While time unravels in ways she never thought possible, she’s forced to examine her role in history’s making. But as she quickly learns, the truth comes with a price and some secrets are better left buried.
Adelaide’s tale of twisted time will leave her asking the ultimate question—is protecting the past worth sacrificing your future?
The Timewalker Archives Vol. 1 is the first book in a young adult historical fantasy series perfect for fans of NBC’s Timeless and Alyson Noël’s Stealing Infinity.
Emily VanderBent is a natural-born storyteller. As a writer and historian, she desires to celebrate women in history. Through the The Timewalker Archives, VanderBent uses elements of history to creatively engage readers with the past. She hopes her writing will encourage young women to fearlessly pursue their passions and own the narrative of their individual story.
While living in the real world, Emily dreams of days long past and stories yet to be told.
I would like to start this review off by addressing the author directly. Girl, I think you dropped something...my jaw! The last half of the book was so easy to get through, posing questions with little answers and so much history. I would be lying if I said I didn't learn any history from this book. (History was never my strong suit)
The start was a little difficult for me to get into because it's third-person POV. The story moved rather quickly and ended unexpectedly. I loved and hated the ending at the same time. I was able to make some connections as to the twists and was pleased to find out I was right, though there are still answers I need. The second one can't come soon enough.
As far as the characters go, I enjoyed the FMC Adelaide, Teo, Kolt, and Charlie. Adelaide's drive to find out what happened to her parents is all too familiar, except this story has her traveling to the past to get answers. Teo, the dependent of Al Capone, is charming, quick-witted, and resourceful. Everything I like in tall, dark, and handsomes. Kolt and Charlie are loyal friends searching for answers of their own while trying to protect those closest to them.
BOOK CLUB READ. This book was just… fine. There were too many characters (I seriously could not keep them all straight), and something hit me in the middle of reading: what was the PLOT? Sure, Adelaide wanted to find answers, but she got into the discount TVA and just… stopped looking? It was like a wannabe hunger games or divergent, but the writing was just off. Too much happened but also nothing at all? It’s a super interesting concept, which is why I gave it 2 stars, but I don’t think it was executed well, though. And since the author is going for a Gale/Peeta love triangle, I’ll put my thoughts out there: Team Teo.

This novel is perfect for those with a thirst for historical intrigue with a touch of the fantastic. When a mysterious fire kills her parents Adelaide is determined to get answers. She will do do whatever it takes, even joining a secret society and traveling through time. With a full cast of characters with unique contributions and intricate backstories, Vanderbent weaves a story well worth the read. Highly reccomend!
Twisty and emotional time traveler YA fantasy that had me hooked from start to finish. I loved the different personalities that the author created for the characters -- and the connections to their famous ancestors. She has this mysterious plot built in with the main character buying to the this time traveling society if they promise to help her solve the mystery of her parents' death years before.
Emily kept me guessing and had a few twists I did not see coming. I really enjoyed the world she built and the balance between present day happenings and the time traveling the characters did as they tried to solve what was happening in the present by using the past.
"As someone with a love of history, she should be relishing in the fact that she was in the past, watching it unfold before her eyes. But it felt wrong. The reality of what she was seeing and experiencing was the raw, real version of history, not the sugar-coated version she had been taught."
The Timewalker Archives is a delight of a story! Adelaide Anson's life is turned upside down when he parents perish in a house fire. She loses her only family and then is abandoned by her closest friend. Adelaide's gut tells her there is something suspicious about the fire that ruined her life. When an anonymous note and invitation to a private gathering an ocean away promises to provide answers, Adelaide leaves everything she knows behind. She's swept into the secrets of the Red Rose Society, and the newest class of initiates. New faces and old unite to leave Adelaide unsettled and questioning everyone.
The Timewalker Archives is filled with lots of twists, turns, and surprises. VanderBent keeps readers on their toes throughout. I loved guessing (wrongly) where I thought the story was going, and trying to predict who Adelaide could trust. Adelaide is a fantastic character. Her determination to find out the truth about her parents, her strength under pressure, and her vulnerability is all so compelling. I love the cast of characters that surround Adelaide, and their legacies. It's such a cool aspect to the story.
I love how VanderBent wove together secret societies and time travel into such an intriguing story. The historical scenes are brought to life vividly and with obvious care to keep the time periods accurate. It's obvious there was a lot of research that went to the creation of these scenes. VanderBent even includes sources at the end of the book, which I appreciated. I love the morality question at the heart of time travel, as well as VanderBent's inclusion of women who played vital roles in history that I had never heard of before. The mystery is fantastic and the reveals at the end completely surprised me! The story ends on a cliffhanger and I'm looking forward to reading the next book.

The Timewalker Archives should be added to your TBR!
"Their stories had been cut short and brushed over, but they still deserved to be remembered."
"She held his body to the wall, leaning in to whisper in his ear like he had done to her moments before. 'I don't need saving.'"
"Who else do you go to when you want something done? The ones who marched on Versailles and started this whole revolution. The women."
"I thought the same thing but some answers are better left buried. Dig too much and the answers you find may haunt you more than the questions you started with."
"Perhaps her greatest sin of all was being a woman in a world made of men."
"The irony of mundane moments is you don't see their beauty until they only exist in memory."
"Time is a fickle thing. It easily bends but very seldom breaks."
"While she saw the value in what they were doing, what good was the ability to travel to the past and record it as it was if no one ever learned from it?"
Timewalker Archives was an absolute delight of a book to read. Much thanks to the author and R&R Book tours for providing me with a digital copy for my review.
The cover is what first drew my eye, and then the blurb got me curious. Upon opening the book and slipping into the first chapter, I was hooked. It was seriously hard to put this book down. Although, to be fair, you say “secret societies” and I will appear like a hungry raccoon demanding food.
This book had everything. A determined and capable main female character, understandable conflicts between her and her friends, an eye catching morally grey mobster, mysterious going-ons, society members that left you on edge, secrets upon secrets, questions and more - each time an answer was given, more questions came forth, a so the pages kept turning and my breathing kept quickening.
Writing style: This author is talented. She knows how to spin a tale and keep one invested. She knows how to subtly foreshadow and keep you in the dark. She knows how to be descriptive without it being too much or too little. It’s so evident from this one book that writing is deep in her blood.
Characters: There’s not a character that crossed my path as a I ventured into this world that I didn’t care for. I mean, yes the antagonist gave me the creeps and had me screaming at times, but that only means they were well, well written. Motives made sense. Relationships blossomed or burned at a pace that felt only natural. There was never a point where I felt confused by a character’s actions or words. Adelaide as the main character was a pleasure. I certainly want to dive more into her story in later installments.
Plot: Well, well paced. While it moved at a fast pace, it slid from one critical moment to the next with practiced ease that I never felt overwhelmed by how much was happening. Additionally, each scene was clearly well thought out and concisely edited to be pertinent to the overarching story or for character development.
Enjoyment: If this glowing review didn’t give it i away, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I need the next installment as of last week. Phenomenal job, Ms. Vanderbent. You’ve got a new fan in me. I’ll be watching out for more of your writing!
The Timewalker Archives is an absolute gem that captured my attention from the moment I saw its captivating cover. The blurb only piqued my curiosity further and upon reading the first chapter, I was completely swept away. The author's writing style is incredibly captivating, drawing readers in with its profound depth and keeping them invested until the very end. The way the plot unfolds is masterfully done, with a perfect balance of pacing that keeps you hooked throughout. Each scene clearly demonstrated meticulous thought and concise editing. Adelaide, the protagonist, was truly a delight to follow. The Red Rose Society, in particular, offers a complex and intricately woven narrative that leaves you craving for more. This intricate storyline delves into the fascinating concept of time travel, exploring the immense potential for both thrilling adventures and unexpected consequences. As a reader, I found myself truly immersed in this complex narrative, eagerly anticipating how it will unfold in future series. With its thought-provoking exploration of cause and effect, The Timewalker Archives promises to keep readers on the edge of their seats as they discover how events unfold in unpredictable ways. The ending left me in suspense, yearning to know what lies ahead for the characters and how their journey will unfold. I can't wait to dive back into this gripping world and uncover the thrilling results that await us in the upcoming book! If you're a fan of thrilling storytelling with exciting twists and turns, The Timewalker Archives is definitely a must-read series! Thank you RRBookTours and the author for the ARC copy
The Timewalker Archives is an omnibus edition containing the stories Crimson Time and Fractured Past.
Crimson Time: Adelaide's parents, along with the mother of her best friend, perished a year ago in a tragic fire. The police say it was an accident, but Adelaide believes otherwise. In her quest for answers, she finds herself drawn into a secret society and propelled back in time to the French Revolution.
This is the first book in the Timewalker Archives series, and wow, what a series opener! Adelaide is a knowledgeable, adventurous protagonist driven by heart. She longs for answers about her parents' deaths while wanting to help others. Even in the face of danger, she feels sorrow for strangers around her. From the moment Adelaide's home exploded, the story is steeped in tension. Throwing in time travel, a secret society, and ever shifting alliances, and this book has everything. I look forward to reading more about Adelaide soon!
Fractured Past picks up right where its predecessor ended. Adelaide takes her place in the Red Rose Society alongside her friends, both new and old. Still plagued by secrets, Adelaide takes to trying to discover the truth behind her traces, what caused the fire that killed her family, and even some new mysteries. This book was a lot heavier on the mystery aspects. There was an emphasis on both world building and characters forming relationships that made for an excellent continuation. This book ended on a cliff hanging that literally had me screaming for more!

My Review •
I have never read a book like this. I was enthralled and addicted VERY early on in the book. I could picture every page so clearly, like the scene was occurring in front of me.
About 100 pages into the book there were already twists and turns I could not have predicted. This book absolutely kept you on your toes and not being able to guess what comes next.
I will gladly admit I was always horrible with history in school, and I genuinely feel like this book taught me so much about history, and was incredibly interesting as well.
The author was incredibly well skilled with providing answers to your questions, which then led to you having more questions. It was a cat and mouse chase of trying to figure out what was going on and Emily Vanderbent absolutely kept me on my toes!
I am absolutely starting the next book “ Veiled Scars “ tonight!!!!
My Rating • 4.5/5🌟 1/5🌶️ ( tension between characters ) 0/5🩸
4.5 I was intrigued from the start with how everything went down. Like the FMC I had some questions as well. Thinking that there wasn't going to be any answers for a while it seems othereise a normal day until she receives a letter. This was when my interest was peaked more because it was a secret society. With no trace whatsoever not a clue if it's even real or not the FMC finds herself wanting to know what is this all about and if this so call society could help get the answers she is seeking. From here on out it takes us to a world of secrets and the thinking of everything comes with a price. Throughout reading this book I couldn't help but realize that there was more questions that needed answer then actually having the answers itself. The ending killed me I need to know what's going to happen next and if the results will be even worse or not.
The Timewalker Archives Vol. I is an absolutely stunning book. VanderBent's impeccable attention to historical detail, while still rendering the complexities of accessible emotions for her modern characters, is absolutely awe-inspiring. She knows how to weave a jewel-toned tapestry of rich narrative, with threads of history and fantasy depicting a much-needed story for our present time. This book really does feel like a museum exhibit that comes to life. I really appreciate the multi-faceted characters and dynamic plot. Also, I love how seamlessly VanderBent utilizes anachronisms to reveal deeper truths surrounding the story she wants to tell. I look forward to the next installment of the series!
**As a brief aside, this book could inspire an entire fashion line. There were some outfits described that I would really like to have in my closet, please and thank you.
This book had me staying up until way past the witching hour because I just couldn't put it down! It was after 1am when I finished it, but I have no regrets 😆.
I loved everything about this book -- the competition, the secret society, the time travel, the history, the mystery, the intrigue, and the budding romance. One of my favourite things about this book was getting a glimpse into women's rights and social status, as well as life in general, at the time of the French Revolution and the American Civil War.
This is a YA historical fantasy, so while there's some kissing there are no steamy scenes. But, for a YA book I found the characters quite mature, which was really nice.
There were a couple of characters I absolutely adored, namely Adelaide and Teo, and one in particular I absolutely hated, which made for a great read. I also enjoyed the rival to friends/ lovers dynamics that shone through.
This ended on a big cliffhanger, so I'm hoping the next book isn't too far away, because I need to know what happens next!

☆I recieved an ARC of this book from the author and R&R Book Tours. All thoughts are my own honest opinions.☆
I was given a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
If you loved The Last Magician or The Maze Runner, this is the book for you. Dive into an epic mystery spanning through the centuries exploring a shadowy secret society that travels in time. The stands outs of this book are without a doubt VanderBent's gorgeous historical settings and her snappy female characters. While the main character, Adelaide, is sharp and witty, I found Elise and Sienna to be the most intriguing in the large cast of characters. VanderBent has crafted a bold opening to what promises to be a wonderful series!
Oh wow…I loved this so much!!! You open the book and are immediately thrown into a world of raging fires, secret societies and time travel. With mysteries around every corner you have to put it down just to catch your breath! The immersive writing pulls you into history where you can smell the gunpowder and feel the chaos. The loss and pain Adelaide fights through only makes her strength and determination shine that much brighter. I love her friends and the slow-burn rivals to lovers was swoon worthy-and it’s just getting started! The cliffhanger ending about killed me and I CANNOT WAIT for the next book!! I absolutely recommend The TimeWalkers Archives!!!
If you start reading this and you have other things to do, then godspeed. Those things will not get done. You will not be able to put this book down. Laundry? Not today. Friends? Maybe next time. Spouse? Don't even think about it. Kids? You can use the oven, right? Sleep? You can sleep when you die. I don't make the rules. Just wanted to give you a fair warning because I didn't have one.
Anyway, all of that said I am ruined for any other book right now and am going to be forcing this book on everyone I know because I need to talk about this book and I am going to do it regardless so it's best that they read it and know what I'm talking about.
Crimson Time mixes time travel and history knowledge like fine wine. Fast-paced action scenes and smooth storytelling make Emily VanderBent's debut stand out from recently published first-time authors.
Emily is really good about pulling her readers back in even her easily distracted ones like myself. With each new page, something catches my attention. Another great book from Emily VanderBent! I was so eager to get to the end and find answers like Adelaide which is what I love about VanderBent's writing. But, man, I never would have expected the ending I read.
--- Reviews from 2020 & 2021 when the books were first published.
I'm a sucker for time travel books. I don't know what draws me in, but I love reading about it. This book has a machine and it runs on a special gem, which is interesting. The novel starts off with a mystery of solving what happened to Adelaide's parents and an invitation to the Red Rose Society. I enjoyed the plot and following Adelaide acclimate to this new world. Teo and Kolt were my other favorite side characters. I was expecting some romance to enter the plot, but there was only a slight hint. The idea of traces is also unique, and I found myself wa ting more of those chapters. As of right now, I'm not sure why there are so many about Mary. The end is a big cliffhanger.
This book is a masterpiece! It’s filled with mystery, a secret society, childhood best friend, murder mystery, time travel of course and to top it all off, it is filled with such rich history. Vanderbent not only focuses on this amazing plot, but she builds on all of our characters. Each with their own rich and intricate backstories. Our FMC is a spunky and smart woman who has a determination that could rival almost anyone, once she puts her mind to something there is no stopping her. This is a series, and I cannot wait to see what happens in the coming books.
I was very intrigued since the very start. I had an inkling of an idea that it will involve time travel but it still felt very novel to read the words and the way it was described. The way all the historical events came to life with Adelaide 's story. All the secrets and mystery of that world made the story more prominent and interesting. Even though I didn't see that end coming, I equally admire it. I can't wait to see what happens next.
The Timewalker Archives is an exciting ride! I mean you had me at secret society!! This is fast paced and Adelaide is a fantastic FMC! She's smart, stubborn, and strong! All the characters are well fleshed out and distinct. There's mystery and so many secrets!! I have so many questions!!! This reminded me of Alyson Noël's Stealing Infinity! Fantastic start to the series!! I need the next book right now - I mean that cliffhanger!!
This is one of the best books I’ve read in a very long time.
Emily Vanderbent crafts a compelling historic adventure, full of unexpected twists and turns. Not only is the story a page turner, but she’s a master of language. Her descriptions are concise yet vivid and poetic - making me feel like I was there alongside the characters.
This book should be on the New York Times Best Sellers list!
I must know more! Finding the answers has never made more curious and left me with more questions. This book is a great start to what I’m sure will be a fantastic series. On another note I haven’t ever read a historical fantasy and I can say I loved it 😍
I absolutely love this book and these characters! The plot twists and Teo and Adelaide, all of the intrigue and history. You did a fantastic job and I can't wait to read Vol. 2. I need to read Vol. 2, that ending was phenomenal but I need answers now.
This was an interesting twist on time traveling! It was a little slow at times, but I really enjoyed the story! The cliffhanger and plot twist at the end I didn’t see coming which is also a plus! Can’t wait to read the second book!
Wow, I really enjoyed reading this story. This book already became one of my favorite reads this year. This is an amazing time travel story with perfectly interwoven historical events. Adelaide and her companions journey to find the answers to their never-ending questions, the secrets about Red Rose Society, everything about this book is thrilling and entertaining. There is a spark between Teo and Adelaide, and I can't wait to see what happens between them in the future.
Until the very end, I was immersed in this story. Just like Adelaide, I have a lot of questions that I need to get answers to. I want to know more about the characters' background and how the relationship between them progress. I also loved the occasional sneek peaks on Mary's life. The ending was unexpected, and I m very much excited to read the next installment of this book. The author has done a great job.
The ending?! OMG! I'm not good with page numbers on e-readers so I thought there was still a decent amount of book left. So much drama, action, and revelations and then zilch! A cliffhanger. It's been a while since I screamed in frustration because I needed to know what happens next.
After the death of her parents in an unexplained house fire, Adelaide won't stop until she gets answers. A mysterious letter from the Red Rose Society shows up seeming to promise her the truth about what happened. Thrown into a hidden world of time travel, Adelaide must survive the French Revolution and the Civil War, to do the societies biding while trying to hide her unique abilities that are developing.
I was a huge fan of the NBC show Timeless, so when I read that this book was similar to that, I was so excited. The Timewalker Archives did not disappoint! The Red Rose Society seems so complex and there's so much that can be explored. Time travel is fascinating because if the tiniest detail changes, it can have devastating consequences for the future and things don't change the way you think they would. I'm excited to see how this plays out in the next book.
I loved the dynamics between all the characters. Everyone has their own hidden agenda and you're not quite sure who to trust. I love that Adelaide is so knowledgeable and thinks quick on her feet. She's not afraid to do what needs to be done in order to find out the truth. I really enjoyed the bonus chapters at the end with Kolt and Teo's POV. I wasn't sure of Teo at first, but he has more depth then I realized. A very enjoyable read and I eagerly await the next chapter!
Thank you to the author and R&R Book Tours for the ARC! I am leaving this review voluntarily.
The Timewalker Archives Book Review: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨(4.75)
This novel gripped me right away but often left me with more questions than answers. (Not in a bad way, but there was a lot to figure out as the story progressed). After a mysterious fire kills her parents, Adelaide needs to find answers and is willing to go to any lengths to get them.
She joins a secret society, and even time travels! I loved the historical aspect of this novel paired with the fantasy elements. The characters are unique and the pacing was perfect. I highly recommend adding this to your tbr! I can not wait to see this series continue!
