First of all, this is dictionary style, so I wasn't surprised it became a slow read for me. It has plenty of info, and pictures and illustrations of some of the things and beings listed (Some on the page before or after, depending on space needed) and plenty of side notes and cross-referencing, but the author tends to pile everything into one entry. Ancient Egypt had many deities called 'Horus' for example, but for the entry 'Horus' they're all kinda smashed together into one general being. Wasn't too fond of that personally, but it is in dictionary style, it's not a full-on dictionary where you get 'Horus, Son of Isis' and 'Horus, The Elder' separated into subcategories of the same entry for example.
First, this is meant to be a reference to the gods and symbols of ancient Egypt, it is written as a "dictionary," and the topics alphabetically arrayed. Also was translated from German book from 1970's and I wonder if that contributes to some of the clunkiness and errors (page 128 spelling errors: in the body it says "Wedjat-eye" but in the illustration it stated "Wedjet-eye" for the left eye of Horus. For a dictionary I really wish there was more details, but the illustrations are really fantastic-many I have not run across before. I would think pre-internet this would be invaluable, now, it is interesting but I found myself using it as a general starting point then having to go research more information on topics of interest. Illustrations and the Chronological Table of Egypt in the back (pages 132-135) were nice.
Det fungerer rigtig godt, at der i begyndelsen af bogen er en beskrivelse af livet i det gamle Ægypten, og der efterfølgende er opslagsværk i resten af bogen med forklaringer på relevante begreber og navne med forbindelse til religionen i den tid. Sproget er også letforståeligt. Desværre opstår meget spildplads omkring visse billeder og illustrationer, og layoutet er altså ikke helt som det kunne have været, og der mangler lidt forklaring på nogle myter og fortællinger fra datidens religion.
Title in German: Götter und Symbole der Alten Ägypter
All important gods and symbols of ancient egypt (more than 350 headwords) are arranged in alphabetical order in this lexicon. The descriptions are short and give only a general overview but if you need more specific information you have to look elsewhere. It´s convenient for taking it with you on a journey as a quick reference book.
Nice to have an organized view of the Egyptian gods and symbols. It was, though, perhaps a little too simple. I felt that it confused me from time to time with the things that weren't explained. But for just a general knowledge Egyptian mythology it works okay.
