Natalie is a 40 something teen therapist living in Sydney, Australia with a bestseller "Teens, Queens and Alpha Bullies" to her credit. It looks as though she has it all - the same husband she fell in love with almost two decades ago, a lovely teenage daughter and a successful career. But what happens when her daughter, Myrah, who is having the hardest time surviving in the queendom clique at school, invalidates Natalie's every belief and Josh, her doting husband decides to part ways without providing much of an explanation? Emotional Hangover is a tale of three women in different age groups and their unique, yet intertwined, life experiences. Adolescent Myrah, who constantly treads on thin ice, while dealing with her BFF Miley and wooing the man of her dreams - Jason. The 30 something Tara's spiritual egotism, which comes in the way of her professional dreams and personal desires. The 40 something Natalie's quest to rediscover love and passion. Will these lovely ladies find the ultimate cure for their emotional hangover or will they give up to become resigned teetotallers?
Set in the beautiful country of Australia, “Emotional Hangover” tells the story of three women in three different stages of their lives.
First is the story of Natalie. On the family front, she is married to the man she fell in love with two decades back and has a teenage daughter. On her career front she is a teenage therapist and has a bestseller book credited to her name. She has all the perfect ingredients for a happy life. Second is that of Natalie’s daughter, Myrah. A teenager, who is on the top of the social ladder in her high school and has her sights set on a dreamy boy. Third is that of Tara, in her mid-thirties, is struggling with both her personal life and her career. Is it just a mid-life crisis that she is going through or something entirely different?
When the veil is removed, we find that the worlds of these three women are crashing down upon them. Natalie’s husband leaves her for another woman and a completely different life and doesn’t know how to deal with her own teenage daughter. Myrah is dumped by her group of friends, estranged from her crush and has a step-sister thrown into the mix. Tara’s odd standpoint on spiritualism and her image in her circle is questioned.
What I liked about this novel is that though this is a work of fiction, the characters and situations in the novel are very true to life. Though set in Australia, I guess women from all over the world will be able to relate to it in some way or the other. The irony, which is Natalie’s life, is portrayed very well. Society’s perception of some one’s life may not always be what it usually seem like. For instance, Natalie may come across as someone who has everything on life. But in truth she is left feeling lost and questioning her own life. Also, in case of Tara, people’s perception of her only pushes her to prove herself. And, Myrah is a typical teenager. The language adopted by the author to paint the story of these three women is flawless.
Overall, this a well-balanced novel with a lot to offer to the chic-lit lovers.
Emotional Hangover is the story of Natalie, Myrah her daughter & Tara her step sister. A 40 something teen therapist, Natalie is enjoying the success of her book when her perfect world is shattered. Her husband of two decades leaves her, falls in love with someone else and starts living a life which was complete opposite of his life with Natalie. All this makes her re think about the past and the make belief world that she had made around herself. What worsens the matter is the fact that she, who advices how to handle teens has not been able to communicate with her teenaged daughter.
She is 40, depressed & all alone. Will she come out of it? Can she repair her relationships and most importantly will she get over her emotional hangover?
Myrah is like just like another teenager. After being dumped by the so called ‘It’ group of her school things get bad for her when a misunderstanding stops her from getting into a relationship with the boy of her dreams, Jason. To complicate the matter further she her depressed controlling mother & a father (who is about to give her a sibling) to handle.
Will she overcome the obstacles?
Tara, often termed as eccentric and free loader has a lot to prove to the world. But the question is can she do it?

My verdict
I loved the cover of the book and wanted to read it as soon as I received it. The first thing that I liked about the book was the fact that though written by an Indian the book does justice to the characters and though I am no judge of Australian culture but I felt that the writing was not out of place and to be frank I was worried about these facts.
Though a little slow in the beginning, specially the teen therapist talk the book catches steam with the entry of Myrah & her friends and from thereon there is no looking back. The story is such that it keeps you hooked on. The narrative is fast paced & the story interesting, what more does one need? With its story line being such that the book caters to both the young & the not so young but not at all old ladies.
A coming of age story of three ladies who are trying to find struggle out of the images that they have created of themselves this is a good light hearted read and easily qualifies as must read chick lit.
