On October 28, 1862, the Hoopers break into the house of the Watson family and kill three men, injure and resultantly kill one teenage girl, and rape another young woman. Nine-year-old Nathe Watson is a witness to this western North Carolina Mountain massacre, but escapes through a window to get help at the urging of his mother. When he returns, it is to find the heads of the men atop pike poles on display in his front yard. Sent by his mother to live in Tennessee with a cousin, Nathe changes his last name to Milsaps for protection and stays there until he reaches the age of twenty. He returns to the mountains, burdened with the desire for revenge. He is forced to find work to sustain himself as he searches for the men that murdered his family. A young civil-war widow, Addie Fisher, and her two young children, Davie and Clare, are on the verge of starvation when Nathe comes to work with a promise of three square meals and a barn roof over his head. He is torn with fear he will be found by the Hoopers and the growing desire for a family that may never happen. Sickness, fire, and death abound as they plant crops and repair decaying structures, but so do love, family, and loyalty. Nathe keeps away from most residents of Rich Mountain but one, known only as Amps, seems to know too much and offer unwanted advice on things that pertain to Nathe…things he thought no one knew. There is an unknown fact about Addie which could threaten everything. Something Nathe never thought to ask and Addie never assumed to share. Laugh, cry, and work through the need for REVENGE with these true-to-life Appalachian mountain families.
First Book I have read by this Author. This was a really good book about hate, bitterness and revenge. The story line was how Nathe, at 10 years old, watched his family being murdered, beaten and his sister raped. His mother survived for a year after the attack. She sent him to Tennessee, to live with a childless Aunt and Uncle, for a fresh start and also for his own safety. Nathe planned his revenge for 10 years, to come back and murder the family members who murdered his family. Kinda like a Hatfield and Macoy feud situation. When Nathe came back no one knew who he was and that he was back for revenge. There is some supernatural happenings that occur throughout the book as well. A VERY good read and you don't find out how it is going to end until the last couple of chapters. This book kept me very interested and I wanted to keep reading to see what was going to happen.
I chose this rating for the fact that this was well written and a smooth read. The hatred that Natre carried around for years had made him bitter until he fell in love. The power of love to heal with the added twist of a ghost. A great read. I truly enjoyed this book and couldn't wait to pick it back up to finish.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book about a young man seeking murderous revenge for a wrong that occurred in a family feud. His own goodness and the power of love pull him from the darkness. This narrative is filled with details of mountain life and survival. I couldn't put it down.
I really enjoyed this book! Well written and a great story, it had suspense drama and anything else you might want. You will become invested in the characters. I also appreciated that the characters were mountain folks. I also appreciated that their characters were celebrated for their hard work and character.
I love books about the 1800’s and mountain people. This book did not disappoint. Kind of a weird ending, but all in all a very nice read. Am glad there are more books in this series
This is a great read. I lived in the area the story is set in, and her characters feel “right.” Had to take off one star for some minor formatting and typo/grammatical issues. But they weren’t bad enough to make me stop reading!
Could hardly put this book down! It hits so close to home as the places in the story are so close to my hometown. Definitely worth reading the whole series!
Such a good story full of surprises, but also satisfying occurrences. I can’t wait to read the next one. Literally read the whole book on a snow day and ready for the second.
Lots of suspense in this one! You can feel the tension on every page! In this story, a man returns to his childhood home to exact revenge for the abuse and murder of his family, a tragedy that occurred during his childhood. Interestingly, while seething in hatred he finds friendship, love, and the possibility for a future with a most unlikely person. He is further confronted with a stranger, who befriends and advises him under mysterious circumstances that are not made clear until the climax---just when the ultimate decision must be made. It's an intense story that really makes you think on what it truly means to live.
Loved this book! I felt like I was there. Ann did a GREAT job on making you feel, hear, and taste what she wrote. It was so exciting even more because I know and love her! I would recommend this book and I plan to buy the ones to follow~
