, homosexuality, and drug use. The parents said the stories promoted bad behavior and a 'political agenda' and they shouldn’t be incorporated into classroom teachings. The Campbell High School English curriculum adviser eventually resigned."

Here we have a fictional diary written by a surgeon who has been stranded on a desert island while smuggling heroin on a cruise ship traveling between the USA and Thailand. He is alone and starving...but since he sees himself as a "Survivor Type" he knows he must use all his resources to survive, even if it means amputation, drug use and self-cannibalism. Stephen King uses the first person perspective to delve into the horrifying question, "Just how far would one go to survive!"

I was afraid to read this because well... it's Stephen King and I've heard horrors about his work. Not in a bad way, I'm just not a fan of horror fiction so yeah. Although it was not very graphic, this short-story was still very, very disturbing and gross.
King writes quite well and the last days of Richard Pine were so convincing. It was clear the character was becoming insane due to lack of food and blood loss. The situation itself was driving him mad. King mad a spectacular job, the story was so realistic and at the same time surreal. This is a great piece of horror fiction, it was twisted and dark. But cannibalism is definitely not my thing.

This is probably one of the creepiest Stephen King short story I have ever read, but I enjoyed the way in which it was written, demonstrating the protagonist's slow mental breakdown while stranded on an island, eating first his ankle and then other body parts to stay alive. NOT for fainthearted!
