I got this book as an introduction to Africa. As a student of history this was an area I really didn’t know much about. Some may blame this on a racist upbringing or a Eurocentric focused education and there may be some truth to that. My hope was this book would provide a general introduction where I could spread out to other areas of African history that was interesting to me. This book didn’t do it. If anything, it’s broad declarations of African scientific, religious and civil development equivalency with Europe and Asia fell very flat. In some cases the evidence he presented was so weak and unsubstantiated it pretty much proved his counterpoint. So I am very disappointed with the book. On the bright side I feel that I did get a broad brush description of African history and there were some highlights. So my quest to learn more continues.
