Everybody knows jumping into unknown waters is suicide. But sometimes it's the only way off the ledge. When Sydney cop Ness meets vivacious surfer boy Charlie, his resolve to never fall in love again shatters. Charlie's carefree life of sun, sand, surf, and sexy men is disrupted when the only way Ness and the emergency response team can save him from a car wreck is to remove his right arm. Charlie needs support and companionship, but as he and Ness take a leap of faith into love, their doubts and fears are compounded by the possessiveness of Charlie's troubled foster brother. Amid physical and emotional chaos, Ness and Charlie fight for the only thing that can save them: each other.
2.5 stars I hate giving bad or negative reviews but I don’t think it’s fair of me to rate and not give some sort of explanation as to why this worked out badly. There was real potential here for a great story, it was ruined with an iffy romance and the unbelievable factor of Joey. I never quite warmed to Charlie and Ness’s relationship, I have to say I didn't feel the emotional spark between this couple.
"Major Spoilers"
I was really looking forward to reading Suicide Point and was excited about it but unfortunately it didn't work for me. I wanted to love it, but no that was never going to happen. I know other readers liked it and will love this story but there were too many bad moments for me to give it a higher rating. Hey it could be just me, so if this is the type of situation that appeals to you, by all means read it and enjoy!
I had such high hopes for this book. The blurb sounded refreshing and I was looking forward to a new author.
Sadly the plot soon became predictable, with a climax that instead of leaving me on the edge of my seat in anticipation, left me puzzled and trying to work out the how and why of it all.
The characters I had trouble connecting with from the start. I wish we got to know Charlie before the accident, then maybe I would have been more interested with how he coped. Likewise if we had learned more about Ness’s past I could of understood the way his mind worked.
There were parts that I felt needed more explanation and others that were the usual sex scene padding.
Overall an interesting read but lacking in emotional connection for me.
On reflextion there really were too many WTH moments so my original 2.5 rounded up to a 3 has been rounded down. Sorry but there were just too many points that just did not add up, mainly the way Ness completely ruled Joey out as a suspect when before we heard him constantly voicing his suspicions about him. The lack of detail with Eddy was another major sticking point with me. While he wasn't a character in the book, his preasence warrented a deeper explanation for me.
Good foster parents that stay in touch after the kids age out!!! You almost never see that!
Cool to recognize that "manly" teams tease you if they like you. Not being teased at all is not a good sign. Other books have MCs taking it way too personally. This was good natured teasing.
Cool that both parents are in the military not just the dad.
Interesting that no one is bringing up the female competition champion one armed surfer. Oh, WAY down the line they do.
Too much sex. It's pretty hot but there's too much of it.
Great that they understand foster siblings are seen as siblings to each other usually, especially if they were raised together. The books where foster siblings date is just disturbing to me on so many levels.
Good danger and hospital scenes.
A couple parts were a little slow moving but overall it was great.
What a drama... The main storyline was emotionally dramatic and hard. Ness was truly a saint compared to Charlie's mood changes and angry outbursts. But then when you fall in love, you are prepared to accept everything to some degree. I truly loved Ness as a character, he was kind, shy and actually great. Those sick games Joey played with Nesses mind was truly sickly mean. On the other side sure Charlie lost his arm, but he gained a life partner. Their path was hard, but worth the trouble. I'm just sad that we didn't get the secure information what happened to Joey.
When Ness is called to the scene of an accident he never expected to see his one night stand from a month ago. Ness spends the next four hours getting to know the beautiful surfer and now he is hooked. Charlie is struggling with losing his arm, but he is happy to see his rescuer again when he is in hospital. They begin a relationship, with both of them working out their personal demons. But, Charlie’s foster brother Joey is hostile and before long Ness and Charlie are fighting for their relationship and each other.
This is an exceptionally well written story of personal demons and outside influences. Charlie is involved in a car crash and loses his arm; Ness is one of his rescuers and also a one night stand. They embark on a relationship that is both difficult and loving, Charlie feels like his life is over and that nobody could possible want him, but Ness slowly helps to build up his confidence and self-image. Ness believes that there is something wrong with him as his last partner shot him and then killed himself. he believes he missed something and made him so unhappy that he tried to kill him. Charlie tries his best to reassure Ness that he couldn’t be happier, but the doubts linger. When things start to go wrong both men blame themselves, but it isn’t long before they realize that they are being manipulated.
I loved this book! The story of Charlie and Ness’ relationship and the psychological minefield that they wade through to find happiness is touching. The progression of the story is well paced and the characters are likable and loveable. Both men are strong characters in their own way, but they are also vulnerable. Charlie’s is mainly self-image and not just what he looks like, but the image of himself as a man who was independent and suddenly having to rely on others for everything and it making him feel like a baby. And, with Ness, it is mainly his own feeling of being unable to keep someone happy and his fear of letting someone else down. When you learn Ness’ background story you can understand that fear.
When you read this book, you can see where the plot is going, but that doesn’t take away anything from the pleasure of this story. There are a lot of psychological problems in this story and not just for Ness and Charlie. Joey, Charlie’s foster brother hates Ness and it isn’t until late in the book that Charlie pieces together all the clues, but by then it just might be too late.
I will recommend this book to those who love emotionally scarred men, harrowing loss, strong characters who take the help of friends, finding love when least expected, some angst, hot loving and a happy ending.
I had good time while reading that book. Plot was full but at the same time I could tell from the beginning toward what will story plot run to. In another words a lot was predictable.
The way I would sum up this book includes dramatic, gripping, dark, and honest in dealing with some major inner demons and life-changing events. The beginning sets up main characters, Ness, a cop, and Charlie, a 'surfer boy' in a way that made me scratch my head a little. They have a one-night stand, both tell themselves that is all they want, and yet each in their own way makes it clear (if only to himself) that they want more. Interestingly, they might never have gotten there without the horrifying events that follow. Rather than tearing them apart, the tragedy of Charlie losing his arm actually pull them closer together.
Charlie has self-esteem issues now that he had to re-learn the most basic things in his life. His family is trying to be supportive, doing everything for him – which is exactly the wrong thing to do. Rather than encouraging Charlie to become self—sufficient, they try to make him dependent. A common reaction, and one that infuriates me every time I see it.
Ness, thank God, sees this and intervenes. Not directly, but by quietly supporting Charlie. Yes, his turnabout from one-night-stand attraction to something deeper was a bit sudden, unexpected even, but I can see how spending time with Charlie as others cut him out of the mangled car, as they removed his arm, has changed Ness to the point where he can start to conquer his own demons.
If you like dramatic stories that tackle real issues, if you enjoy tales with a few twists and a somewhat predictable but nevertheless intimidating villain, and if a hard-fought happy end appeals to you, you may like this novel.
NOTE: This book was provided by Silver Publishing for the purpose of a review on Rainbow Book Reviews.
The blurb of the book sounded really good so I immediately bought it, but it didn't work for me so I quit. At halfway point I found myself still not being invested at all in the two main characters and in their relationship. The book starts with a one night stand between them and Ness basically kicking out Charlie afterwards. Then Charlie loses his arm and all of a sudden it's love. Too fast, there was no basis for any kind of feelings yet in my opinion. Also, at halfway point, I felt I still really didn't know either character and I was tired of the "darling" and "baby". Maybe I just wasn't in the mood for this kind of story. I might get back to it at a later time.
