I was given an advanced copy of this book to read and review, but this in no way influences my opinions of the story: what follows is an honest - though, I admit, quite short - review based upon my opinions and nothing else.

This book is an enjoyable read; written in a straight-forward and simple style that's easy to follow, but which will capture your interest early on and keep it. The world the author has created is fascinating, and the characters are believable as real people. I look forward to reading more!

The fantasy backdrop and Native American element of the mythical Thunderbird drew my interest from the get-go. I liked hearing snippets about vampire hunter Angel from the Night School novellas and how her life and actions connected to the world of Bid’ A Ban. There is some terminology to get used to at first. I read the glossary of terms at the start of the book, but after a few pages, I became familiar with the new words anyway.

These days we’re used to vampires, werewolves and witches attending high school. Chrysalis was a lovely change of pace with Thunderkin, Fairies, other supernaturals and regular humans all attending classes together. In this world, humans know about the magical races and they live side by side, though of course not everyone is prejudice free.

Cheveyo, a dictator figure, is not content with the alliance between the races. He creates an Achina, Ayda, who has the appearance of a beautiful teenage girl. Her sole purpose in life is to eliminate Adrian, heir to the Thunderkin, but she soon finds her life mission thwarted when she starts to fall for her target. Of course, I’m a sucker for the star-crossed lovers theme so I was rooting for these two to make it.

I warmed to Adrian immediately. He’s a decent guy; you can see that when he’s hanging out with his friends. Ayda similarly has a warmth about there that really shouldn’t go with a trained assassin. When she stops a Wendigo (vicious monster type) from feeding on her friends, her quip, “Well we all need to cut back here and there” made me laugh.

The descriptions of the secret hanging gardens in the mystical forest were gorgeous. Having whatever you want – clothes, food, etc magically appear before you when visiting these lush garden sounds great. I look forward to reading more about the world of Bid’ A Ban.

An enjoyable, easy read.

I was thrilled to be asked to beta read this book by the author having read other work by her and really enjoying her writing style. I really liked this book. The world and characters of Chrysalis came alive for me with a storyline that was fresh and unique. As it states in the synopsis the story begins after a war between man and the supernatural and the world is now at peace with the races coexisting in harmony. There are those, however, who have never accepted the changes and the intermingling of the races and strive to return to the previous way of life and glory of the Bid'ABan. Ayda is created; she is a supernatural being that is constructed from the DNA of a human and a supernatural. She is educated and trained with the goal and sole existence to assassinate the heir of the current Thunderkin ruler. As the story progresses Ayda begins to think for herself and step out of her programming and the roller coaster ride takes off with lots of twists and turns that kept me glued to the pages wanting to see what was going to happen next. There is a little insta-love and some teenage angst, but this was not really inappropriate for the storyline and in my opinion it does add to the enjoyment of the read. The story culminates with a bit of a cliffhanger, but it is not one that is glaringly frustrating, and it does leave room for the imagination to wonder and crave to read what happens next. As the copy I read was an ARC there were some small typos and grammatical blips, but they were minimal and I anticipate further editing will be done prior to release. Overall I enjoyed Chrysalis very much and look forward to continuing the journey.

I liked the Native American feel of the story, but all sorts of unpronounceable names and groups were introduced early on and we never encountered them in the story. Lots of unresolved references, no one is going to remember foreshadowing from a previous book! I liked the nod to I, Robot and the assassin with a conscience.

I would read the second book to see what will happen next.

Likes:
* Glossary of terms in Forward was helpful, but more terms would've been better
* Adrian Dusong, Kuuyi leader's son, sounded like a great future leader, responsible, well-liked, talented and handsome
* Ace's loyalty to his friend
* Ayda's friends girly carnivore human Lysette and environmentalist Thunderkin River

Dislikes:
* Slow, confusing start
* Few typos but in the confusing names, so this made it more confusing
* Don't know why both terms Terrain and Human were used interchangeably
* Descriptive references to unknown entities, not defined or elaborated upon (Ouroboros, Drakon, ect.)
* Focus on physical looks sounds like typical YA lust at first sight

Ayda was created to assassinate Adrain a ThunderKin. Adrain's uncle, Leader Cheveyo had Ayda created for this purpose and this purpose only. But after a couple of failed attempts she made while trying to kill Adrain she began to wonder why she was failing at the one thing she was trained for her whole life. After she gave it some thought she finally came to the conclusion that she was developing feelings for Adrain. She realized that she could not harm him ever. She would now become his protector. She would keep him safe and would not let anyone else harm him even if it meant her own life would be taken away.
After having someone make a couple of attempts on his life Adrain begins to wonder what was going on and why was someone trying to kill him? One day right before an attempt was made he felt someone watching him and began looking around and spotted Ayda watching him. She thought Adrain had seen her but she was like that was impossible. She was starting to have feelings for Adrain and he was also starting to fall in love with her as well. So now Ayda had become his protector and not his killer. Later after another failed attempt he began putting two and two together and came up with the fact that it was Ayda trying to kill him. He was like, Ayda? Why would she do this? She did not seem like the kind of person who would do something of this nature but she was doing it.

Ayda has wanted to know more about her culture and who she was with her being half-human and half- ThunderKin, her father was ThunderKin. Ayda has confessed that she has always wanted to fly. Adrain offers to take Ayda on a Kii flight. She is not sure at first but he tells her that he is an expert. Ayda can't resist the chance to fly even if she is not doing it herself. So she accepts; Adrain changes and Ayda climbs on his back and he takes her up in the sky for the ride of her life. Ayda is like a kid on a roller coaster ride; she throws her hands up in the air. After the ride is over and Adrain takes her back to the ground and lets her off and changes back into his human form Ayda realizes how much she has fallen in love with the man that she as an assassin was sent to kill. Anyone that would climb on someone's back and go soaring through the air on their back has got to have a lot of trust for that person and be totally and completely in love with them.

I was asked by Michelle if I would like to be one of her beta readers for Chrysalis and of course I said yes and I am very glad I did. I really and truly loved reading Chrysalis and can't wait for the second book. Michelle did a fantastic job of creating and describing a whole new world. She described it in a way that you wished you could go visit Bid'ABan and sit down for a chat with Ayda, Adrain, River, Al and all of the characters.

Ayda is an Achina, half human and half Thunderkin, who was created with only one purpose. To kill Adrian, the next in line to rule one of the three districts of Bid'A Ban. She was molded for this purpose, trained for it from the minute of her creation. She even makes a few attempts to accomplish her mission before she discovers something she never expected, something no one ever anticipated. She falls in love with the handsome Adrian. But it's more than just physical attraction. Ayda knows he will make a good leader. So she deserts her mission and decides to protect Adrian from the other monsters being sent to destroy him and his family. And he'll need protection because Adrian's uncle won't give up until Adrian is dead.

Chrysalis is a unique and engaging young adult story. The author brings us a futuristic world where paranormal creatures have merged with humans. Even though there is much displeasure on both sides, Ayda and Adrian work to bring unity to a divided world. Both the characters and the world they live in are well developed. I loved the little details about the new world, like the tele-orb that allows people to view holographic images when they talk on the phone. Even the food is described. There was one scene where one of the girls was eating a fire-bird and when they find a feather, it creates a burst of light that temporarily blinds everyone at the table. Details like this really bring the fictional world to life. But the really amazing part about this story is the unquenchable love between Adrian and Ayda. A love that defied her very nature and that will hopefully allow him to overcome his anger when he learns her original purpose.

Throughout the book you are introduced to diverse paranormal beings, many of which are taken from Native American myth. Some of the creatures Ayda encounters include fae, wendigos, golems and so many more. There are fast-faced battles, tests of friendships, and sweet romantic scenes. The book does end with a major cliffhanger, which only means I'll be counting down the days until the sequel is released. If you are looking for a fantasy story that stands out from the norm, this is definitely the book to read.

Firstly id like to thank Michelle Cornwell- Jordan for giving me this book in exchange for an honest review

Ayda is an Achina, half human and half Thunderkin. A being which is created and not born and whom are created for a specific purpose. In Aydas case Cheveyo (ruler of Taawa - One of the three Territories) orders Ayda to be created to assassinate Adrian, the heir to Kuuyi one of the three territories in Bid'A Ban so that Cheveyo may rule both territories and unite Bid'A Ban once more.

However after 2 failed attempts Ayda begins to realize that she no longer wants to end Adrian's life, which then leads her to believe that she is somehow defective since Achinas don't question anything they only carry out there purpose. She then decides to protect Adrian instead which also complicates things once they start to spend more time with one another and fall for each other.

With the help of Al her Cheveyo's secretary she will do everything she can to make sure Adrian lives even if it means sacrificing everything.

I enjoyed reading this book however for me there were a quite a few things I disliked which brought my rating down.

For instance:

The unpronounceable names and places - I understand Michelle was world building but every time someone or thing was mentioned I became tongue tied.
Inconsistencies throughout, such as Ayda being the top Achina Assassin created and yet in the first sign of battle she didn't focus and when trying to get everyone to safety was to focused on god only knows and didn't make sure they weren't followed.
The relationship between Ayda and Adrian wasn't detailed enough for my liking. Yes they liked each other then suddenly they were dating there was no description of how they got to know one another. Only 4 weeks later..

However after listing those things I didn't like I am still looking forward to book two and to see how Ayda and Adrian progress on there journey

Chrysalis is one of the best books that I have read in awhile. Having read other books by this author I knew this was going to be a good one too. I just didn't realize that I would love it so much. I loved the supernatural world that the author created. I think it would be a fun place to visit or even live. The characters were very real and the story flowed right along.

Ayda is a supernatural being, an achina. She is part human and part Thunderkin. She was created for one purpose, to kill Adrian, the Thunderkin heir. After a couple of attempts she comes to realize that she has feelings for him and she can't kill him. So instead she decides to become his protector. Once his uncle Cheveyo finds out things get turned upside down. Then there is this weird supernatural, Wem that has gone rogue and is out to destroy Ayda, Adrian, their friends and family.

There is a lot going on throughout the story. Action, suspense, friendship and romance. There are lots of twists and turns that will leave you wanting more. I could not get enough of this story, it was so good. This will appeal to fans of fantasy and/or dystopian. The way the author combined the two really made the story unique and something special. I continue to be a fan of this amazing author. I can't wait to see what is in store for book two.

Wonderful world with epic romance!

First half of this book is boring because I can expect what will happen next, but when I reached the second half, I was excited. I love how the author made fantastic world of many creatures. Friendship, love, royal, and truth blended in one awesome book. But, I found three typo of words inside. It's not a big deal. It's still be a good novel to read.

So... Five stars by the way!

Ayda Blackhawk is an Achina, half human and half Thunderkin, who was created to kill Adrian Dusong, a next leader of Thunderkin Divisions. She was created by Leader Cheveyo, Adrian's uncle. She was trained for her whole life to learn how to kill Adrian. But, soon after their first met, both falling in love each other. It was sweet and lust. Then, Ayda turned herself to protect Adrian from other killers because there was a lot of killers that would like to see the death of Adrian. They faced many problems and the book ended with an opening journey to new world.

I can't wait to read next book! I would recommended this book to people who loves supernatural story and enjoy cliche love problem with spectacular ending.

I really liked this book. The plot was different from the books I usually read. It was really creative and interesting. I think the author has done an amazing job. Ayda was created to kill Adrian but failed both of the times because she couldn't do it. Ayda and Adrian fall in love with each other even though Ayda isn't supposed to and instead of killing him she becomes his protector. That's when their journey begins. I really enjoyed this book and recommend it to anyone who likes a paranormal/romance/adventure book.

Initially I wasn’t really sure I liked this book. It is written in a different style than I usually read and it took a while to grasp the different words for the types of people/mythological creatures in the story. However, the further I got in the book, the better it got. I can’t wait to read the next one to find out what happens next.

I really enjoyed that the author kept surprising me with new twists that I totally didn’t see coming. I especially enjoyed the fact that this group of “Kin” had a human in their friendship circle. It was nice to see realistic reactions from a “normal” person and how they/I would react if this kind of stuff started happening in my town. That bit of realism helped ground the books and keep them honest.

I give this book 4 out of 5 clouds.

Chrysalis is a well thought book though, I felt as if everything was rushed. The story, in the start was a little complicated and confusing, where you really needed to scratch your head for the understanding. The plot was amazing, though the pace was a little too fast. Adya and Adrian’s relationship was very well defined and the change in it, very well described. Though the emotions radiating off from the different characters like Al, Adrian’s mom, Ace, River, Lysette, Chevyo, and also Catori were not all that clear, but were well introduced and brought about. Even the world of Bid'ABan was not described the way I was expecting. Nevertheless, I would really love to read the next book as soon as it comes.

I really liked this book. It had amazing characters that I could really connect with. They all had special personalities that made them all unique in their own way. I loved the way the author used such beautiful description. You could really imagine that you were there. I recommend reading this book and all the other books written by this author. She has a true passion for writing and you feel it through her words. I can't wait for all her books in the future!

(This review can also be found at Spare Reads)

A copy of the book was kindly provided by the author in exchange for an honest review.

So it seems that my misfortune continues. If reading Rouge was a mistake led on because I misjudged its contents by the fancy cover, then picking up Chrysalis was a mistake caused by the exact opposite reason. I wish I had judged the cover more, that way I probably would have saved myself from this miserable read. I always try my best to support self published books and authors, but Chrysalis is perhaps the epitome of why self published books have such a bad reputation.

In one line, Chrysalis is a cheesy teenager romance trying to disguise itself as an epic fantasy. There is hardly anything else in this book other than the romantic relationship between Ayda and Adrian. But even the romance is poorly constructed and as cliched as one can possibly imagine. The thing that amused me the most is Michelle Jordan's pathetic attempt to justify the instalove between Ayda and Adrian through the voice of another character in the story.
Adrian looked at Ayda and said, "It started for me when I first laid eyes on her."

"Awww, now that was sweet, even if I don't believe in the over sentimentalization that they feed teenagers in film, music, and books. I believe this to be sincere and very touching." she (River) said as she finished up her pizza.

I don't even know if I should laugh or cry when an author is so desperately trying to convince me that the romance between these two MCs is real. Another big disappointment I have with Chrysalis is the lack of action scenes. Ayda is supposed to be the best solider ever existed, but from her failed assassination attempts to the few fights she had with Wem, I cannot see how she excelled her trainings at all. There are simply not enough details to make it believable.

The world building in Chrysalis is extremely confusing as well. Even though the book used some pages to explain the past conflicts and the struggles remained, it still had me bewildered most of the time. As for the part I did grasp (or I thought I did), a lot more work is required to make it less illogical and unrealistic. I cannot really complement the writing either as it is so very plain and stiff. I had a hard time finishing it and often found myself skipping through sentences. I wish there are more descriptions that could bring me a better sense of the atmosphere and a clearer picture of the world.

Chrysalis is the first novel in Michelle Cornwell-Jordan's The World of Bid'ABen series, though I don't think I will be reading any subsequent installments. It started quite promising with a world that is now roamed over by humans and supernatural beings together, but the story went downhill quickly when the romance took over the plot. Hopefully, I will have better luck next time on my reading journey.

I think the blurb tricked me or something. It seemed interesting but when I read the book (more like scan through half the pages), it didn't appeal to me.
The only interesting about Chrysalis was the world of Bid'ABan and those who lived there. I couldn't connect to Ayda but I do not dislike her.
The relationship of Ayda and Adrian seemed to be fast despite Ayda wanting to kill Adrian because it was what ordered of her and she believed in it. I feel that their relationship didn't develop properly. It's like after a few short meeting they love each other but that could't count because Adrian liked her the first time he saw her. But I like Aidan's and Ace's friendship. It's good to know you have a friend who got your back.

Although the ending kind of made it interesting and probably because of that I would want to read the installments to this series. The twist in the story makes up for it as well and hopefully the upcoming installments have improved.
