It is not something I do consciously, but I tend to shy away from stories when I read the words “medical horror”. The reason is not that I have something against these stories, per se, but probably because I’ve been in the medical field for close to 30 years (bet you didn’t know that about me – and no, not going to elaborate on it) and reading horror is part of my escape.

So, I was a little reluctant to tackle this one, and I would have probably pushed it down on my TBR if I didn’t read another short story by this author that greatly impressed me. And I am going to start out by saying that this is an author to watch.

The premise is rather simple:
People with scars and disabilities enter a drug trail that might cure them.

If this had been another genre, that might have been enough, but the words “everything went exactly as planned” rarely makes its way into horror. So…

This story is actually based on the screenplay and movie OBSIDIAN which happened to be written and directed by the author herself, but without having to worry about budget, equipment, schedules, actors and fucking producers, it is a much clearer vision of what she had in mind.

All I can say is that this story is extremely well written, the development of characters should satisfy most readers, and the horror and gore elements are not toned down but it does not really feel extreme, either.

Looking forward to watching Summers’ star rise, because she has the chops and only needs the audience.

WOW, bloody WOW!!
I was having such a great time with this book, I didn’t want it to end.

Once again, Erica has written ANOTHER banger with this awesome book. A creature feature extreme horror, which is filled with blood, gore, and a cast of great, likeable characters…even poor f**ked up Alan.

The characters who all have one thing in common, deep scars on their bodies, are invited to do a clinical trial…a black pill called Obsidian, which will, hopefully, rid them of these scars. Though nothing is that straightforward…

I loved this book so much, that as soon as I put it down to do other things, I was immediately picking it back up again…it was addictive!! Erica has a real talent with her writing, and keeps you hooked throughout.

This ARC was sent to me by the author, and I loved it so much, that it deserves no less than…

This immediately kicks off with a chilling, harrowing and highly descriptive opening chapter, absolutely drawing you in and leaving you wanting more. And the whole dark, disturbing ride gets its talons into you and doesn't let go until the very end. I was completely immersed in this one, it was a lot of fun!

Jack is still suffering from nightmare flashbacks of his accident 4 years earlier, an accident that left him severely disfigured. He struggles with the way he looks now, he won't even have a mirror in the house and he lives with a hoodie permanently covering his features. Once a handsome, popular and confident man, the darkness has become his best friend. So, when he is offered a chance at changing the way he looks, with a clinical trial for a new drug, he grabs it with eager hands.

Once the trial begins, a group of them move into the provided accommodation and Jack feels like he's found a kindred spirit in Iris. They become close and unleash their secrets to each other, becoming the support they each sought out, and when things take a dark turn they come together even more than before.

When Jack meets the Doctor in charge of the trials for the first time, he's confronted with an all too familiar face and it unnerves him a great deal. It's only his guilt and the thought of truly being cured and being able to give back what he feels he took away from an innocent person, making up for his horrific mistake, that makes him stay and continue on.

Jacks friend Mick is also part of the trial, he's wheelchair bound and also hoping to be healed, but he feels that the fact that some of them are being given a placebo and therefore won't get better, is unfair treatment and he decides to take matters into his own hands, recklessly and irresponsibly. When the pills then get into the wrong hands, that's when everything starts to come undone, including their bodies and minds! Panic quickly sets in and causes rash and deadly actions!

Whilst everyone else seems to be healing though, Jack seems to be getting worse. His nightmares are getting worse too, more vivid, more real. His waking nightmares becoming just as horrific, if not, worse! The side effects have also ramped up for everyone and things soon turn savage and darkly sinister! Jack's flashbacks are heartbreaking and horrifying.

One man's desperate mission to save his daughter ends in terrible tragedy for so many more. Giving birth to unthinkable, dark and deadly horrors!

Erica's scene setting and descriptions are vivid and detailed, making you engage yourself fully into the story. Her character building is great too, you immediately form your opinions on them, love or hate. She also keeps the mystery and intrigue flowing the whole time, teasing you along like an evil temptress, making you eat up the words and leaving you longing for more! The story builds at a good and steady pace, little things creeping in the further on you get, teasing you, creeping you out and keeping you guessing. I enjoyed all the backstories of the characters too, it was interesting to understand their reasons for attending the trial and to find out why they are the way they are. The reasons Erica gives for writing her story I also found very interesting, they really give you something to think about!

Also, this had a great ending, maybe leaving room for more in the future? I certainly hope so…. 🖤

This book is awesome! Erica Summers’ ‘Vanity Kills’ offers an amazing blend of medical and body horror, with terrific cinematic prose, skillfully realistic dialogue, lots of character development, and a slow-burn narrative full of dread, regret, and trauma. I really loved the unique premise here; Summers manages to hit the nail on the head when it comes to people who struggle to exist, to be themselves, to realize their true potential. She portrays their plight in quite distinctive ways, always with empathy and a shocking awareness of conflict, both internal and external. Beyond that, however, her new novel is genuinely horrific: Summers knows extreme horror and knows how to make the reader care for the characters and the plot, before unleashing hell on virtually EVERYBODY!

Case in point: a group of amazingly drawn characters get involved in a medicine trial for “Obsidian,” a drug that heals scars, broken bones, and other ailments; supposedly relieving patients from body dysmorphia and other secondary symptoms, Obsidian needs to be administered over three weeks, under close supervision by the doctor leading the trial. But Obsidian is not what it seems, and we are slowly treated to some hair-raising scenes of quite unsavory and disgusting bodily developments, towards directions flesh has no business going. Still, that’s not all: neither are the characters what they appear to be, so there’s a secondary plotline throughout the novel, there’s a love story (incredibly realistic) combined with a sublot of revenge, with people getting mixed up in it, the social dynamics blowing up in a compelling ending!

I just finished reading an advanced copy of Vanity Kills. This is the best effort from Erica Summers yet, which is good news for us, her readers, because she's just getting started.

In Vanity Kills I found a story about body image issues and body dysmorphia (which I found relatable) amid a gory body horror tale (thankfully not so relatable).

Summers is skilled at world-building; this is evident right away. Her characters are fleshed out and believable. Maybe you know a Mick. Perhaps Iris reminds you of a former classmate or coworker. You've almost certainly encountered an Alan.

Each character's actions make sense based on their personalities as written. And, as in the best stories, you mourn the loss of some characters while celebrating the demise of others.

The story drew me in to such a degree that by time the shit really hit the fan in the story, I couldn't read fast enough.

If you are a fan of horror this is a must read, whether you've read Summers' before or not. She is only getting better and readers are lucky for it.

Bloody hell, I won't lie before this book I was considering medical trials. As someone who suffers with long term chronic pain, I got a little desperate. However after reading what Jack endured with the other participants I may have changed my mind. The first Chapter is a vivid and beautifully written nightmare sequence that sets the tone for the book. As he joins his friend Mick in a trial of a new drug which "zones in on the traumatised tissue to facilitate ultra-rapid restoration in full."
So we get to meet Seven willing guinea pigs in the form of Iris, Chase, Mick, Angie, Alan, Fisher and of course Jack. All locked away in a building in the Bayou under the watchful eye of Nurse Tate.
As we get to know and understand the character's reasons for doing the trial. You come to understand their desperation and the pain they feel everytime they look in the mirror. Erica is always good at getting her characters' emotions across and this is no exception. The depth and detail she goes into with the backstories, Iris in particular was heartbreaking. The connection she builds with Jack is beautifully portrayed as she struggles to trust again after the trauma she endured. I think this story is also a way for each one of them to find acceptance in some way, while struggling with the demons of their past. This means their hope and desperation to be normal, makes them willing prey for what is to come.
I feel like Jack was most definitely a prey in this scenario especially considering his past with Dr Walsh. Which believe me, plays a big part is the horrors to unfold, honestly it starts with a build up. Getting to know the characters and building the relationships between each of them. There is a lot of trauma, a lot of body dysmorphia themes through this story. So when the shit hits the fan, THE SHIT HITS THE FAN. You will not be able to stop reading, everything from the horrifying assault in Chapter 65 to the heartbreaking reality of Dr Walsh's motives. Will have you on the edge of your seat and the horror, gore and suspense is just *chef's kiss* perfect. Trust me when I tell you, the conclusion is SO worth it. Erica excels with her storytelling abilities in this book, showcasing pain and horrors so relatable but some incredibly believable. Yeah. I am not in a hurry to do any clinical trials, knowing my luck I will end up with a sentient Uterus.. Oh wait, I already wrote that one! This story on the other hand is creative, terrifying and beautifully written. WE NEED MORE ERICA!

I thought this was a very impressive book, combining wince-inducing body horror with strong characterisation, and an interesting take on the medical sub-genre. I was initially unsure of how easy it would be to keep track of a fairly large cast of main characters as we are introduced to them at the start of the new drug trials, but Summers does an excellent job of making them all feel distinct, and fleshing out their personalities.

Vanity Kills is very well written, with impressive prose throughout, which only adds to the effectiveness of the gore once it starts. There were frequent moments in which the descriptions were so visceral and vivid that it was easy to imagine them playing on a big screen, and disturbing enough that you can imagine the likes of Cronenberg or Ducournau salivating to get the chance to bring those effects to life. Some of the best examples of body horror I can remember reading in a long, long time.

The narration from Jake Blagburn was excellent throughout, giving just enough personality to each protagonist to make it easy to differentiate between who was currently speaking, and to keep the listens interesting. The pacing of his reading combined with the fast nature of the plot made this absolutely breeze by for me, finishing the audiobook in a little over a day.

This is an easy recommend to anyone interested in medical & body horror, with a compelling story crafted around the more disgusting moments, and a few twists and turns that I didn't see coming.

Vanity Kills

Erica kindly send me an Audible code for this one & wow was it an action packed listen 😱👏🏼

After a traumatic crash left Jack with burns all over his body he is left with nothing but guilt and remorse. He can’t look in the mirror without being reminded by his past that nearly killed him. So when he’s referred for a pharmaceutical trial that will repair damaged scar tissue, essentially removing deep rooted scars he jumps at the chance, no questions asked.

He joins a whole group at the clinic, who have equally traumatic stories regarding their scars & they all want the same thing, to heal & forget it ever happened. They all start the trial & some see results, watching there scars vanish before there eyes, it’s all too good to be true right…

Right! Mike thinks it’ll be funny to mix all the pills up so no one will know who has the placebo & soon enough weird things start happening, black goo starts pooling out of wounds & pain comes back ten fold! Alongside having hallucinations that feel so real, going as far as sleeping together & having no recollection of it the next day.

Only now is it time to question what these drugs are, should they have really taken them as willingly & will they survive the aftermath of a crooked doctor with nothing but revenge on his mind.

Wow this was AMAZING! I didn’t know what direction it was going to pull me in but the twisty ending 👌🏻👏🏼 I’m absolutely loving Erica’s books 😍 already can’t wait to read the next one! 🤎

Makesure to check your triggers! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

VANITY KILLS follows a handful of patients who enter an experimental medicine trial for a new drug that promises to cure their otherwise lifelong ailments. Dr. Walsh heads the experiment at a private location where he administers the drug, Obsidian to patients over the course of a few weeks.

The patients are kept on a state of the art campus where they can lodge and receive medical treatment. Their journals provide an excellent log of their symptoms that the reader is exposed to through evidence logs with the local police after the experiment has ended.

Extreme horror is not my preferred subgenre of horror, but VANITY KILLS hit all the marks for me. It’s cinematic roots (in the film OBSIDIAN) are evident from the first few scenes. Summers drops you right into the story and refuses to let you look away from what is happening.

As the patients and staff mingle throughout the days of the experiment, we get to learn more about their individual reasons for signing up for the trial. The characters are well developed and eerily familiar. We all know someone like Iris, Jack, Mick and the rest of the cast.

If you’re looking for a story that does not hold back on gore, body horror, and fantastic character development, you need to read VANITY KILLS.

I received an ARC copy of this book for review. This does not influence or impact my feelings on this book.

I want to thank the author for providing me with an ebook in exchange for an honest review.

Back in December, I read Feed the Machine by Summers. That short story was good, I loved the vibe and the setting, but I wanted more! So, I figured I would try out Vanity Kills to fill that void.

I usually don't start with talking about the characters, but these ones were good. They were diverse, you got to know them all, and although there were quite a few to keep up with, it wasn't too hard. I usually struggle to keep up with a lot of characters. It was easy to get attached to some of the characters, especially the main character, Jack. We get to see the characters at their highest highs and lowest lows in this one.

This was a slow burn, and it was done well. There was always something going on and an uneasy feeling throughout which grew with each chapter. The body horror was on point and was appropriately gross. The concept for this book was awesome, and it was executed well.

I really enjoyed reading this one, and I'm giving it a 4.5⭐️s rounded to 5 where applicable. I would recommend this book for those wanting a slow burn, body/medical horror, great characters, and a captivating story.

I had the pleasure of reading an ARC of this book by Erica Summers. I don't usually like slowburns too much but once I started, I finished it in less than a week-a record almost! The characters and storytelling drew me in instantly and I had to know what was going to happen.
The story centres around a group of people-all with trauma and terrible backgrounds-being used as voluntary guinea pigs for a miraculous new drug that cures flesh wounds. Main character, Jack, suffers the worst; his body literally covered in burns after a car crash. But we discover something is not right at all--strange dreams and hallucinations, something that appears to be growing within their bodies, trying to claw its way out. And soon, that something will manifest itself and put all their lives in terrible danger....
Like I said, the writing style was excellent, each character well-developed, all with their own flaws that kept me gripped. It's marketed as extreme horror but it's good for everyone, not overly gory like many others. Definitely one of my favourite reads this year!

Another great story from this author! It's a thriller, it's a body horror and it also contains an important message underneath all the dreadful things happening. Thanks also to the narrator Jake Blagburn for making the characters real and for the perfect acting!

I was surprised more than once as the plot never went where I thought, keeping me on my toes. I found the writing really on point with every word serving a purpose, either in the moment or down the line. As for the characters, well I did sympathise a lot with all of them, and for all the horrible things, I couldn't not have an emotional attachment to them. And that's the thing in this story, even characters I know I should have hated, I just couldn't.

As mentioned, this is a body horror and whilst I agree that our society is losing control of what's really important, I know I probably would have acted the same way as Jack and the others, and I would have tried to tackle some mental and emotional scarring in the same way, thinking that would have solved the problem. What the protagonists find out though, is that some things can't be solved that easily and they learn an important lesson just a little too late.

Thanks to the author and Rusty Ogre Publishing for a code and this is my honest opinion.

Gripping and brutal - 4/5

This was my first full novel by Erica Summers and it won't be the last. This one features Jack as he takes part in a medical trial for a wonder drug, which if it works, would erase all of the scars which cover parts of his face, chest and one arm. A big chunk of the book covers the reasons why Jack got the scars as well as how it's affected him mentally. It also shows him getting to know the other participants in the trial and creates a mystery about the drug and how it affects them. This helped to build up reasons to like the characters (and learn their flaws) and start to care for them before the brutal ending where the gore and body horror gets turned up to 10.

The ending was great and fit the book well and made it into a very enjoyable read. The book is well-written and I'll be adding more from Erica to my to-read list.

Vanity Kills is an impressive read that mixes medical and body horror while diving into big themes like identity, self-acceptance, and the pressure society puts on us about beauty. The story follows a clinical trial for a mysterious drug that promises to fix physical issues like scars and broken bones, plus help with body dysmorphia. But as things progress, it becomes clear that the drug has some really dark secrets, leading to unsettling changes in the participants and some shocking events that turn their lives upside down.
Summers creates a gripping horror story that pulls readers in, skillfully showcasing characters grappling with their insecurities and desires. Each character feels genuine and multi-dimensional, helping readers really connect with their struggles and quests for authenticity.

Would you undergo a completely experimental test to possibly remove any scars or ailments, even if you are completely unsure of any side effects?

In Vanity Kills, seven people said yes, yes they would. From a model with an appendectomy scar, to a paralyzed man, to a woman with a vicious scar from a hideous attack, they all agreed to be Dr. Walsh's guinea pigs. They would be paid handsomely to live in a test center for three weeks while they are given a new drug called Obsidian, a pill that comes with the promise of getting rid of any old scars and ailments.

Jack is riddled with burns from a car accident years back that killed his wife (in a rather... interesting death scene). He is extremely self conscious of these, and has found life very difficult in the time after recovery. He is desperate to get rid of them, even after seeing who was behind the study.

Does the treatment work? And if it does, at what cost?

The characterization is STRONG in Vanity Kills. It's a slow burn that doesn't really feel like one. Once you get to the true meat of the book, it's brutal and it's descriptive, and you can really see everything well in your head. And the last third of the book really hits hard when everything finally comes together.

If you're looking for a disturbing and fascinating look into body horror, this is the book for you.

Vanity Kills by Erica Summers was extremely intriguing from the very beginning. I knew I had to read this book. I wanted to know more about this miracle pill obsidian and what it had to offer. I loved the plot and how eventually you were able to learn more back story about each character and why they had wanted to be a part of this experimental medical trial promising extraordinary results. The end was a whirl wind of emotions, and absolutely terrifying to think how everything can change so quickly and there is no way to avoid fate once it started. I highly recommend sinking into the abyss of obsidian and those that consumed it.

This was my second read from Summers and while I liked my introduction to her, this one really showed her ability to write. The story was captivating and had some surprising scenes scattered throughout that played a role in some of the social commentary of the book. I had a little bit of difficulty picturing what exactly the creatures looked like, but they were pretty frightening from what I was able to picture. I really liked the dark tone that this one had that didn't lighten up, not even as it offered up that perfectly bleak ending.

Overall I enjoyed this book, and the last quarter is gory, descriptive, and has a good twist.
My negatives on this book are that it takes 3/4 of the book until you get to all the horror elements, I found going from 1st person books to this 3rd person one to be really strange initially, and the writing style took a bit for me to get into - it seemed to be too descriptive on things that weren't necessary as if to up the word count.
Was a great palate cleanser between genres for me, and I really enjoyed all the gory chapters.

Vanity Kills by Erica Summers

5/5

Vanity Kills features all of Summers' trademark cinematic and beautiful prose as well as some intense body horror.

I lost count of how many times I was shocked by the descriptions and the things going on in this book.

We get treated to one of the most traumatic car crashes I've ever read and some completely batsh*t crazy twists and turns in the story.

If you know what you're getting yourself into, Vanity Kills is like going to an amusement park and riding a roller-coaster that hurtles around multiple loops then ends by crashing into a river of blood.

Is this book really 300+pages? Because I flew through it like it was novella length or something. Which is a good sign. It meant I was busier paying attention to the story than the clock. I'm super curious about this being a movie (which the author hinted about at the end) . Medical stuff always fascinates me, especially experiments of medicine, so this book grabbed my attention once I was made aware of its existence. I recommend this book for people who enjoy the same

Vanity Kills by Erica Summers

Let’s start with the cover for this one! It boasts “an extreme body horror novel”, and while that’s true, it’s so much more than that. The characters are all flawed and complicated in a way that keeps us invested in their stories. The writing is easy to follow with subtle hints of what’s to come without giving away the twist. I would recommend this one for thriller readers as well as horror.

Just finished this awesome book!!!

Overall 5 stars!

This follows a group of people trying an experimental drug to cure their “flaws.” Unfortunately, the side effects might be worse than their current issues.

It has excellent character development. It takes awhile to get going but the juice is worth the squeeze.

The narrator was good but he read super fast and breathed loudly at times.

I definitely recommend you pick this one up!

Loved this book. The slow build up for an action packed end. I love how the story and characters develop. I like how each of thier back stories come out at the right moments throughout the book and not like a big group sit down where everyone reveals why they are at the trial. Some may say a slow burn but I think the story really needed it to complete the ending.

The book was amazing. A little pill can do almost anything thanks due to modern science. A new pill on the market is to get rid of scars.
