Brook Lynn McKay-Mulder has always craved love from a man. Except, that’s the opposite that she receives from her husband, Martin Mulder. McKay and Mulder brewery is the most successful black owned brewery in the country. Brook and Martin’s marriage was arranged before both of them were in diapers. Brook has everything that she could ever want, except the love that she desires. One drunken night after her best friend’s bachelorette party, Brook accidentally gets into the wrong Uber. Instead of getting out, the passenger allows her to add her address onto his ride. A cool conversation and physical attraction is what keeps Brook thinking about the stranger, well after she has exited his Uber. It isn’t until a few days later when she walks into a meeting with her husband and realizes the man in the Uber is responsible for designing her happy home with her husband. October Platinum, the nephew of West Platinum, is an award-winning architect famous for his designs across the world. A single father and freshly divorced, October is looking for true love. After meeting the beautiful Brook Lynn McKay, he’s wondering if he has two occasions to design his way into her heart.
I honestly wanted to like this more but Brook Lynn having exactly zero agency for 90% of the book was frustrating and for a good portion of the book she didn’t even want any and I could not fathom it. To be “complacent” still after what happened to Noah was insane to me. I also would have like more development into the relationship between her and October. It was too fast and the feelings didn’t seem as deep as they were meant to for me. Probably because Brook Lynn refused to participate in her own dame life.
This was a very unconventional contemporary romance love story but it worked. I was rooting for October and Brooke, but her still being in that hot mess marriage,I wanted her first to get out. But Marcus was getting his so, whatever! I'm happy it work all out in the end. I was also happy to read a slight update of Happy Galleria and the Pilot.
So my bookclub is very good at blindly choosing the bad books. We general try to pick messy sounding books because it gives us a lot to laugh about but this one was something else.
I went into it with an open mind and was slapped with stuff I know would trigger people. So there were no content warnings off top so I feel it's my duty to say if baby death is a trigger, don't read this.
The story is about a married couple who hate each other but somehow still stayed together for 10 years even though the husband is a serial cheater and the wife just doesn't have a spine. When she finally does sort of grow one it's with a questionable MC who was okay with sleeping with married women but also wasn't the type to get involved with married women? There was no chemistry or redeeming qualities with these two characters and the author focused heavily on side relationships like their parents and other friends who were also serial cheaters. This books also suffers from children being written in a story but not really part of the story.
I had a hard time, well I guess I stopped trying to suspend my belief because it was just a terrible read.
Do not recommend.

Brooke went the arrange marriage and love less marriage trying to please her parents and family. Brooke went the loss of her son Noah having and to loss him 6months later due to het husband drunk driving. Brooke meets October Platinum drunken night in a Ober with a stranger. She meet October Platinum again the rich and humble architect businessman to build her and her husband dream home. It was a instant attraction to a patient and loving gentleman and so fine. October Platinum builds het up to know her worth and stand on her independent women stand. Martin her soon to be ex-husband cheated on her with multiple women. And moved his daughter and mistress into their home from college Gina Jackson. Brooke parents disowned because she refused to let them controlled her life any longer and discovered her father cheating on her mother.
Oh so the MFC is classist right off the bat. Got it.
Martin, is a certified, grade A asshole
Gina and her daughter staying with the Mulder’s is weird. I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s later revealed that Jade is Martin’s daughter. I’m almost certain that Gina and Martin are intimate. Brook needs to woman up and put her foot down.
If Deja is serious about this man, why isn’t he taking her to the airport. I’m not feeling Deja and October’s dynamic. Especially if they are like it’s not changing if they start seriously dating other people.
October sounds dumb. How does he have more to lose when he’s single and dating other people. Brook Lynn is the married heiress
This was an ok read but I felt the love these two claim to have was rush, didn’t seem organic to me. Also, there was some unresolved items for me. Still worth giving it a read.
This is a story about craving love in all the wrong places and finding it where you least expect. What pulled me in most was how layered the relationships were. Brook’s longing felt raw, and October’s quiet strength made me root for their connection, a man who sees her in a way her husband never could, even as the lines blurred between loyalty, desire, and choice. Jahquel J. gave us more than a love story here. It’s about what happens when the life you built starts to feel like a cage and the risk of stepping into something new could finally set you free. A bold and tender romance that lingers, asking how many occasions we really get to choose love.
What a wonderful short read!!!...You never truly know the purpose of a person in your life!!!...It was sooooo good to see a mother in law stand in for someone that marries their child and hold that child accountable!!!... I love that October stood won what he was about and he meant!!!... Brook needed to believe in herself and I was glad ahe finally started the process!!!...With her mother in law, Sam and October with her, she will definitely grow!!!...Her husband was trifling for bringing his side chick and their child into their home!!!...
I loved this book it was everything from the beginning to the end. I am so happy that my girl Brook got her happy ending. Her and October were definitely meant to be no lie. They were a great couple and I loved them together. Martian didn’t deserve her though. I can’t wait to see what you have coming next.
We can choose our journey or path in life love whoever we choose while knowing our self worth. Our parents shouldn’t choose to mold us into who they want us to be or tell us who to love.
Not acknowledging our self worth can cause us to going into depression or killing ourselves. Choose yourself every time.
I love a really good love story with a little drama and Jahquel definitely knows how to give you one. I knew it was more to him and Gina than he put on, who let's a female friend with a child move in the house with him and his wife and give her a car and builds her a house! I was so glad when she caught them!!! Loved it!!!
I realized that Brook Lynn had to come into her own but man was she was she weak. To make it worse, when she did finally decided to stand up for herself the person she gets snappy with is October. Now Martin has been dogging her the whole time but then she wanted to get rah-rah with October.
Jah books are always so refreshing to read. The storylines, the details, the characters, etc make it hard to put the book down so it’s always a page turner for me. This book is no exception. Read it!!!
I'm not saying this is a little different than what you usually do However I wish it would more in depth I definitely thought the ending would be a lot longer
I enjoyed this read and these characters. The storyline was goid and had so many messages. The growth of the female character was much needed and this author handled it so well in this book. This is definitely a five star read.
Loved it. Martin was a dirty dog. And so was Brooke's parents. I'm so glad that she met October, I would love to see how things turned out as far the divorce. This was a good book.
I’m giving this five stars because it was an amazing book! I could definitely go for a part two of them though. Just to see if Brook & October had those three babies & how her divorce played out!
Mama McKay is crazy for wanting her child to suffer like she is ! ! ! Gina lucky all she got was a slap ! ! ! I knew Jade was Martin’s daughter ! ! ! October came in a gave Brook everything she deserved ! ! !
I enjoyed October and Brook Lynn story for the most part, the arranged marriage got on my nerve. I didn’t care for Brook husband once he let Gina move and them parents full of s***
I love, love, love this so emotional and suspenseful dramatic read. October seemed too good to be true, and Brook Lynn eas a loss cause married to a sorry brute of a man. You'll love this standalone. I guarantee it.
My only complaint would be I wish it wasn't a standalone. I wanted a part 2 to see Martin's reaction to bossed up Brook . I loved her and October's relationship. Glad he provided everything she was missing.
This book has arranged marriage, adultery, fate and destiny. It’s an emotional roller that pulls you in and captures you until the end. If you missed on this one, don’t… grab it and dive in.
I absolutely loved this book! The formation of October and Brook Lynn's relationship was beautiful. The way Brook flourished despite a crazy ass husband was amazing! I will definitely be indulging in more books by Jahquel J.!!!!!
This was a cute short read. Brook Lynn deserves happiness. I wish her husband fall from grace was discussed more and I would’ve loved a epilogue with brook becoming a platinum and having those babies
The entire story was predictable and the plot moved too slowly. I also felt like the ending felt unfinished. Maybe the author is trying to leave room for a sequel.
