Letters to Rio

Rate this book

I'd been in love with Elena since I was just a kid. She had been my best friend in the entire world until one day my world got flipped inside out and I left. I left her behind without even a murmur, I didn't look back until news broke that she was moving on and then I couldn't stay away a moment longer.

Rio was my first love, he taught me compassion and patience and I worshiped him until one day, he upped and left. Radio silence followed. Six years of writing letters, six years of hoping and wishing that he would return and then I gave up. But giving up never solved anything.

Anna White did it again. The angst, the longing, the soul-deep love—everything you can expect from one of her novels.

Elena and Rio, childhood best friends, give in to each other when they are just teenagers, but neither of them has doubts about their young love. When Rio is forced to move back with his mom for the summer, Elena keeps writing letters to him, like she always has, until his promised return when school starts. When Rio doesn’t return, her letters continue, refusing to give up on him or on them.

There is something almost ethereal about Anna’s writing; pair it with her minimal style and raw emotions, and you have yourself a breathtaking story. This one isn’t quite as heavy as she’s written in the past, but it’s sprinkled with her signature angst. The slow burn is almost torture, but she makes up for it at their reunion.

Rio, our broken boy, is brooding, self-loathing, temperamental, and just as delicious as all her men, and he pairs perfectly with our sweet Elena. Elena is kind, strong, and loyal to almost a fault; she's perfect. They are the ideal grumpy/sunshine. Add that to friends-to-lovers, and second-chance, and I feel spoiled with all my favorite tropes in one novel.

Anna, thank you for the ARC and another beautiful story!
xoxo

If anyone knows me, they'll know I'm a sucker for books written by Anna. This one is no exception.

From smitten childhood sweethearts to lifelong lovers. Even if it does take a while to get there.

When rio leaves to visit his mum, Elena communicates through her love of letters. Except Rio isn't getting the letters. He's getting disappointed and the sense of abandonment from his best friend. So when he returns home, a huge wedge has been driven through the pair.

Those who were once best friends were now total strangers.

Until one night.

I'm not going to say anymore around the story to this as it was so heart wrenchingly beautiful. The story had you gripped turning the pages to find out what happens next. The build-up and suspense were on point. I loved every moment of this book.

If anyone asks me if I would recommended this book, 100% without hesitation.
