This was bad. Not just meh, I'm not enjoying this Firefly-styled novel as much as I'd hoped, but kind of cringe. I think a lot, but not all, of it comes from the fact that I have the audiobook version. The narrator is terrible, confidently pronouncing his lines like he's trying to reach the back of the theatre, and making women sound like lisping cartoon characters. I actually giggled at one point where a male character thinks about how much he enjoys listening to one female character's voice, because to us she sounded more like Daisy Duck than Angelina Jolie.
This is a short novel, only 4ish hours and the story builds but does not resolve. It's more like the first episode in an ongoing space series, one which I will not continue.
Thanks NetGalley for the book. I really wanted to like it, but honestly the audiobook needs some serious work.
It looks like this is a longish series. Certainly it is longer than a novella but it takes me back to the early scifi books of the 50's and sixties. The style is a lot similar to some of them too. It's fairly edited in that it's easy to read, there's no wondering what the heck is being said and, my pet hate, smuttiness is absent. You can give it to your daughter to read. I think the fight scenes could do with a bit of editing by an expert but I expect this will improve naturally. Four is a fair score.
Old school science fiction, with alien allies and enemies and a battle or two. The ending is one f the better cliffhangers drawing you into the next in the series
Congratulations to the team of James David Victor for this amazing series. It’s extremely nice to find such interesting and exciting authors who not only write intelligently but also provide top rated plots, characters and excitement in the stories. I’m really looking forward to the next book in this series.
Action-packed from the beginning till the end with enigmatic characters of diverse life forms this ragtag crew is on call to help anyone who asks for a fee of course. When they encounter a malignant force that enslaves minds all bets are off and it's time to kick butt, good storyline, Baz.
Parts of this story seem familiar and then other parts are completely unexpected. There is no resolution at the end of the book. Instead, we have the opening of a deeper mystery than the threads found earlier in this book. At question is whether the next installment will provide any answers, or only more questions. The character development is good even with the very diverse cast of players so I expect I will continue for at least one more installment.
Good start. Now we need to see where this is going. The plot is a little different from other books of this type. The characters are a bunch of misfits from different parts of galaxy. They seem to make a good team. I'm ready for part2.
Such a fun book! Aliens, AI, and the ruins of an ancient alien race: all the ingredients of a perfect science fiction series. The story is fast moving and well written, and the characters are likable (I’m looking forward to them being fleshed out more fully in future books!)
interesting cast of characters, fast paced, good story
This book was very good. Fast paced, interesting, eclectic classed of characters. The story was not very long, and the world building was pretty interesting. Have to see where the series goes enjoyable.
In the book Ruins of the Prime Ones, author James David Victor begins the Sentinels series. Captain Melias Volery is a Sentinel, a soldier that travels the galaxy protecting those that cannot protect themselves, for the right price. But have they taken on more than they can handle when rescuing a group of scientists from the Prime Ones? And who are these creatures? And what power do they have over the minds of others? And how can they stop them? This is a great fast-paced action packed story. It was very short but engaging. I would recommend this book. The audio-book narration was very good. I received a copy of this audio-book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Good old space wars, the Sentinels are a vigilante -like group that fight and help people in trouble with space pirates, tyrants, or corrupt governments. Captain Melias and his crew on the Goose, are a rag tag bunch from many worlds, beings formerly from military organizations or other factions who have become a close ally for space farers. They discover a frightening and dangerous alien species that are creating zombie-like creatures using mind control. These mindless creatures are controlled to annihilate anyone living in areas that the Old ones want to conquer and destroy. A good read. The series continues as the members of Goose search for the source and evil spirits or beings behind the insidious plot.
Potentially wonderful space opera and galactic mystery
I most enjoy books that have the search for ancient races at their core. Whilst this book, the first in series, leads on to such a search my initial enjoyment was muted. Yet another We Will Cleanse The Unpure Novel I find dissatisfying. Hopefully the wonderfully rendered crew of The Goose will, in the Search sequel, take me and other readers on an intriguing adventure rather than just, Gotta Purify Everybody bandwagon. Well written, great potential but hopefully not the overworn plot of Purification at the loss of Adventure. Next book please ....
Nifty little universe that has been created here in a short story. Lots of potential with the characters of the main team. The world building is well developed and thought out, and I imagine that it will be fun series once we get more content. Lots of action, fun dialogue and plenty of lore for packed into a very digestible length.
The actual story line was great, but a lot was just extra words - over explaining which made you lose the cadence. The characters were a little one dimensional but held promise of further development. Wasn’t a fan of the narration
This was a good read. A lot of sci-fi action scenes and twists and turns. I like what is being set up here and the crew has good chemistry. Will definitely check out more in the series.
