Book: Shadow Castes

Series: Aspects - Book 1

Author: Scott Harper

Publisher: DCL Publications LLC

Genre: Paranormal Werewolf/Vampire

Rating: Adult

I want to start this review by saying that this is not your normal werewolf and vampire book. Vampire and werewolf books are very popular but this one is quite unique.

We start off meeting Felix Hollerman, a man who up until two years was quite normal. After a car accident and being in a coma for two days he wakes up with a wolf inside him. He viciously kills and eats a group of people only to wake up in the morning looking like a normal man. His guilt over what happens to him is driving him to desperate measures. Locking himself up in a cage at night, he injectshimself with various substances that would kill a normal human. He can't come to terms with what he is. But then, who could?

His savior arrives in the form of a beautiful woman who is also a lycanthrope, only she was born one. Her name is Nephele Kolb and her job is to get Felix and his wolf to find a balance with one another. She must get him to start eating again and dressing in something other than a robe. He has given up living and is just trying to exist. She tells him that he doesn't shift that he is surrounded by energy projected by the wolf spirit. Is this possible?

Eugen Zahn is a vampire and doesn't keep what he is a secret. He is open about what he is and has even written two books, one about vampires and one his autobiography. He does not drink blood but feeds off energy. He is a Psychic vampire who eats and can be in sunlight. He is wealthy and deeply in love with Charlotte, a Spirit Guardian, invisible to all others but him. He is trying desperately to give her solid form so that they can be together in the flesh. Will he succeed, that is the question? Can love overcome all? We are told there are four types of vampires, we know about the psychic vampires but what are the rest?

While Felix is trying to come to some kind of connection with his wolf, trying to live with it instead of fighting it there is a hunter, Stanton Harris who is determined to rid the world of all werewolves. Will he succeed?

Will people accept Eugen Zahn even though he is a vampire? He does not harm people and just wants to live his life. Can he?

I have read many many vampire and werewolf books but this one has a completely different spin to it. Vampires that don't drink blood, werewolves that don't shift. The book has violence, love and many other surprises in store for the reader. There were some editing problems with the grammar but it did not detract from the story. My only problem with this book is that it has no ending. It is in a word, a cliffhanger. There are no answers just questions. I have no idea when a second book is due but I don't think it is fair to readers to have absolutely no resolution of any kind.
