Mario Ramos (1958–2012) was one of Belgium's most influential picture book makers. He was born in Brussels to a Belgian mother and a Portuguese father.
Sometimes it's possible to be too full of yourself and too confident about how great you look. In this amusing story. the wolf cleans himself and goes out for a stroll in the woods. With everyone he meets--characters from fairy tales and nursery rhymes such as Little Red Riding Hood, the Seven Dwarves, even Snow White, he seeks reassurance of his good looks. He gets his comeuppance, though, when he encounters a baby dragon. This one is a great readaloud.
Here's the second book I've found by Mario Ramos. Once again, his book stars an arrogant anti-hero.
By the end, that arrogant wolf is taken down a peg.
Whether or not you find this funny? I'll put it this way.
* If you did find it funny, congrats. Because I'm giving this book FIVE STARS. * If you weren't a fan, not the least bit... there are other Goodreaders like you. Friend away!
This is one of those books where the fun is all about doing the voices when reading aloud. The conceited, arrogant wolf’s use of language lends himself perfectly to dramatic flourishes of the voice and rolls of the tongue at every opportunity, somewhere between Brian Blessed and The Birdcage...
This book was on our "New Shelf" at work. I had to pick it up. This is a story about a wolf who is very full of himself. He thinks he is the best looking animal in the forest. He comes across Little Red Riding Hood and asks her who is the most handsome creature in the woods? She says that it is him. Mr. Wolf then meets the Three Little Pigs, Snow White, and 7 dwarves. He asks each of them in turn who is the most handsome animal in the woods. They all reply that it is him. Finally, he meets a baby dragon. He asks the dragon the same question and the dragon answers, "My dad and he taught me to do this..." The baby dragon breathes fire onto the wolf and burns off most of his hair. Mr. Wolf is now no longer the most handsome creature in the forest.
Wolf takes a stroll through the woods, meeting various characters from fairy tales: Red Riding Hood, Three we Little Pigs, Snow White. He brags about how handsome he is and none of the characters is brave enough to disagree. The wolf gets his own comeuppance when he meets a baby dragon. Bold black lines and color define the wolf and the woods he travels through. The other characters are smaller with light lines accordingly.
The Big Bad Wolf admires himself so much that everyone he meets in the forest must agree. Who would argue with a wolf?
Ramos writes a fun and sassy tale about an arrogant animal. His interactions with other fairytale creatures is quite amusing. The illustrations are bold and bright. Young listeners might not catch all the turn of phrase but older listeners and readers will be amused by the wolf's questions and statements.
