Born in Owosso, Michigan he left high school without graduating but was able to pass the entrance exams to the University of Michigan where he studied journalism. In 1900, Curwood sold his first story while working for the Detroit News-Tribune. By 1909 he had saved enough money to travel to the Canadian northwest, a trip that provided the inspiration for his wilderness adventure stories. The success of his novels afforded him the opportunity to return to the Yukon and Alaska for several months each year that allowed him to write more than thirty such books.
By 1922, Curwood's writings had made him a very wealthy man and he fulfilled a childhood fantasy by building Curwood Castle in Owosso. Constructed in the style of an 18th century French chateau, the estate overlooked the Shiawassee River. In one of the home's two large turrets, Curwood set up his writing studio. Curwood also owned a camp in a remote area in Baraga County, Michigan, near the Huron Mountains.
An advocate of environmentalism, Curwood was appointed to the Michigan Conservation Commission in 1926. The following year, while on a Florida fishing trip, Curwood was bitten on the thigh by what was believed to have been a spider and had an immediate allergic reaction. Health problems related to the bite escalated over the next few months and infection set in that led to his death from blood poisoning.
Interred in the Oak Hill Cemetery in Owosso, his Curwood Castle is now a museum. During the first full weekend in June of each year, the city of Owosso holds the Curwood Festival to celebrate the city's heritage . Also in his honor, a mountain in L'Anse Township, Michigan was given the name Mount Curwood, and the L'Anse Township Park was renamed Curwood Park.
Engrossing story of a puppy and a bear cub who both tragically lose their mothers, get adopted by a kindly hunter, get separated from him on a wild canoe ride, and end up wandering around the Northern wilderness together for many months, just trying to survive. (Beware, even though this dog and bear have a sweet relationship with each other, they do not have a Disney relationship with the bunnies and other animals they need for food!) The descriptions of their wilderness travels, and the relationships, good and bad, they make with animals and humans along the way are very compelling. And it wouldn't be a J. O. Curwood novel without just a bit of chaste romance and obsessing over a woman's long, silky hair. First published in 1919, I listened to this as a free audio download from LibriVox.org., read to me by a very talented reader.
Beautiful. I am grateful to goodreads for introducing me to James Oliver Curwood. I am listening to the audiobooks which have been recorded by Librivox.org, they are free to stream online or download through audiobook apps,so far all have been very well read.
A tale of danger, friendship and survival. Follows a young dog and bear cub as they face the wide world together over spring, summer, autumn, and into winter. Ages 8-99.
This book was absolutely gorgeous. I seriously love James Oliver Curwood's writings and I'm so glad my mum recommended him to me. I've always loved reading from an animal's POV and this book was amazing cause not only did I get to read from a dog's perspective, I also got to read from a bear's. IT WAS AMAZING.
Neewa is absolutely gorgeous. From when he was born to when he was a big fat bear, I loved him. He was just so ADORABLE. That big fat pudgy body, the constant eating, and when he went into hibernation, not even noticing that Miki had left. He's just soooo cute. I was really sad when Noosak, his mother, got shot by Challoner but at the same time - that's what the wild is like. AND HEY, IT MEANT THAT HE GOT TO MEET MIKI.
Miki was sooo cute. When he was a puppy, I loved how friendly he was towards Neewa. He was just such a gorgeous, awkward pup but when he got older and started fending for himself in the wild on his own during the Winter months (when Neewa was hibernating) I really adored him. He was so smart, so strong and so brave. I'm amazed how he managed to get through all the horrible experiences he had, from Jacque Le Beau to Durmont. AND YAY FOR CHALLONER.
At the very start, when Challoner shot Noosak, I hated him. But then when he rescued Miki he was AWESOME. And then when he met Nanette, and everything worked out to be one big happy family with Neewa, Miki, Nanette, "little" Nanette and Challoner, it was perfect. <3
This was a really cute story and I loved it to pieces. Definitely something I would reread again and again. It was absolutely gorgeous.
As a kid, I watched the Disney movie of this book a million times. I think it's called Niki, Wild Dog of the North. I had no idea that the author of Kazan and Baree, Son of Kazan had written it. Wonderful book, wonderful story, with an ending that tied it all up in a perfect bow. Sitting here with a few happy tears, actually.
I have read a number of Mr. Curwood's books. In this effort he paints a picture so clearly that you feel that you are back to that time and place. Truely this is a great work that is on the level of Hemmingway. A treasure for those of you out there that never get tired of adventure and life.
I am a sucker for novels like this - the adventures of mongrel pup and a grizzly cub who fall out of a canoe tied together and become life long friends. The dog, Miki, is fabulous. Tough, smart, strong. The adventures are wonderful. Several evil characters who get it in the end. Really fun.
Absolutely fabulous book! All the stories swallowed me completely. Brave and sincere animals, gorgeous nature and great talent of the author made this book amazing. BRAVO!
This is book is over 100.years old (my copy literally fell apart as I read it, and I had to find the per online for the last page) and of course is dated in many ways (I dont know that I've seen the word "tarbaby" used outside of song of the south, and there were many terms like "within an ace" that i'd never heard of and had to look up). It's likely not realistic in many details, and there are violent scenes between animals and humans . But overall in theme and characters it was a heart-warming and unique story.
I see this author also wrote the bear which I believe was made into a movie. This book is also mostly from the point of view of a bear as well as a dog. There are human thoughts, but they're not the main characters really.
I don't think most authors are able to write a story like this from an animals perspective. There have been a few like black beauty and A Dog's Purpose. The first few chapters describing Neewa's discovery of the world were so vivid and I could see it like a movie. The descriptions of the owls was truly terrifying and gave me physical chills. And the forest fire gave shades of war and unimaginable destruction. When Miki goes to the gathering for the fight I was actually reminded of the scenes from apocalypto where the outsider is brought into the alien world that cannot be understood and witnesses horrors that will change him forever. Miki never saw that many people in his life again most likely. The contrast between the world of the forest and the gathering of people and dogs is so stark and mind-blowing thinking about Miki trying to process thatm
Curwood postanowił jednak połączyć przyjaźnią małego niedźwiedzia Niua i szczeniaka Miki.
Książka "Włóczęgi Północy" zawiera wszystkie zalety poprzednich, przede wszystkim wspaniałe wyczucie natury i jej piękne przedstawienie.
Its a great read for teens or even children and their parents. Its full of innocent imagery of nature and animals which allows for a bond to form with nature early in life.
The main characters are a bear and a wolf dog who are friends and go through many perils together. Overall the story talks about family and the importance of a family circle, the lack of support, the need of feeling safe and belonging. It was a kind story and recommend it as an early read.
This book had me howling. Parts were delightfully funny. The wicked parts were jugular-ripping crazy. I love the use of the word cataract for waterfall. I had to look it up. I could almost feel the difference between cold with sunshine and cold with death near. Curwoods abrupt happy ever after endings delight me. The Nomads of the North ending did not disappoint. A cheerier ending is not possible.
A solid story, as per Curwood’s normal, but instead of being focused on people it’s the story of a bear and a dog. I had a hard time with the violence given the subject matter of animals in the wild, but I did enjoy the info about the frontier animal life and I liked the ending.
Absolutely loved this book. ❤ A wonderful tale about a dog and a bear, parts of the story were sad but good wins at the end. Thought provoking book written in 1919 about a time that's gone.
Smutek, radość, brutalność, czułość i przyjaźń - cały wachlarz emocji
This is a must-read for nature lovers, grown-ups and teenagers alike. It offers a glimpse into a short historical window where tough men and women were exposed to nature after their primordial link had been severed by millennia of civilization. On par with the best Jack London. Its lyrical descriptions of grand nature transport you to the boreal forests. The raw account of life in the wild is offset with humor. Animals are the real protagonists, their fates intertwined with the humans who encroach on their territory. It's poles apart from the Disney-esque infantilized narratives featuring animals.
