This book is no longer in print or available, originally in was a beta version for testing the water so to speak. A new, fully completed version is available, called Among the Fallen: Genesis.
I'm friendly enough, I get really grouchy and especially on certain things. If I'm grouchy trust me, it's not personal. There's normally a reason behind it that's probably not your fault, if it is your fault I'll quietly tell ya.
What do I do?
Much Stuff.... I actually get bored doing one thing, so I've got like multiple jobs, tasks, projects and hobbies. Different days, different amusements thats my theory. Amazingly having a brain that actually gets bored just sitting, is a curse of sorts, people interest me, their brains especially... i like stuff that makes me think.
I have never judged anyone on anything they do... one mans poison is another mans fun, But when you step out of your own shoes and into someones mind for a just a few moments... you walk away with that little bit extra. I learn from peoples experiences other than my own, thats why we have voices after all.
I was very skeptical, it was presented to me by a friend who lives in Arizona, she said its worth a look. So I bought it, along with a few others but read it last as I do with most recommendations. I'm a sucker for good Gothic horror and for a book, I found the cover almost too enticing, the artwork is fantastic and so I eventually sat down to give it read.
It's a weird one this, because it doesn't read like normal books, in fact, it defies all the known book rules to be a good decent read. It's both narrated and told by the protagonist (Alexandra Beaumont), it's gut enchantingly horrible but worded almost gracefully, with wording and story telling of beautiful quality. It's like a ballet of fear and roller-coaster of events that seemingly, have no event construction at all. But that's not a bad thing!
I'm not going to give the plot away, I'll just give you a vague outline. Basically, the girl (and her sister) are murdered on their way home from school. Alex is the foster mum and sister of little Sarah, who is described as the apple of her eye. The relationship between the two is beautifully told and almost instantly you're feeling the love between them.
On the way home, as I said before, they are murdered when they caught between a crossfire of two warring individuals. Stunningly told and deeply heart breaking, Alex and Sarah are parted by death, and Alex is thrown into the darkness of the afterlife. Three months later she awakens and is forced to play a biblical game where she is promised by the Fallen, that if she wins, her morbid history and the deaths of her and Sarah will be put right.
This book is so well written, so well described and crafted that despite being a horror, it's a treat to read. According to Amazon, this is just part one of four. Already I'm begging for the next installment and counting the days down. If a horror could ever be a graceful opera of emotion and description, Among the Fallen is certainly it. The two writers, although unknown at the moment, are going to be awesome rivals of Steven King, James Herbert, Clive Barker and anyone that steps in their shoes. From what I've read, Among the Fallen is going to be sleeper hit, at the moment its still an unknown, but something tells me that in time, it will be a cult classic.
Quite possibly, the best horror I've read so far ever. It plays mind games with you, it taps into you're imagination and leaves you haunted for a very long time. With another three installments on the way, I'm almost drooling in anticipation. 5 stars!
Among the Fallen, that elusive title that took yonks to appear and yet, its all over the web. 50 Shades of Fallen, maybe? But strangely, I have read this 3 times, every time was as creepy as the last.
One thing I found completely fascinating about Among the Fallen is its brass --- its completely relentless, you are the victim of some strange and banal world that seems to be pulled over your eyes and shredding your perceptions of afterlife, demons, angels and the whole physical and material horror per say.
Imagine your walking through the street, a van pulls over and a bunch of extremists put a sack over your head, hold you captive for a few hours without saying a word, then throw back into the street without so much of a sorry or parting of goodbye. That is what Among the Fallen is like. It effortlessly generates fear that you feel on a personal level.
To be fair - its a bloody good read, its terrifying, thought provoking and almost perfect in its design. Its almost flawless (aside one or two typos) The hardest thing is, seeing the world from the writers eyes, it tells you everything you need to see, its so descriptive, imagination is effortless; but thats part of its design. Some, will undoubtedly find it over graphic, while others will lap it up.
There are three factions in Among the Fallen.
(1) The Living: Yes there are people in it, not many. Alex and a Doctor, who seems to be shady and has secrets of his own. But the heroine of the story, Alex - is something else entirely. She is almost perfect in her creation, a normal human being with conscience, morality, judgement and personality. In a way, the book lays out our history, her personality and her shortcomings very early in the book, but where I thought this was some sort of cop-out at the start, further reading proved this to be viable and exceptable so that the writers could change and adapt her personality realistically around the events that transpire - so its a very clever move.
(2) The Dead: Most would call these guys zombies, but the writers don't call them zombies, they are referred to as Cadavers. Now to me, these guys are underused, they are about, and they chew on Alex every moment they get, but we need more "cadaver" action - something, that we are promised, will be covered more in book 2, however, when these guys show, they show in epic style. The best part of these guys are their styling. It's almost like the writers have "rebooted" the whole zombie genre with a point of realism. They dont chase, they follow. Every effort has been made to make these guys stand alone from such zombies in say, the walking dead, dawn of the dead and Zombi. These truly are dead, they act dead, they look dead, and they move as if the whole idea was approached from a scientific perspective. They dont run, walk fast or even moan and groan as zombies are mostly portrayed. They are silent and lethal followers that hide in the shadows. These things are silent, spooky and downright creepy. The best incarnation of a zombie ive ever come across.
(3) The Fallen: These things are few and far between, they are the reason behind the fall of the city. They are at first glance, eerily similar to the cenobites from Clive barkers hell raiser, but with added charm, cheerless and miserable - with descriptions so vivid you can almost feel the pain.
Overall: Its not often a title comes along that incorperates all the good things in all other horrors without ripping anything off. Its a good solid page turner, theres a huge conspiracy element going on and the city is a mass of death and destruction that beautifully told almost romantically. 5 stars and very well deserved.
This book is amazingly frustrating. It's so close to a 4 or 5 star book. The hellish setting is breathtakingly imagined and conveyed. The plot line isn't "smack in the face cause I think I'm smart enough to fool my readers when actually I am just reproducing a story told 8 million times over." Some of the action, (the blind butcher), reads well enough for the imagination to watch the movie in your head. The heroine just might turn into the next official baddest mofo in town as the story arc continues in the next books and the plot device to keep the heroine growing (the suit) works well. There's blood and guts and evil all around and yet it doesn't feel gratuitous. I really wanted to love this book but... The dialogue of the hero is ridiculous, not only is she completely illiterate despite being "royal" blood in her city of a million residents but the author's European slang peeks through a few times revealing how clueless he is about American dialects. (We don't wear trainers in the USA, especially those whose vocabulary is so limited like Alex, it would be sneakers). Alex's verbal words weren't consistent in terms of vocabulary and structure with her inner dialogue. I cringed every time her mouth opened. The Fallen Guides where too cliche and too convenient. The similiarity to Pinhead and the Cynobytes never broke in my head. I know, I know, "there's nothing new under the sun" but this author has the underlying talent to make the Fallen refreshing and new, it just didn't happen. And their repeated appearances to explain just enough for Alex to trudge on felt like cop out. The material needed to further the plot could have been introduced in a better way. Alex could have figured it out on her. And the book just stops. There is no mini arc to make it a completed act in the story. And worse, I've found it impossible to find the rest of the books for less then $80. I would love to recommend the story because the imagination and talent of the author are there and I think he might just be getting started. The following books have a good chance to redeem this portion of the story. But as a stand alone book, it falls short. Maybe it will find it's way to the audience but for now, the marks are low because I was left unsatisfied and frustrated!
I'm going to start by saying that this book is unlike anything I have ever read before. This book really introduced me to the world of horror books, and has made me want to stay here.
I had a few problems with this book though. Firstly, every time Alex opened her god damned mouth, I died a little inside. Perhaps the worst horror in this book is her butchering the English language. She really came across like a uneducated street urchin. And I wanted one of the fallen to sew her mouth shut. Her thoughts however, were completely the opposite of a crass simpleton and often intelligent and beautifully written. Luckily, she rarely actually speaks in this book. Very rarely. Its a very good thing.
Secondly, I found the horror elements could at times be slightly overdone with just every single piece of horror imagery you have ever seen crammed into the one scene, and then again crammed into the next scene and then the next. To the point that I found myself rolling my eyes in a few parts. That being said, there were however also scenes in this book where the imagery blew my freaking mind. And these were the places were what you were being described were something completely new and completely amazing.
My biggest problem with this book is that I REALLY, REALLY want to play a video game of this. I know its been said before that this book reads like a video game, but it completely does. The suit she wears in particular, the puzzles, the levels, the bosses. She even kind of levels up. Its all there. I could even pick which parts would be game play, which would be cut scenes and which parts would be tutorials. It really is a video game in book form. It is something completely new and wonderful and Its a game I really want to play.
I really liked this book and I will definitely be reading the next one. And seriously hoping these guys get a video game deal.
This is an extremely bizarre title, so much so, that i'm confused about how to go about this review.
Firstly, it does not read like a normal book, so the question is, should it be reviewed like a normal book? I read the reviews on here, which are mainly good, so i dug deeper, finding blinding reviews from everywhere else, except Amazon. Now the big question is, why is this book loved every except with Amazon readers? As an aspiring authour myself, we all know Amazon comments are as trustable as a glass hammer, its a well known fact that other authors deliberately downplay books or competition sharing the same genre, and after reading Resurrection, its obvious that there are a lot of authors fearing this title.
So I read it.
Its strange to say the least, its played out in acts. Like chapters, but each chapter being a place the heroine visits. Its not perfect, I felt that I was being force fed horror and gore, but to be fair, it did the job well. Being the first part, resurrection only hints at an actual story, we only know what the heroine knows and its frustrating. There is a story in there somewhere, but its our imagination that creates the story. Its very clever in some ways, normally a book tells the story, our imagination creates the surroundings. But resurrection actually does the complete opposite. I would have given it five stars, but the abrupt end, and the fact that I am desperate to read book 2 seems more of a deliberate move. I loved this book, its new, fresh and sinister in every way. Maybe i should give it 5 stars, it deserves 5 stars for creativity, imagination, structure and horror, but being just the start, I felt cheated. Reading book 2 now, i guess only time will tell and maybe the story will flesh out more.
Great book, loved it, but I need more to go on xxx
I would give this three and a half if I could and to be upfront it's not my normal genre. I felt it was a bit of a battle through the destruction, blood, entrails and general gore, ok, ok I get the destruction, more story please. When there was no ending and another book to follow, sorry I don't think I could face it. Oh no I sound like a girl... I can see why people who like this genre give it five stars but I just don't think I could battle through another book with probably a third to face as well.
How I review... 1 star - binned it before half way, please don't write anymore!!! 2 stars - finally binned it after really trying, I mean really trying and I hate to not finishing someth.... 3 stars - finished it but boy was that hard work on times, it just about hooked me back in as I was about to dump it 4 stars - great book but it lacked something, something, can't put my finger on it but.... something 5 stars - want more, more books, more movies about the books, more movies about the authors and the making of the movie, just more!!!
Read this book in a week, type of book that has the hairs stand up on the back of your neck! excellent detail which gives your imagination a picture in your head of what the characters all look like
