Delve into the game’s stunning artistic development with this 208-page art book, which catalogues countless pieces, from early concepts to final 3D renderings.
The artbook is great by its own, but I really missed reading notes about the pictures. It has great, great images but it just lacks author's notes or stuff like that, it's great to know what the developers think, but this artbook just lack of those type of notations.
This came along with my collector's edition of Diablo 3, purchased closed to 11 years ago. Diving back into it after all these years was a jolt of nostalgia and a reminder of the immense amount of work that went into the conceptualisation of this iconic RPG. The art is equal parts beautiful, dark and gothic. The demons grotesque and horrific. The characters and locales gorgeous and unique. The only thing this book really lacked is having a better structure. The cinematic portion really didn't need its own section, as it was part of their own individual acts, and it was weird seeing art for Maghda and other monsters appear in the wrong places in the book. It would have also been nice if there were more accompanying commentary (even if it was just labels) regarding each art piece.
BASIC SYNOPSIS This was the art book that was included with the collector's edition of Diablo 3 pc game. It contains mostly concept art of characters and environments in the game. All different kinds of media, from pencil and ink sketches to full paintings.
MY THOUGHTS The talent of these artists is enviable. The sheer amount of hours they must have put in to get to these levels is inspiring. Much respect. I could do without the game assets and even cinematics chapters, as that looked better in game. They didn't translate well to print (especially the assets which were no doubt created at low res for game optimization rather than print quality). The sketches and paintings throughout more than make up for it though.
This is the art book which came packed with the Collector's Edition of Diablo III. It's up to the level of quality with all other Blizzard art books, and is full of great concept art along with some commentary by the artists.
There is very little commentary in this book and it is all about the overall themes of a place/class/ect. There is almost no picture specific comments, and the ones that do exist were already part of the piece.
