Laura Lopez knew exactly what she wanted in life. The American dream: a husband, two kids (at least), and a white picket fence. She handled the white picket fence on her own; the hubby and kiddos were proving to be more difficult. The problem was that the alpha-holes she attracted were not marriage material.
At thirty-five, the curvy beauty was done wasting her time with men who weren’t ready or willing to make a commitment. Nothing was going to distract her from building the life she wanted. Not even a six-foot-four, tattooed, retired Navy SEAL with dimples so deep she wanted to lick chocolate out of them.
Knox Savage knew exactly what he wanted in life. The freedom to live on his terms—no commitments, no responsibilities, no worries for the rest of his days. He was ready to live out his best Hakuna Matata life.
After serving his country for twenty years, the retired Navy SEAL was footloose and fancy-free. He wanted to travel and reconnect with family. One of his first stops was to spend the summer visiting his brother and cousin. Three months in Whisper Lake, and then he’d be on to his next adventure. Nothing was going to derail his plans. Not even a stunning, smart, sarcastic Sofia Vergara look-alike who made him want things he’d never wanted before.
Author’s Note: Had to Be You is a lust-at-first-sight, small town, secret expirationship romance. This tale of happily ever after follows two headstrong, stubborn thirty-somethings who both think they have their lives figured out. Spoiler alert: they don’t. Their road to HEA is windy and filled with a late-night cat rescue, sperm bank date, supportive and meddling friends and family, three geriatric mafiosa matchmakers, a stolen car, and much, much more.
NEW YORK TIMES & USA TODAY bestselling author Melanie Shawn writes HEAs filled with sweet and sassy heroines, heroes who are cinnamon rolls in the streets alpho-holes in the sheets, casts of supportive *cough: meddling* friends and family who put the fun in funny, toe-curling combustible heat, and sugary sweet “aww” moments that will have your hearts and e-readers melting.
So happy to be back at the home of the Fairy Tale themed town, Whisper Lake. I love families that live there, especially the Savage men and the Needlepoint Mafia. Knox is no longer in the Navy and is taking some time off to see family and make sure that his brother is marrying the right woman. Laura lives in town and owns the local sandwich shop, Snow Whites Snack Shack with an apartment over it. They both attend a wedding in town and once their eyes meet they feel an instant magnetism to the other. Following the wedding, he cant get her out of his head and she cant get far enough away. She is looking for someone to give her the whole package, kids included. Knox wasnt looking, just wanting to have some fun. No matter what they do or where they go they keep running into each other. Even science says that they should be together. Why do they keep fighting it?
The only word I can think of to describe the Savage Brother's is HOT! I love this series and I fell in love with Ford and Chrissy's story but Laura and Knox's story was even better. From the first chapter I was laughing out loud. I was also drawn into their story. It was hot, sweet, heartwarming and it even came with a few surprises. I am really looking forward to reading the next book. This one gave me a very big book hangover! I absolutely loved everything about it. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Laura is a strong willed woman who never settles for anything less than she deserves. She wants the home, husband and children to raise and even if she has already had two of the husbands that didn't work out, it doesn't mean she can't have the children she wants without a husband.
Knox spent 20 years in a relationship with the Navy. No woman has been able to hold his attention for long because he knew that he could be moving or disappearing for however long Uncle Sam requested. Now that he has retired from the Navy, he wants to spend the summer with his brother and his favorite cousin (who grew up along side him like a brother).
On his first night in town, he meets Laura who spurns his advances because he was upfront in the beginning that he didn't want marriage or kids.
After coming up with an agreement, can the two of them maintain that agreement when faced with the consequences? Can they just keep it business, or will it become very personal and have them get their happily ever after they weren't sure they could have.
Once again, Whisper Lake does seem to have the magical water where everyone ends up happily ever after. I love being able to come back and see those characters who got their happily ever afters root for those that are still waiting for theirs.
Laura and Knox’s story in Had to Be You by Melanie Shawn, book two in the Whisper Lake: Savage Brothers series is a lust-at-first-sight, small town, secret expiration-ship romance. After 20 years in the military, Knox Savage is finally free and his life is finally his own. He goes to Whisper Lake to check out his brother’s new girlfriend and spend time with his favorite cousin, who grew up alongside him, like a brother. On his first night there he meets Laura, his fantasy come true, who spurns his advances because he was upfront in the beginning that he didn't want marriage or kids. Laura is a strong willed woman who never settles for anything less than she deserves. She wants the home, husband and children to raise; even if she already had two of the husbands that didn't work out, it doesn't mean she can't have the children she wants without a husband. Laura agreed to “let Knox” try to get her pregnant instead of artificial insemination, but things don’t go as smoothly as planned. With lots of sneaking around, Laura and Knox will be faced with their time together becoming more personal than the business agreement they started with.
Melanie Shawn wrote a story about family, about overcoming obstacles and coming out stronger in the end. A roller coaster ride together toward a HEA that includes: a late-night cat rescue, sperm bank date, supportive and meddling friends and family, three geriatric mafiosa matchmakers, a stolen car, and much, much more. Once again, Whisper Lake seems to have the magical water where everyone ends up happily ever after. I highly recommend Had to Be You to other readers and look forward to the next story in this series.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.
So excited for the continuation of this series! The next Savage brother is Knox, who is finally home and deciding his next career move after his career with the armed forces. Coming to town to make sure that his brother’s new girlfriend is the real deal and not trying to scam or hurt his brother, he meets Laura, who he rents a place from while he’s in town, and he’s immediately drawn to her, and the feelings are mutual. After two failed marriages, Laura believes that love just isn’t in the books for her and with her biological clock towards the end of things, she decides that she will look into making those dreams happen on her own, until she meets Knox. They start a secret relationship with the goal of Laura getting pregnant to start her family with Knox having no responsibility, but as they spend time together and continue to get to know each other, the feelings turn into love, and thankfully Knox realizes things before it’s too late and goes after what he wants in his next move, which is Laura. Such a cute read, and I can’t wait for the next Savage brother! I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
Had to Be You is the second installment of the Whisper Lake: Savage Brothers series by Melanie Shawn. It follows Ford's younger brother Knox and his journey after retiring from the Navy.
Knox Savage is back in Whisper Lake trying to determine if Ford's new love interest is worthy of his big brother. Or if she's just after him for his money. It doesn't take long for Knox to find out that is very much, so not the case with Chrissy.
Laura Lopez is running out of time. Out of time for her dreams to come true. Now might be the time for Plan B. Obviously not ideal or Plan A, but if she wants to get to her dreams, she has to find a way. When she meets Knox Savage, she knows he's everything she doesn't want, but at the same time, is everything she's attracted to.
Can Laura and Knox find some common ground to connect? Or will both Laura and Knox cut it off before anything can blossom? I loved the chemistry and internal back and forth with Laura and Knox!
I was captivated from page one! I truly loved Knox & Laura's book. It's a heartwarming, fun, sexy & moving romance. From the second Knox saw Laura from across the room, he was a goner. Laura, felt the same. But she could just tell he was trouble & would break her heart. He had been a SEAL for 20 yrs. Now he wants to enjoy life & spend time with his family. She owns a business in town, loves her family & friends. What Laura wants most is a baby. But Knox & Laura are the complete opposite in how they feel. Can these two people find HEA? Great characters, storyline & small town charm.
This book was so good. Knox Savage is finally free of the military. After 20 years his life is finally his own. He goes to Whisper Lake to check out his brothers new girlfriend. On his first night there he sees Laura Lopez his every fantasy come to life. All Laura wants is to be married with kids, Knox wants nothing holding him down. These two are fireworks together. Great read
Knox Savage & Laura Lopez The needlepoint mafia of Whisper Lake seem to be uninvolved in Laura and Knox’s story. Laura is an independent woman who knows what she wants in her personal and professional life. She owns her own small business and wants to be a mom. Knox is feeling free while spending time with his family after retiring from the navy. He isn’t sure what is next step will be in his personal or professional life. The sparks and chemistry between Laura and Knox are off the charts, love at first sight. Their expirationship is an adventure to read.
Had to be you is book 2 in the Whisper Lakes: Savage Brothers Series and sees Knox Savage get his HEA with Laura Lopez.
From their very first interaction their chemistry was off the chart.
Knox is a recently retired Navy SEAL who says he doesn’t want commitments and Laura Lopez has two failed marriages behind her and a biological clock ticking.
This is a lust-at-first sight, small town secret romance.
I received an ARC of Had to be you and this is my voluntary honest review.
All Laura wanted was a decent man and a few babies. How hard could that be? Apparently a lot harder than she expected. Being married twice and both of them being liars, she doesn't expect much better. So now she wants one last hurrah before having a baby by herself. Meeting Knox sets her pulse racing and alarm bells ringing, he's a walking red flag., She decides to go on a date with him to scare him off, when that doesn't work and he offers to be her sperm donor, she thinks she can have got monkey sex with him and when he leaves in 3 months she can become a mother on her own. Only neither of them bargained on falling for the other.. I was cheering these two on the whole way, begging form them to get their heads out of their butts. Melanie Shawn never fails to deliver an awesome read.
Had to Be You is the second book in the Whisper Lake: Savage Brothers series, which is another fantastic story!
Knox Savage is the brother of Ford, and he has just recently retired from the Navy. He has come back to Whisper Lake to make sure that his brother, Ford's new love is really in it for love and not his money. Plus, he's not sure what he wants his next steps in life to be, so he's going to take time to figure it out.
Laura Lopez has dreams for her life and she's about at the point where she's going to take matters into her own hands. She wants to have a child, however she hasn't found "Mr. Right", so she's ready to have a baby on her and do it on her terms.
When Knox and Laura meet, the chemistry between them is palpable immediately, but do they want the same things? Will they be able to find common ground or will things end before they can really begin?
I always enjoy small town romances and this one was no exception. Any trip to Whisper Lake is a good one and I would recommend picking this one up!
**I voluntarily read an early copy of this title in exchange for an honest review**
I am a fan of the authors Melanie Shawn. This is one of their best. Laura and Knox are a great couple ! They have no intention of falling in love. The descriptions of both charecters is great and I don't want to spoil it. If you love a great romantic book w/ slot of a physical relationship this is your book!
Laura and Knox were fabulous! The sneaking around was fun though as it turned out, unnecessary. You almost knew the ending early, but there were still some surprises. I can’t wait for the next one in the series.
Oh my! What a read. I loved this insta attraction with a hint of slow burn. Knox and Laura were dynamite together. They each thought they had a clear idea of what they thought their future looked like and then they met each other and each had an internal struggle and found love was a strong factor and when you love someone with your whole heart and soul then the picture of your future just isn’t complete without them in it.
Laura and Knox appear to have completely different goals in life. She wants to be married and have babies and he wants his freedom to travel and be alone. They have an instant spark unlike anything either of them have experienced. Will they become the next project for the town or will they figure things out on their own? I love everything about Whisper Lake and this story! Another fun read from Melanie Shawn.
I suppose it’s a good thing that I’ve learned over time not to give up on books too early. Because if I hadn’t, I don’t think I would have made it past the first few chapters of this one. Since our female protagonist in this one Laura Lopez does a lot of talking about red flags in regards to her dating prospects I’m going to call this my Red Flag Review. Red flag #1. Knox Savage, recently retired Navy Seal has decided to spend a few months in Whisper Lake where his older brother Ford the male protagonist from Stay With You, the last book in this series and his cousin Easton reside. I came to really enjoy the Ford character almost as much as his love interest Chrissy in their book. In this book it was myimpression the author made Ford appear even more grumpy than he did in his book before meeting Chrissy. Red flag #2. Knox attends a wedding as his cousin Easton’s plus one. There he sees Laura Lopez twice divorced thirty-five-year-old Latino bombshell. The instant chemistry between them is nothing short of explosive with all of the physical reactions you’ve come to expect in a contemporary romance. But Laura has been around the block more than a few times now. After two failed marriages and other disappointing relationships, with her biological time clock ticking, she’s looking for Mr. Right not Mr. Right Now. And Mr. Right is a man who wants marriage and a family. I’m sort of surprised that after two failed marriages, fear of the institution of marriage wasn’t a problem for Laura. While dancing together Laura flat out asks Knox his thoughts on marriage and children. Knox states very clearly that he’s not interested in either marriage or fathering children. Laura then states very emphatically that despite their obvious chemistry she has no interest in dating him, leaving Knox standing on the dance floor with his mouth open. Because Knox is oh so handsome and charming being rejected by a woman he’s interested in shocks him. Despite Laura’s clear message she isn’t interested in a guy with no future beyond a hot fling, Knox continues to pursue Laura for a short-term relationship. It doesn’t matter that for the first time in his life the mere presence of a woman leaves him speechless, he’s still thinking short term fling. Red flag #3. Then there’s Laura’s obnoxiously intrusive and overbearing family who tell her she’s being too picky when it comes to potential husbands. Her mother even tries to set her up with Mario, her first ex who cheated on her. Then her mother insists she’s going to go on a date her aunt has set up for her even though Laura has tried to tell her politely no. Because Laura has been raised to respect her elders at apparently any cost, she’s too polite to put them in their place when they’re interfering with or commenting obnoxiously on her personal life because, “Oh, they mean well.” If this book wasn’t written by one of my long time favorite authors I’d be checking out of it at this point. Red flag #4. Knox Savage is a coward and I absolutely hate it when the male protagonist is a commitment phobic coward. Knox can’t get Laura Lopez off his mind. She makes him feel things he’s not used to feeling and want things he’s never wanted before. He’s so afraid that she has the power to change his life plan that first he tries avoiding her to stop obsessing over her. When that doesn’t work he thinks if he spends enough time with her his infatuation will wear off. Which leads to him wearing her down into accepting one date with him. Red flag #5. Laura has recently learned that the cysts she has on her ovaries will prevent her from getting pregnant the old fashioned way. In an effort to scare off Knox once and for all she takes him to a fertility clinic where she reviews prospective sperm donors. Knox offers to be her sperm donor. She agrees to secretly have sex with Knox making him believe its to procreate but really she wants one last hot fling before she gives up her sex life to focus on becoming and being a mother. Since she’s already acknowledged their sexual chemistry and Knox is looking for the same short term sexual relationship she is, it made no sense to me that she didn’t just tell him that she wanted the same thing so let’s get it on! Red Flag #6. Of course while they’re busy supposedly making a baby they are falling in love. At least Laura is brave enough to admit it even if the idea that she’s in love with a man who will only be around for a couple of months and has no interest in marriage and children depresses her. Knox is so frightened by the idea that he may be falling in love with Laura and no longer wants to be free and single he can’t even admit it to himself. You really don’t have to be a fortune teller to predict the future for this couple. But since I’m such a sucker for happily ever afters and this story had a good if all too brief one I’m going to give it 4 stars rather than 3.
This is such a heartwarming book! I loved Laura and wanted to put my arms around her so many times. She was from a big Hispanic family and all she ever wanted was to have babies and be a mother. Unfortunately life was not working her way. Knox came to town to see his brother and his cousin. Knox was charmed and charming. When Knox laid eyes on Laura at a wedding, I think he was lost then but didn’t know it. Laura had always fallen for the bad boys, so she wanted to stay far away from Knox. That was just not in the cards since Knox was her short term tenant for the apartment above her shop. I loved Knox and what a giving and caring person he was. You won’t be able to stop from falling in love with him! I strongly encourage you to read the book. I was given a copy and voluntarily wrote a review.
OMG! Hawt! Caution! Ovaries exploding while reading! Knox was such a perfect man who was the total package, once he got his head on straight! Beautiful book, fantastic characters, and terrific ending!
Knox and Laura are the sweetest. The chemistry is ridiculous with these two! I loved the banter between them and how they fought their feelings so hard before they were literally in the face with them. What a great story! Knox would make anyone’s ovaries hurt. The man is pure sexy! Add in that he babysits and takes care of her and wow!!
Laura and Knox meet at a wedding. It should have been love at first sight for both have a plan for their future. Knox is fresh out of the military-retired Navy Seal and doesn’t want to put down roots. He’s only stopping by to visit his brothers for a few months. Laura knows exactly what she wants- to be a mom and have a family. She wants nothing to do with someone who has a bunch for red flags. She also doesn’t have time for a summer fling or does she?
Laura and Knox are a spectacular couple. They have chemistry from across the room. Know doesn’t want the marriage and the 2.5 kids, that’s all Laura wants….she wants to be a mom and with two divorces other name she feels like time is running out on the mom part. So on their first date she takes Knox to a fertility clinic thinking that will scare him but no he steps up with an offer she can’t refuse. I loved these two.
Melanie Shawn is just so good at making you feel the instant attraction between the characters, and this book is no different. It was the slow burn, they don't want the same thing kind of relationship that hooks you in from the start, with a few surprises thrown in there. Another book that you find really hard to put down. Definitely recommend!!
Laura is 35, and she has yet to fulfill her biggest life goal. She wants to have a baby! So when she finds out that because of the cysts on her ovaries, she may never be able to conceive the traditional way, she decides to look into her other options. Know has just gotten out of the Marines after 20 years he is finally free to do as he wants when he wants. Which brings him to Whisper Lake to visit his brother Ford and his cousin Keaton. His first day in town he is invited to a wedding of two people he doesn't know as his cousins plus one. At the reception, he sees a vision in a purple dress, and her name is Laura. Only she doesn't seem to want anything to do with him after they are introduced. What? He has never had trouble meeting women. After their dance, she can't seem to get away from him fast enough. Why? Will he see her again? Guess who turns out to be his landlord for the summer? Will Laura put her plan in motion and ignore her feelings? What about Knox? Only one way to find out is to read this great story by Melanie Shawn. You won't be disappointed!
Knox and Laura are to stubborn people who are insanely attracted to one another. They agree to have a temporary affair to help Laura get pregnant. Their temporary arrangement gets complicated when they start catching feelings. The issue is that neither of them confess their feelings and both of them think that the other doesn’t feel the same. Talk about mixed signals!!!
Laura gets pregnant and breaks it off with Knox. He now has to win his woman back and prove to her that he loves her and that he has changed his outlook regarding his future.
This was a great book. It was funny and emotional. I loved the family dynamics and how close the families were.
I’ve been WAITING for Knox to meet his perfect woman, and when it was hinted at who his childhood crush was, I just knew that Laura was going to knock him right off his axis in the best of ways.
Had to be You by Melanie Shawn truly proves that all best laid plans go to waste. Laura has a plan for her future, she’s 35 with two failed marriages under her belt, and is not going to let life, and one large meddling family, get in the way of her plans to have children. She’s ready for one last fun fling before things get serious… until Knox comes along and messes everything up. How can one man be so perfect?!
These two were such a great fit for one another, it just took a bit for them to get their heads unstuck to see that changing plans last second can work out for the best.
Absolutely adored this book. I just know that book 3 is going to somehow top this one and will be anxiously awaiting its release!
Second book in this series, and I'm finding that the comments regarding the first apply here as well. I really like the hero character, Knox. I didn't like Laura nearly as much. Again this "heroine" wanted absolutely nothing except to be a mother. Every single breath she took and every thought in her head was about being a mom. Her 10 questions for any date was absolutely OTT. I can't imagine any guy, even one who did want to get married and have children, responding well to that on a first date. Knox was right, she approached dating like a job interview.
I think I'm done with this series because I'm guessing that the rest of them flow like the first two and this is obviously not my trope.
