I don't think I've felt as strongly as I have about volume being the perfect ending for a character's journey as I have this one. Was it my favorite ending? No, but this is the best ending I could ever imagine for Mio, and I loved it for that reason.
I was VERY nervous about how this series would wrap up with the introduction of an entirely new arc near the end of the previous volumes because it seemed impossible to be wrapped up in a single volume, but both the creator and artist did a fantastic job! I was deeply touched by Mio's final story because forgiveness is not easy. As someone who struggled with deep anger towards a close family member, I very much appreciated how this manga conveyed that forgiveness IS hard, but that you have a right to your anger. You don't even have to forgive or forget if you don't want to!
But there is a beauty in forgiving, and even if you can't do that, there is beauty in willingly wanting those to find happiness…even for the person you hate.
So in that sense, this volume ended on a powerful note that resonated deeply within me. I also especially like how the "redemption" of a certain character was done and how they were not able to go down what seemed an "easier" route in a very critical moment. I admired Mio for saying that person WOULD fight (in a good way!) moving forward, because sometimes just getting up and fighting for another day is sometimes one of our toughest battles.
Overall, I am deeply thankful I picked up this series! It has been a gem to read, and I know I will miss seeing Mio and Yuri's adventures with their friends!
I would definitely recommend this series if you want a story that has very cute art, touching (and sometimes dark) themes, and a heroine who refused to stop fighting for justice for ALL people, unhumans and humans alike. It is a series I look forward to rereading in the future!
For the whole series, this is a fun and amazing journey packed full of adventure and intrigue. For the final volume, the plot and solution feels rushed and empty….
A change in mindset about anything is going to take time, so the happy ending leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Granted, the characters have been through enough….. AND this is a fictional story so it doesn’t need to be realistic. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Either way, this series is fun and cute! (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*:・゚✧
This manga was adorable. I loved the characters and the story. The only thing is that I felt it was rushed. I felt the story changed in volume 6 when the dragon was introduced. First it was about how other kingdoms were not treating humans right and then we moved to an isolated kingdom where the dragon is king. But anyways I loved the story, it could have been expanded, but it was still great.
In the Name of the Mermaid Princess ends as all romances do, with a happily ever after, but not before centuries of resentment between Humans and Unhumans comes to a violent clash. Ultimately, this series is about Mio and her growth to become the princess she was meant to be - compassionate, gentle, and fighting to bring equality and happiness to everyone through peaceful means. As a series aimed towards a younger teen audience, it's a good message, but systemic oppression and racism cannot be fixed as handily as the series implies. It would have been nice to see Mio and Chika continuing to work on the issues beyond the finale's proclamation.
On the other hand, Mio and Chika's romance throughout the series has been lovely. They communicate and support each other well, and their goals and beliefs align. It's a lot healthier than some of the shojo manga I read when I was younger.
Overall, this series has been a good read, hitting the right notes with Mio's character development, Mio and Chika's romance, generally engaging side characters, and consistently pretty artwork. While I would have liked to see it expand a bit more on tackling systemic injustice, which is one of its major themes, I think it did a decent job of showing how empathy and peaceful outreach is also important for creating change.
3.5 rounded up. I do not know if this is what I exactly expected for the final volume. The Yah-En deal did merge into the finale pretty well. Though I feel as if this was all a bit axed. I do feel as if giving it another volume might’ve been nice or maybe just one or two chapters. The lore expansion is really good and they handle the Dragon well enough. This volume does sort of move away from a racism metaphor to a more natural cycle of violence message. I think it does that message nice though I do feel it’s a bit of a miss to have the final volume change the core focal point of what the theme and message has been leading up to.
I wish there were more manga to read in this series! I absolutely loved watching Mio's journey, especially as someone who is also engaged and loves mermaids!
I feel like the story ended too soon, however, Mio and Prince Chika got the happy ending they both deserved in the end. Especially after all they had been through together. I was tearing up at the ending. It was so beautiful and a perfect fairy tale ending.
I love stories like this and they are so rare to find. This is my favorite book series I have ever read!!!

I totally forgot to leave a review for this a while ago. I really enjoyed this mini series, it was a cute read. Maybe I didn’t agree with the treatment of the main girl at times but have to acknowledge one of the plot points was a racial war between magical species. I am sucker for stories with mermaids in and this fit the bill at the time I wanted to enjoy a story like this 👍
I know I rated this 4 stars, but oh dear lord, this series could've used an extra volume cause despite being part of the "core" 5. Lou and Daibu don't do much outside of their introductory volumes.
With that said, it is a nice romp, and it has a nice message. Even though the ending felt rushed.
8/25 A happy finish to the series. It's a solid 3-Star series I guess, nothing too impressive but an interesting and relatively unique story with decent art.
