This novella really is best described as a "furry fable." It was a lovely, fast read. It was so innocent and vivid, yet packed full of paranormal teenage angst. Very quickly, it sweeps you away into this charming urban fantasy.
Cydney Ella "Cinderella" met the boy of her dreams at 14. Jack is the prince of the kingdom, sneaking out to spend time with Cinderella but hiding his identity. Usually everyone knows he is Prince Remy, and he is treated differently, coddled. He had found simple human moments with Cinderella. However, their first kiss sends her over the edge, and unlocks the wolf she knew was waiting within her...
Take the very, very basic story line from Cinderella, and morph Cinderella into a werewolf, and the prince into a vampire. It takes the heart of the story and breathes new life and twists into the old tale. Despite it's shorter length, the world, the supernatural creatures, the characters - are all well explored and Veronica Blade's exquisite descriptive detail paints a world using every color in the box. Even the secondary characters are well established, and surprise the reader by revealing their true depth of their personality and emotions.
While it is vivid and enthralling, there were times I had wished there were more. While it may have been over more quickly than I wanted, it really brought a sense of "cleansing my reading pallet." It was just so sweet, it's nearly impossible to not be won over by the two characters, Cydny and Remy (Jack). It is a perfect novella to slip in between books to help clear the cobwebs that bad books can leave in your mind, or even just to help rejuvenate your faith in innocent yet attractive YA stories.
Overall, it is a light, witty, teen angst, supernatural angst love story... with fur, and fangs. I highly recommend a read to anyone!

A short tale full of fun-that's what this novella is like!
A few thoughts:
there was no meeting and instantly falling in love.
I loved that Cindy was the werewolf.
Yes, Cindy worried a tad too much about controlling her furry side but I liked that she behaved like any teenager would.
Remy too wasn't just a lovestruck teenager, he comes to realize his responsibilities as he grows up.
I liked how Cindy's aunt loved her and yet was scared of her at times.
And of course, the English vampire was my favorite amongst all the characters.

Have you ever asked… What if Cinderella was a werewolf and the Prince was a Vampire? What if the evil stepsisters and stepmother were in fact not evil?
Don’t feel bad if you haven’t; I never have either. However, the thoughts didn’t escape Veronica Blade. She managed to take the classic tale of Cinderella, bring it into the twenty-first century, and toss a paranormal twist with the added bonus of mixture of all my favorite sup characters that left me begging for the story to continue.
How did I come across this gem, you ask? I was looking for something fun to share with daughter and boy did I hit the Jack (pun intended) pot.
The original story of Cinderella is told from a third person POV but I love the fact that Blade tells the story not from the outside looking in but from both Cydney and Remy’s POV. Blade’s paranormal Cinderella retelling follows along the lines of the original tale touched by Blade’s magic. It truly is a fantastic read and I would recommend it anyone who enjoys the classics with a modern paranormal twist.

She's done it again! No matter what genre she chooses, whether it's a fairy tale retelling or a witchy war, Veronica Blade knows how to bring it! A Bite's Tale was a quick, easy read, with romance, action, and teen angst in spades!

When Cydney Ella and Prince Remy meet in the woods when they are young, neither one wants to admit who they really are, so they call each other "Cinderella" and "Jack." They only have summers together on Ile de la Paix (Island of Peace), which is an island where supernaturals live openly. Just because it's called the Island of Peace, though, doesn't mean all of the groups get along ALL the time. When Cydney reaches puberty her werewolf side comes out, and in a moment of intimacy with Jack (she's 14 and he's 15 and they are sharing their first kiss), she accidentally bites him! Her mother takes her from the island back home to Florida, where they stay for good because she doesn't want Cydney to be arrested for biting a boy. What they don't know is that Jack is actually Prince Remy, who had a bad heart and wasn't too healthy to begin with! Lucky for Remy, his father, the King's, adviser is a centuries old vampire who turns him after he gets bit. Prince Remy never stops trying to find his Cinderella, without any luck. When he reaches 18, the King decides it would be best for political reasons that Remy marry, so he plans a ball where all of the eligible girls have to show and Remy has to choose a wife. Remy is not too happy with this, but goes along with it in the hopes that he will finally see Cindy again.
Meanwhile, Cydney's mother dies and she and her little brother have to go back to the island to live with their aunt. Cydney has never forgiven herself for losing control and biting Jack, and out and out refuses to go to the ball out of fear that she will get worked up and bite someone again. I was very curious to see how Veronica would work the whole "going to the ball-fairy godmother" aspect into the story, and I wasn't disappointed! It worked out great and was actually a lot of fun!
This was a really fun book with great characters and a great take on an old fairy tale. I can definitely recommend it to all fans of fairy tale retellings :)

Veronica has done it again! She has created a tale that has everything in it from love to heart break to happiness. The story flows so smoothly I stayed up till 3:30am in the morning finishing the book. I needed to know what happened.
This is a story of young love and if it can stand the test of time. Cinderella meets Jack every summer in the woods where they talk and share the summer. They look forward to every year spending the summer together. Only one summer Cinderella feels her body changing and when she meets Jack this time he is determined to tell her a secret. When they reach their special spot Jack is so over taken by these strong emotions that he kisses Cinderella and something happens to her. Cinderella doesn't know what is going on but she knows she must run away from Jack before she hurts him.
After running home and telling her mother what happened Cinderella is sent home with the intentions of never returning to the island. Jack is rescued and at home recuperating. Jack is worried for Cinderella and wants to know what happened to her but he has no idea what happened to her. While Jack is thinking about her she is thinking about him. She is wondering if she killed him by accident.
Fast forward three years and something has happened to Cinderella and she has to move back to the island. She wonders what happened to her Jack and looks for him everywhere she goes. Then at school there is an announcement that the king is holding a ball for his son the prince to find a wife. Every girl over eighteen must attend this ball but Cinderella does not want to because she doesn't like the king and his family. She will soon learn that she has no choice but to go. What is a girl to do? Why is it so important to go to this ball? Will she see Jack again? Will he remember her? In the end will she find happiness?
This is a paranormal MUST READ! You will not be able to put it down. This story will capture you and you will be rooting for Team Jack or Remy.......

What a great read! I was completely unable to put this book down, definitely a page turner. I happen to love twists on fairy tales, and this twist on Cinderella is no exception. Veronica Blade has written an amazing novella!
The story is shown from both Remy and Cydney's POVs. The reader just can't help but feel bad for the two of them. they were great friends, completely in love, and then Cydney accidentally bites Remy and they are torn apart, Cydney not even knowing if her friend is still alive. Three years later and Cydney is sent back to live close to where she bit her love, and since then has never allowed herself to get close to anyone again for fear of losing control and hurting them. Then a ball comes up at the castle, the King is forcing the Prince to choose a bride. Cydney doesn't want to go, but all of the eligible girls who will be turning 18 in the next 6 months are being requested to attend, or in Cydney's case, forced. Cydney doesn't realise that Prince Remy is Jack, the boy she bit three years ago. Will they recognize each other at the ball? You'll just have to read to find out what happens.
I found this to be a cute little love story that was extremely enjoyable to read. It's a nice mix in the paranormal world to have a werewolf and vampire falling for each other. I was a little sad when I finished the book, since it was over and would definitely recommend this book. It's a great, light read for a rainy day.

A great remake of Cinderella. I couldn't stop reading once I started, so thankfully it wasn't too long or I'm sure I would have zero sleep. I have been itching for a supernatural retelling of this particular fairy tale (well, this and Romeo and Juliet, but I haven't any doubt that will be next). I loved the action and the romance! But the part I loved the most was that "Cinderella" was loved by her family instead of shunned and abused. That made the story so much better to me. I kept waiting for Beatrice to be mean but any hurtful thing she said to Cydney was always justified. Given, she didn't have to say it so bluntly, but it was still stuff that needed to be said. I wish there was more to this story because it was just so alluring. Really liking your work Veronica Blade :)

Ok. Let me just start by saying I love the title! Telling people I am reading a "Furry Fable" was great to see the look on their faces.
I wonder if more of these Fables are to come?
Anyhow... to the story itself.
The introduction to the two main characters in the story was a good pace, I loved the illusions / link to classic stories that I felt were hinted at with their chosen pseudonyms.. "Cinderella" and "Jack" respectively. Even though her chosen name was very close to her real name, and was actually something her younger brother used to call her.
I'm not sure whether this is a one off book, or more are to come. During the story pieces of information were dropped in, which I thought - "aha" - sequel. Then apparently answered later on, such as where Cyd mentions what happened to her Dad, and why her mum moved away.
Overall, I found this story enjoyable. The ending though seemed a bit too quick to wrap up the story. They get attacked, she protects, they caught the bad guys and know who was leading the threat. I thought that this piece was a bit bland and not really part of the threat in the story - I figured with it being from the same type of creature as Cyd is that it would have been another obstacle or that they would have wanted her to be a spy or something for them.
Them "finding" each other was nice, and although I applaud the whole "no I'm not marrying we are too young" I felt that was quite insulting to this bond that they share, and left me feeling like "what on earth.. all that for "great be my girlfriend" ending.
I liked the way the relationship with Cyd and her Aunt ended at the end, but I would have liked to see more interaction where at the time you agree with Cyd, but then at the end have that "oh" moment and when you look back see how you were also mistaken.
To describe the flow of the story, I would say its a nicely paced story with only a bumps of action in the road that dont last long. It won't have you on the edge of your seat, you will find yourself pleasantly smiling whilst reading it. The characters were well written and likable which is always a good thing! I like the twist of the story combining a whole "Cinderella" story with lots more hair and much more modern.
Overall, I liked this story and will read it again and again no doubt. I will be reading more by the same author. If there was a sequel or short story featuring these characters - I'll be first in line to see what they are up to next!

Fairy tale brought to modern world, how much do I love that! (In case you wonder, very much! I just watched A Cinderella story, Another Cinderella story and A Cinderella Story: Once upon a song)
This really isn't an ordinary Cinderella story. Cinderella is a werewolf. After a little accident, Prince is a vampire. Cinderella's cousins are the "two evil stepsisters", but it's a refreshing change to see that they're not that evil (though kind of mean and inconsiderate in occasions). And the "evil stepmother" isn't evil, either.
The story begins with Cinderella and Prince just hanging out. They don't use their real names, but that doesn't stop them from liking each other. Then Cinderella turns into werewolf for the first time, and that's when their paths separate.
Until years later, when it's time for the ball.
I just loved this story! There's romance, humor and happily ever afters, which I can't resist. I just have to quote few LOL- moments!
Well, I could put her in a container -- parts of her anyway.
But that would be gross.
I scrunched up my face. "Let's just say I hope you like guys who howl at the moon." "No, I don't", she hissed.
...
"Oh, c'mon. Could you really date a guy who gets that hairy? I bet they shed too, which means I could never wear black.
Either that or I'd go broke buying lint removers."
Everything was fluent, and even though you expect to know how the story goes, there's few surprises. This reminded me of my favorites, Hex Hall and Paranormalcy.
Just like them, I couldn't stop reading until I was finished. Which was too soon, since this was a novella. I just wanted to keep on reading, so another 155 pages would've been nice! So that's a small minus. There's no more down sides, though Cinderella might have been a little too whiny occasionally.
But maybe it's understandable, since she attacked a boy she loves and doesn't trust herself.
As said, I could have read another 155 pages, and would love to see more of Cinderella and Prince.

As said, I could have read another 155 pages, and would love to see more of Cinderella and Prince.

As a reader who's not a big fan of the YA genre (except for a few titles) there was just something about this book that called to me. From its likable characters to its unique spin on the Cinderella story I was drawn into an intriguing world where paranormal creatures have an island/country where they can live in peace. With its nice combination of romance, political intrigue, and action I can see a long life full of stories based in this world.
The love between a prince and a werewolf starts innocently enough with clandestine meetings every summer with neither sharing their real names. As time goes by and their teenage hormones kick in, one life altering kiss has consequences neither anticipated. Since that event, Cydney doesn't trust that she can control her shift and fears for the safety of those she loves which has led to her cutting herself off from living life to the fullest. I admired Cydney and found her reactions to the event to be realistic. Her actions and dialogue were believable for a teenager and her emotions swayed from putting up a tough facade to doubting everything about herself.
Remy too was likable and the connection between them was soul deep and sweet as sugar with a nice bit of heat as they've gotten older. The event that pulled them apart changed his life forever but he never forgot the red headed girl of his dreams. When they finally reunite at the Ball it's like no time has passed as they immediately fell back into their own private world. Remy's under a lot of pressure to learn how to be King but with Cydney those worries vanish. Their scenes together were sweet, romantic, and made my heart ache.
The secondary characters were memorable with each of them being reminiscent of those in the fable but much nicer. There's no wicked stepmother or stepsisters in this story. Along with an entertaining cast of characters is a nice bit of action to bring the story to its conclusion. A conclusion that's a little too easily wrapped up with a villain who's a bit too obvious.
This was a fast and pleasant read that appealed to me for many reasons. The world Ms. Blade created is an intriguing one ripe with even more possibilities. Knowing what this author is capable of makes me excited for her future works and gives me another good reason to read YA.

Veronica Blade gives us a clever retelling of the Cinderella story using a young girl (Cydney) who also happens to be a werewolf as her main character. She also populates her fairly tale world with warlocks, witches, vampires and very accommodating humans who take all these paranormal inhabitants in stride! As the story goes, Cydney meets and begins to fall in love with a boy named Jack (actually Remy the crown prince in disguise). But just as their relationship progresses from friendship to something more, Cydney hits puberty which for a wolf means shifting to wolf form with ofttimes deadly results. In this case, Cydney bites and almost kills Jack. A few years lapse and we find our heroine now motherless and coping as best as she can with her overwhelming fear that she will never be able to control her wolf. Losing control is not an option for her, so when everyone else is getting ready to be presented to the prince at the ball, Cydney stays home. And you know the rest of the fairytale...but now you must imagine a prince who has been turned into a vampire, wolves attempting an assassination and Cinderella morphing into a wolf during the ball...and you have a glimpse into the fun ride that A Bite's Tale promises to take you on.
While this is a short novella,, it packs a lot into it's slender form. The sweet romance between Cydney and Remy (or Jack as the prince in disguise is first called) is well done with just a bit of heat but PG enough for any YA audience.
Perhaps my only criticism lies in the editing. At times, it was difficult to decipher who was speaking--often dialogue came right on top of a short prose section and with out a he said, she said marker it took a moment to figure out who had spoken. And while I enjoyed the fairly constant POV changes from Remy to Cydney, the time gaps and lack of detail in the supporting characters left a bit to be desired. But these criticisms pale in contrast to the book's strengths which include a well thought out storyline, very likeable characters and a most interesting twist in the reworking of a classic fairytale.

Excellent, sweet and irresistable romantic fantasy!
Cydney meets a boy, Remy, while she visits her aunt's house. They do not wish to share their identity, so they call themselves Cinderella and Jack. In three summers that Cydney met him, they began to fall in love with each other. That was the stage, when Cydney's werewolf father's gene became dormant. When Cydney received her first kiss from Remy, due to excitement, Cydney morphed into a wolf and bit Remy without control. Cydney left Remy and ran in her wolf form. But, after some time, when she came to her senses, she feels terrible and goes in search of Remy, but, Remy was gone..no trace anywhere.
Cydney was afraid that she had killed the only boy she loved, and started shying away from society. Her mom takes her back to their place and she never came back again.....until her mom died three years later. Now, she lives with her aunt, still worried about losing her control and living in guilt for what she had done to Remy (or her Jack). What she doesn't know a lot.. The boy Cydney bit, is still alive, and is also the King's only son. And yeah, he was changed to a vampire, in order to save him from dying from her bite. And one more thing, that hot guy is getting married soon. A werewolf Cinderella meets vampire prince! Wait, actually, will they meet?
Now, if you are still not interested to read this novel after this, we won't get along! :)

There is no ugly step-sisters here..actually, I liked Cydney's sisters and one little brother in this book. This, without a doubt, is the most happy and likeable read for me in this month. The characters are not deep, but this is right for a short novel. There is humor, adventure, action, romance and the most important of all - 'happily ever after'. Its a satisfying read!
If you are into fairy-tales or fairy-tale retellings, then you should not wait another second to pick up this book. I am sure you would enjoy this as much as I do.

This book is absolutely the best twist on a fairy tale I have read! The story was fun, quick read. It was the Cinderella story being retold with enough twists and originality that it kept me entertained. The characters in this short story were so very well developed, each with their own unique personality.
Cydney is a young werewolf struggling to keep herself under control. Her biggest fear is hurting someone she loves. She knows how much this hurts, as it has happened before.
Remy is a prince who happens to be a vampire. He is longing for his one true love, who seemingly is lost forever. When his father tries to force him to marry, Remy is determined once and for all to find his lost love.
I love the author's take on the different supernatural creatures. Even in this short story each of the creatures are given distinct characteristics. I love that the author gave us details like these rather than just skimming over them. I also enjoyed reading the story from the points of view of both Cydney and Remy. Both are likeable characters, and it is fun knowing what both of them are thinking and feeling throughout the story.
This was a novella, and the ending was almost wrapped up and resolved too quickly. I would have loved to see this as a longer book and have more play to the reunion and the fight scene. Overall, I immensely enjoyed this story and would recommend it to everyone!

More seriously, this book is about a romance that's cute to read about. I like both characters - Cydney and Remy - that make us discover alternatively their inner voice. The story is like a fairy tale but modern that, somehow, speaks more to us.
It's good for once to read a book in which the characters are looking for each other after they lost touch. They can't forget each other.
Cydney has got her flaws, her fears that make her believeable and Remy is the perfect Prince charming with his undying love and his growing interest for his kingdom.
This book is the perfect read to recall us why we loved so much fairy tales in our childhood.
The only negative thing that I could write here is that it's too short! I would have loved to read a little more about this threat that's, maybe, too "easily" resolved. A little more descriptions at the end and more tension would have made this book perfect.
Of course, it's my opinion and I can be a little perfectionist sometimes.

April 3, 2012I am always a sucker for fairytale retellings and A Bite’s Tale was no exception. A Bite’s Tale is a Cinderella retelling. It was really good and had a unique spin on it in two ways.
One, “Cinderella” is a werewolf and the Prince is a vampire. This was quite well done and I thought it was pretty awesome how that melded into the story and how the vampires and werewolves interacted with each other in the story.
Two, the step-sisters are not at all wicked. They were so lovely that I would have loved to have spent time with them.
There were a couple of other unique little twists that were really awesome but I don’t want to give them away as that would give away a large majority of the plot and well, not many people appreciate that for sure.
The story itself was highly entertaining and it’s quite short and easy to read so you just fly through the pages. Fans of fairytale retellings will absolutely adore this book.
Overall, I thought A Bite’s Tale was a pleasant read and I enjoyed sitting down for a few hours and reading it. The book had a little bit of an addictive quality to it as I just wanted to keep reading to find out what happened next. I would highly recommend this one as it is rather enjoyable.

I have been given the privilage of reading all of Veronica's books she has released so far for review, and she has yet to disappoint me! I loved this book, a very enchanting new take on Cinderella, clad with vampire's, werewolves and sorcerer's! I wanted more when i finished it. The character's were very likable, and it always kept me wanting to know what was gonna happen next. The story is written in alternating perspectives between the 2 main character's which made you root for them that much more. Anyone who loves a good paranormal love story or fairytales retold will devour this book, and if that isn't your usual genre read it anyway! LOL. I look forward to what Veronica will do next as she has become one of my favorite author's. Great book!

This is a fun tale about a girl who meets a boy and they decide to exchange fake names so they can escape their real lives. She calls herself Cinderella and he calls himself Jack. Every summer, she goes on vacation with her family and meets up with Jack, who's a resident on the eerie island, and each time their relationship grows. When Jack finally works up the nerve for their first kiss, Cinderella's true identity explodes (literally) and her world is turned upside down. She has to find a way to clean up the mess she's made, but how can she do that when she doesn't even know Jack's true identity? Even a furry fairy tale has its happy ending (thank goodness!) and it's an enjoyable read to get there.
Veronica Blade has a fresh voice with lots of humor along the way. Can't wait until her next release!

Well, let me say, thank you Making Connections, and the author for giving me a copy to read for my review! I need to say, this book is TOO CUTE!!! Cydney, aka Cinderella, visits over seas ever summer in (I think) England area... there she meets Jack (who happens to be the prince named Remy)... and hence the Cinderella story... They both wanna pretend they are someone else when they are together, so after a horrible accident, Cydney loses it, and Remy is depressed...
This is a short story, so I don't wanna give away too much, but I gotta say, this was so cute, and I was cheering for these two, and I read it so quick... So, I will say, excellent, especially if you like the fairy tale endings :) It's just awesome!

This was a fun and cute retelling of the classic fairy tale. The paranormal twist gave this well known story a fun new premise and life. Cyndey is a good, quirky character realistically dealing with the problems in her life. Remi is a fun, more filled out version of the prince's character. Their romance is sweet and fun. The classic side characters are well done and finish off the tale. I did feel that the end was rushed and could have been built up a little more to give it a good background and more meat to the story. But it was good for a short read and definitely made you smile and cheer just as you once did for the Disney version as a kid. I would recommend this one.

Ms. Blade has done it again! A Bite's Tales is a unique twist on Cinderella meets paranormal meets Jane Austen. I am a sucker for young first love. This is a sweet story that captivated and entranced me from the get go. I polished this off in one sitting and have a hankering to read it again. Cydeny and Remy's story has stayed with me and I find myself thinking of it often. I think it would be cool to see Cydeny's cousins stories and see them have a happy ever after. I know my daughter who is twelve would love this story as well. Ms. Blade is a talented author with a wide range of stories that will have you coming back for more. I am eager for more from Ms. Blade as I have not read a book by her that I have not loved.

This was a fun twist to the Cinderella story of old. Prince charming is a vampire. Cinderella is a werewolf. Of course there is a ball and that is where they will hook up - - - but the last time they saw each other she bit him! I enjoyed the read very much. The characters are nicely developed and easy to invest in. Dunstan, the king's advisor, is my favorite character; I found myself seeing people I know in him. The author has set her characters in a world where paranormal is normal and humans are the "odd man out" so to speak.
Well written, entertaining, and worth the read for certain.
I wish the story had been longer and am hoping to see more from Veronica Blade.

I would love to thank Veronica Blade for this free signed copy of A Bite's Tale (A Furry Fable)that i won in the the giveaway. A Bite's Tale held me captive and i could not put it down. i love love this story i dont want to put any spoilers in this review but i will say this it is a must read and that you can not pass up this book. I look forward to reading other books by Veronica Blade. She is truly a talented author.

A short fun read. Corny to a fault. And the characters were idiots. But adorkable idiots so I could live with that. I mean really what else could a love story between werewolf Cinderella and Vampire Prince Charming be? But the best part?
Fairy godmother was a vampire. A male vampire at that. And British to boot.Oh, how I loved it.
Not amazing but not brain-crippling either and complete fun.

This is definitely a very creative and fun take on a version of Cinderella . If you think you have an idea what this story is about think again. You are in for a surprise. Vampires and werewolves weave themselves into this modern tale but they seem as though they have always been part of it. A good sense of humor and a love story make this a good young adult choice.

A Bite's Tale is an inventive take on the Cinderella story. I loved Cydney as the conflicted werewolf cinderella who really doesn't want to go to the ball. Remy is a hero to fall in love with, gallant and totally hung up on his girl...er wolf. The characters are engaging and the scenes between the hero and heroine are sweetly romantic.

This book is pure candy. It was a short but very enjoyable read. It's a modern, paranormal take on the classic tale of Cinderella. I love Cydney & Remy. A werewolf and a vampire, what more could you want? I would recommend this to anyone who wants to read a YA love story with a paranormal twist! Be prepared to feel giddy inside!

Wow, this book really goes to show you that it’s not about the length of a book, but about its substance. What Stephanie Meyer did in four books, Veronica Blade managed to write an even better supernatural romance, in just 165 pages. A Bite's Tale is just simply adorable, and I can’t wait to check out anything else she puts out there! :)

Aww, such a cute story! I love the traditional Cinderella story with the modern twist of vampires and werewolves (and other magical/mythical creatures). Wonderful new take on a known fairytale. You should DEFINITELY read this.

This was a fantastic book! A very well played version on Cinderella which happens to be one of my all time favorite fairytales. Definitely worth the read!
