Fate brought them together.
Now it’s threatening to tear them apart.

As the last in a long line of demon slayers, Evie’s destiny is to end the war that has raged for centuries between humans and demons.

Lucas, the half-Shadow Warrior half-human who was sent to kill her, has betrayed his own Brotherhood and his family to fight alongside her.

With an army of unhumans on their tail, Evie and Lucas are forced into an uneasy alliance with a group of rogue Hunters who offer protection and the promise of answers.

As the past is untangled and the dark history of the Hunters revealed, Evie discovers that severing the realms is going to require a lot more than just fighting. It’s going to require a sacrifice – one that only she can make.

…More than realms will be severed.

3.5 out of 5 stars!

This was a fairly good sequel, despite my worries that the storyline would go off into my worst feared direction which it didn't! The events do take place straight after the ending of the first book Fated, so you will need to read that one before reading this one due to heavy spoilers. The premise for this series is set in the present day, where humans and demons are at war with each other. The main character Evie discovers a shocking secret about her heritage, which leaves her at huge risks from being captured and killed. She meets a range of characters but doesn't know who to trust. Her paths then cross with Lucas, a warrior from the brotherhood and someone who has been ordered to commit something super horrific. The pacing was fine throughout and there was plenty of action to keep me interested in reading on. But overall, I just thought there was something a little bit missing from the story. The romance was quite predictable for me personally. But I do hope to read the next book in this series soon!

Alderson has again produced fast and fiery sequel in Severed. If you were suckered in by Fated, you honestly haven’t seen anything yet. Alderson in my eyes has quickly become the master of surprises; the sucker punches that came in Severed had me sitting in shock, left my mind reeling and had me wanting to jump up and down shouting how could you do this to me?

In Severed we are reunited with the unexpected pair of Lucas and Evie, after everything’s that’s gone down, they’re on the run with who knows how many unhumans after them. But that’s not the worst of it; they still need to find out about the prophecy and how they can bring an end to the chaos. But in the process they end up discovering something they never expected.

I can’t believe it was nearly a year ago when Alderson introduced us to Lucas and Evie, after devouring Hunting Lila a few weeks before I didn’t think any other character could compare. But being back with Lucas and Evie has made me realise just how much of an impression they had made the first time around. I was beyond excited to dive into their world of unhumans again, to see Evie and Lucas fighting their way through everything thrown at them, would their relationship be strong enough this time? I liked the different sides we got to see of Lucas and Evie in Severed. Evie has definitely grown up loads after first discovering she was a hunter. With their lives constantly on the line, she was strong and always ready to go into battle. With so many lives lost previously Evie didn’t want to put anyone else in the same position and so quickly became aware of the risks she had to take, she didn’t dither about in the slightest. In comparison Lucas I was a bit unsure about at first, he had lost the brotherhood and had every single unhuman after him and Evie after what he had done. It took a while for the Lucas I‘d become to love from Fated to come through, but once he was back, boy I couldn’t endure to part from him. Severed also enabled us to delve into a more fragile side of both characters, we were able to learn their hopes and what worried them the most; not having the other are around. It did often result in some heartbreaking scenes which left me with a lump in my throat. But Alderson also takes their relationship a whole another notch, be prepared to swoon girls!

I was also slightly worried that the gap left by characters from Fated; Neena and Risper would be extremely had to fulfil. But my worrying was totally uncalled for as Alderson provides us with new characters which I enjoyed even more and I’m sure will leave a great impression on everyone as they did with me. Cyrus is definitely a character to look at for, he really had made me confused at first, but his cheeky demeanour and totally uncalled for comments around Evie and Lucas had me cracking up. He’s a big character who creeped his way in and had me longing for him and his witty remarks when he never was around.

Despite Severed taking a more serious tone than Fated, Alderson weaved humour into the book well, that I found myself with a huge smile on my face when it was an inappropriate moment. Severed in my eyes is one hell of a follow up to Fated. Fans of Alderson’s work won’t be disappointed, but just be warned after finishing the last page you will be dying to get your hands on Shadowed!

Severed is the highly awaited sequel to Sarah Alderson’s Fated and she really doesn’t disappoint with this exciting and enthralling instalment.

Starting straight after the events in Fated, Evie and Lucas are now on the run and are trying to seek shelter. They end up at Lucas’s sister while they try and find a group of rogue hunters, who they believe can help them win the battle against the Brotherhood. While training with the hunters, Evie finds out that in order to end the battle, a big sacrifice needs to be made – by her, and it’s one that she and Lucas never saw coming. Are they destined to be torn apart or can they fight fate once and for all?

I’ve been eagerly awaiting this sequel for ages and I have to say I was pretty worried it wouldn’t happen seems as it book two and three wasn’t picked up by Simon & Schuster. Thankfully, Sarah made sure Evie and Lucas’s story was not left unfinished and now we have Severed! Yay, thanks Sarah! I fell in love with this world the first time around and now I’ve fell in love with it all over again. It has such amazing characters, an amazing story and a fantastic forbidden love story and you know I’m a sucker for that. Really what more could you want from a story?

Evie grows so much this time around, she’s determined to fight back and prove herself that she can take down the Brotherhood – even though she does have mini breakdown where she feels like she can’t. However, she changes and becomes stronger and faster and realises that she was always destined to become what she is. And Lucas, strong, brave, gorgeous Lucas that will do anything in the world to protect Evie – even if that means putting his own life in danger. I adore the relationship between these two and if anything, it intensifies even more in the book. I also really loved the new secondary characters, Lucas’s sister, Cyrus and the gang made this book so entertaining and I’m hoping we haven’t seen the last of them.

Severed really does provides everything for every reader. It has action, romance, heart-warming scenes to dangerous scenes and that ending - oh my gosh, I didn’t see it coming! I literally was like “Sarah did not just do that?!” but she did, and it’s left me wanting, no – needing – more of Evie and Lucas. I’m hoping the release of book three comes around quickly because I need to know there will be a happy ever after for these characters.

A huge thank you to Sarah Alderson for giving me the opportunity to review this book.

You see, this is what I love on a series: for the second book to be better than the first one; for it to grab my attention, to keep me on the edge of the seat waiting to see what new surprise will come next; for it to break my heart a bit, to make me feel all different emotions from happiness to despair; I want a book to make me laugh and cry, to hate it and love it with passion, to say: “wow, this was such a great story!”

And “Severed” is that and maybe even more.
Where the hell’s the next book?

My piece of advice: you should stay away from spoilers before reading it. It won’t be any fun to know things ahead. Don’t worry, this review is free of those.

No one told me that it would leave me breathless, no one told me how amazing this story can be. You know I didn’t love the first book, I didn’t even know how much or if I wanted to read the next book, but when I did, it got my full attention from the first page to the last one and then through the preview from book 3.

And damn I wanted more, I couldn’t believe where this story got to take us.
It is insane, awesome and awful in the same time. It’s creepy how much I enjoy to read something able to break all freaking clichés, something that can shake my world so badly.

I applause you for your courage, dear Sarah, not many writers are capable of doing what you did with this book. It vas brave and even though if it killed me a bit, I can’t wait to see what comes next, how things will get solved, how will we be able to put our hearts back together. Because I tell you this, you better have a great excuse for what happened there, I wand a mind-blowing ending to this series to make up for my heartbreak.

Should I tell you more about the story?

I don’t think so. All you need to do is grab the book and read about these great characters that are so much stronger now, about this romance that is so much more believable, about the action that is so much more addictive and for the turnarounds that are so much more heart-warming and heart-wrenching and heartbreaking and oh, my.. I need to stop and take a long breath now. Breathe in, breathe out. I still can’t believe that happened. It did though, right? Oh my!

Anyways, I loved the new addition in terms of characters: Cyrus was what I’d want a main character to be – charming, ironic, sweet, funny, brave, good looking, noble. And I could go on and one.. don’t worry there was no love triangle and I am grateful, because I have a little crush on Cyrus and I would hate to have to fight Evie for him.. No need for that though, as she pretty much in love with Lucas and only Lucas.

So.. my review makes no sense whatsoever, I just can’t talk much about this story without spoiling it, and I deeply regret that many people will find out about what happens in the story before reading it. In my opinion you should just stay away from spoilers and read it on your own.. believe me, it’s better that way!

All in one, I don’t really know one thing that I didn’t like about this story.
Yes, miss Alderson, I loved your book to pieces. Congrats, you seem to get better with every story!

Happy midnight reading!

Cover:
I love how it still has the same theme as Fated! The simplicity of the cover really reflects the book and I like how there's the contrast between the dark and light colour in the background.

Story:

What does it take to sever the realms?

When I first read Fated, I longed for its sequel already. I really hoped that the rights for the sequel was picked by Simon & Schuster so we can read the sequel! But, I was surprised to find an email from Sarah mid-October with an attached file of Severed. I was ecstatic. Even though Sarah decided to self-publish Severed, I was glad that we still got the chance to read the sequel, and Severed does not disappoint.

I loved being back in the world of Fated. But in Severed, the stakes are higher. Even though Lucas and Evie are together, there are still things yet unresolved. What about Evie's prophecy of the White Light? Is it her responsibility to fulfill it? I am glad that the actions I truly enjoyed in the first book was still in the sequel. The story plot was full-on action, sometimes quite intense and also romantic. While I might have loved the first book better, I still loved Severed too. Now here comes the bit where I have to cry and sob and tear my hair. Dear Sarah, I love you but OH WHY DID YOU HAVE TO END THE BOOK THAT WAY? That's all I'm going to say and I won't elaborate on how Sarah ended the book because it's SPOILERY!

Characters:
Usually, I get on to Evie first but this time, let me introduce you to CYRUS! The new character in Severed! YAY! There is no love triangle in this book since Evie is absolutely devoted to Lucas but she can't blame me if I'm falling for Cyrus. He's AMAZING. If I was introduced to Cyrus first before Lucas, I might have loved him more than Lucas. But since Lucas' brooding but surprisingly sweet attitude is too hard to resist, I am still in love with him! We are also introduced to Lucas' sister in this book and yeah, I can still say Lucas is the better sibling. No offense, Flic. There's also Vero and Ash, Cyrus' companion who totally rocks. Overall, all the characters are amazing and I'm glad we get to read about Evie and Lucas again!

Overall:
Miss Fated? While you might be thinking of a re-read, here's something better! A SEQUEL! Severed is the kick-ass sequel to Fated. Sarah's writing never ceases to take us into a world full of actions, romance and oh , more ACTIONS! I'm still confused whether I should thank Sarah for writing a sequel or to to cry for the way Severed ends but I guess I'll settle with 'I CAN'T WAIT FOR BOOK 3!'

Thank you Sarah Alderson for the review copy!

Even though I couldn't put this book down while I was reading it, continuing on with trepidation at times, as to what was coming next, I feel the cliffhanger just took all the goodness out of it and left me with a bad taste in my mouth.

I found the first half to be ticking over with nothing too exciting going on but I just enjoyed being back in this world with Evie and Lucas. After the battle at the end of Fated in which the brotherhood were wiped out, they are on the run and head to Lucas' sister's apartment in LA. Finding themselves not welcome there, and with no where else to go, they set out to find a group of rogue hunters who've been killing unhumans and who them hope will help them find the rest of the prophecy, and introducing us to an awesome new character, Cyrus. A larger than life hunter who likes the girls and collects notches on his bedpost.

At the opening of this book, I felt that both characters appeared quite different than I remembered them from Fated. Evie appeared very meek and timid while Lucas came across as standoffish. I know they had been through a lot with the fight but I would have expected them to pull together more, whereas for a time, I thought they were coming apart. They do both thankfully, get back to their old selves.

The character who probably stood out the most for me in this book had to be Cyrus, the rogue hunter. He had a smart ass mouth, a deep hatred of unhumans and a liking for the ladies, constantly making snide remarks to Lucas and coming onto Evie. At first, I actually found him quite annoying but very quickly found myself really warming towards him. Especially when he proved how chivalrous and heroic he could really be.

Overall, this was an enjoyable read with interesting well written characters and world building that I couldn't fault. But the cliffhanger......for me this overshadowed everything. So be warned.

WHAT THE HELL DID I JUST ... I CAN'T ...LUCAS.. VICTOR YOU DICK,..

HOW COULD YOU DO THIS TO ME.. I CAN'T..

I JUST... EVERYTHING IS BLURRY... I THINK I AM GOING TO FAINT..

When I read the words "the end" I was seriously about to bitch slap someone in the face. THE ENDING WAS SO FUCKING UNEXPECTEDDDDD. sorry about the rude words, but right now i am not in the mood to be polite.

This killed me.

No correction this slaughtered me.

My heart already couldn't take it after Cyrus's sacrifice and then it comes to this.

I'll start by saying I love Sarah Alderson, everytime I read one of her books, it's like something is drawing me in making sure I read every single page in one sitting. It's basically an addiction. And with this book, it is like being addicted to the smell of a cigarette... sure it smells nice, but it's a killer. In this case, A KILLER OF MY HEART. (and no I am not being overdramatic)

Cyrus.. that boy, I think I fell in love with him from his first appearance in that club. His arrogance, self importance, know-it-all, cocky attitude had me at hello. He brought such happiness and delivered the funniest lines in this book that his parts were simply just a joy to read. Even though he was only introduced in this book I well and truly fell for his character. The attraction between Evie and him (though only physical) was sizzling to watch. When he sacrificed himself I couldn't stop crying.. I mean I knew as soon as he didnt know who who his father was, that he was a full blood. But it still didnt make it hurt any less. The only complaint is the name Cyrus.. I mean it just reminds me of an old person (but then again so does my name, so really no complaints)

The love Evie and Lucas shared. Damn it where can I find me some Lucas. I was so excited they finally did "the deed".. yeah we all know what I am talking about. IT'S ABOUT TIME. I was actually going to pull at someones hair if Alderson had kept it strictly PG. Although, I wont lie I get annoyed that in books the characters only want to have sex when they sense their impending demise fast approaching. But then again, if i knew my life was going to end, I too would want to have an enjoyable last hoorah before death... but this is me going off topic.. back on track..

But the moment that literally made me want to die, was that last chapter. I THOUGHT IT WAS OVER. I freaking thought that there would be a happily ever after, and that Lucas and Evie could walk off into the sunset. BUT NO. Seriously he had to DIE ! FUCKING DIE VICTOR DIE DIE DIE ! What was the point of all that, if he was to just die. Seriously, what WAS THE POINT. Who cares if the world is saved and would not go down in chaos and hell if that means Lucas died.. Seriously, I'd choose Lucas over the world any day.. poor Evie. When I read the words "the end" I actually thought that was it.

BUT THANK THE PERSON UP IN HEAVEN I flipped the next page, and saw that there would be another book.. because this "third" book has given me hope. Alderson cant just kill off a major character like that.. NO NO Evie will some how find a way to bring him back. Come on Evie you can do it! But let me tell you if he doesnt come back and she falls for some other guy, I will literally rip the next book up and feed it to my dog. (Not that I have one, but my next door neighbour has two massive annoying man eating dogs)

So there better be a freaking rainbow with a pot of gold and happiness at the end of this series or I will not be a happy customer. I give it a 4.5/5! (-0.5 for Lucas, but I have a faint inkling it wont be the last we see of his gorgeous character)

Here is some great quotes from the book:

‘It’s over,’ he heard Flic say.
He turned to face her.
‘It’s far from over,’ he whispered hoarsely.

‘Don’t ever let anyone tell you chivalry is dead, OK?’ he said hoarsely.
‘What?’ she asked, her own voice husky.
‘I’ve led a charmed life,’ Cyrus answered.

‘What kind of spell does she have over you?’ he heard Flic shout to his back.
‘I don’t know,’ he answered truthfully as he closed the door behind him.

Severed, book 2 in the Fated series took awhile to warm up, but at the halfway mark it packed a punch.

Evie and Lucas are on the run trying to uncover the prophecy of the White Light. Looking for clues, and for people to help give them clues, slows the story down in the beginning as we are introduced to a new cast of characters. Once we meet the bedpost-notching, rogue hunter, Cyrus, things pick up a bit with Cyrus' larger than life ego and one-liners. He swaggers into the hate-to-love, quick-witted villain role vacated by Shula, though he's on Evie's side. Alderson posted on the interwebs that Cyrus' entry does NOT (thank goodness) indicate a love triangle. Though he does bring tension to Lucas and Evie's love story.

Lucas and Evie spend a lot of inner monologue on the themes of fate, destiny and sacrifice, which was really interesting. But still, I wanted more action. Particularly from Evie. She's set up as this strong female -physically as well as personality-wise. But she only throws a couple of punches in this story. She was very often standing behind Lucas or Cyrus during battles, but there were indications that she could put them both on the floor with her new-found powers.

I was also very excited about the love scene in this decidedly YA work -though maybe it should be cast into the blooming New Adult genre. The love scene is, in fact, there. But don't blink, or you might miss it! Gosh! Does that make me a perv that I wanted to read more about these kids doing the wild thing?

As I indicated, the second half of this book was more to my speed when the action and the ticking-time-bomb shifted into gear. The storyline of this sequel is resolved and then a serious, SERIOUS, complication is immediately introduced for the final book in this planned trilogy. I totally appreciated that Alderson made sure to close one door before opening another. And if you are a fan you will likely shout loud enough for her to hear you in her cottage in Bali with respect to the shape and size of the new door she presented. Personally, I couldn't get past the closing of the initial door. I was unprepared for it. Its completely plausible what happened, but I felt M. Night Shamalyan blindsided by it. Alderson could have put some sneaky hints in there so that when we reflected back on the entire story, we picked up on them and realized what a genius she is. But there were no sneaky hints...at least not that I saw.

Still, I suspect she has something up her sleeve with these two doors opening and closing and some potentially tricky wording in the White Light Prophecy that we think has been resolved. Or has it...dunh dunh dunh!

I can't breathe. Seriously. It ended that way? THAT WAY?

Let's rewind a minute. So we pick up Evie's story as she and Lucas are on the run, unhumans chasing after them and questioning the meaning of a prophecy which includes Evie. I'm not giving ANYTHING else away in this review because I knew nothing going in and I loved every minute.

I love Angel and Buffy and Severed fits nicely into that kind of world. Sarah describes each character and scene so colourfully I honestly felt like I could see each scene played out before my eyes. And how I love this world she has created. The unhumans are vibrant and the hunters are imperfect. I would love to see Severed as a TV series.

The addition of Cyrus is a welcome one. He is full of character and he has some great lines, and I loved that Sarah didn't go down the traditional love triangle route that a lot of second books in YA trilogies do, she put her own spin on bringing a new (hot) male character into the fold. It kept me intrigued.

Where Severed really shines is in its action scenes and tender moments. They are compelling, exciting and sincere and I loved every bit of it. Even with an ending which tore my heart out and shred it to pieces.

It's not even a question- I need the 3rd one. NOW.

So it's no secret that I'm a massive fan of everything that Sarah Alderson writes and I loved Fated when I first read it last year. At the time I had high hopes for it to turn into a series so I couldn't have been more excited when I found out that Sarah had written two more books about Evie and Lucas. Anyone who enjoyed Fated will be pleased to know that Severed is even better - there is more action, more intrigue, more danger and of course more romance. We also get to meet some interesting new characters at the same time as we're catching up with some of the ones we've already met.

Severed picks up the story just after the ending of the previous book, Lucas and Evie went against everything they were taught in order to be together and are now on the run. It wasn't so hard for Evie to choose Lucas as she has only recently learnt that she is a hunter and she has very good reasons not to trust the people who were keeping secrets from her for her entire life. It has been much harder for Lucas to leave behind the other unhumans that he grew up with though, people who he considers his friends are now treating him like the enemy but he can't walk away from Evie and the feelings he has for her. The two of them aren't strong enough to fight a whole army on their own though and end up turning to a group of rogue hunters for help. There is understandable tension between Lucas and the hunters but they'll have to learn to trust each other if they are going to stop everything that is coming for them.

Evie has been through a lot since she the night she was attacked by unhumans and discovered her hunter heritage, she has been betrayed by the people she should have been able to trust most, she has found with love with someone who is supposed to be her enemy and now she is dropped back into the middle of the action as both sides seem to want something that only she can give them. One of the things I liked most about her in the first book was the way she didn't take what anyone told her at face value, she always went out of her way to verify things for herself and make sure her information was correct. I'm pleased to say that this is something that continues into this book and she has only grown stronger and more determined as she learns more about the supernatural world. Her relationship with Lucas did start very quickly but they spend more time getting to know each other in this instalment and they work really well as a team, ultimately they both respect each other though which is something I think is really important. I do love the romance between them and they make such a cute couple!

I already loved Lucas but I now have an even bigger crush on him than before. He is so caring towards Evie and he constantly puts her needs and safety before his own. It took a lot of guts for him to go against his upbringing and realise that Evie wasn't a normal hunter and he earned my respect for that. Now that we've got to know him a bit better he doesn't have quite such a bad boy feel to him and I think that's mainly because he's no longer keeping secrets from Evie about who and what he is. That doesn't make him any less sexy though and these two have great chemistry. Lucas has a bit of competition when they meet up with the rogue Hunters though, new boy Cyrus seems quite determined to take his place in Evie's affections. Cyrus can be very arrogant and was at times a little overbearing but I loved the way he constantly teased Evie and added a lighter note to the story. As much as he comes across as a bit of a playboy I think deep down he is actually quite a sweet guy and although he didn't overtake Lucas in my affections I did develop a bit of a crush on him too. You're just going to have to read the book to see who Evie likes best though!

Severed is a fantastic follow up to Fated and was full of edge of your seat action. The plot is fast paced and fraught with danger and OMG that ending was a shocker for more than one reason! I literally could not believe what happened and I still can't believe that Sarah Alderson could leave us with that cliffhanger! The only reason I'm going to forgive her is that the third and final book Shadowed is due to be released early in 2013, if I had to wait a whole year to find out what was going to happen next I would have cried. I literally can't wait to get my hands on Shadowed, as soon as I get hold of a copy it will be jumping right to the top of my to read pile because I just have to know how Evie's story is going to end. If you haven't started this series yet then I'd highly recommend reading the books in order but they're a must for any YA urban fantasy fan who likes action packed stories with dangerous demons and more than a little romance.

I really enjoyed it but the end? heart breaking! such a mean cliffhanger... i don't know what I'll do until "Shadowed" comes out.

Most of the book was pretty boring, the protagonists just wandered around acting like idiots and twiddling their thumbs for most of it. They really ought to have killed Victor by now. They've had plenty of opportunities. It wouldn't have even necessarily had to be about revenge, just about making sure a serial killer doesn't walk free. Nobody else was going to bring him to justice, it's not like they could lock him up in jail instead. Killing him is the only solution. Letting him live means he has the opportunity to kill more innocent people. Seems like the only reason they didn't kill him is because he's human and not a demon (even though demons are just as sapient as humans and not inherently evil the protagonists seem to have a much easier time killing them). Or more accurately, the only reason they haven't is because the author needed him around to cause problems. Almost all of the book was filler, and the rest was plot twists.

This book reminds of the "Twilight series." Lots of similarities with the author Stephanie Meyer. Least of my favorites.

I get to cut .5 for that ending. We don't deserve to have that happens to us. Sarah you cannot just decide to break our hearts that way its not fair.
I am not going to say anything about this book. I really hope the fact that shadowed is releasing in early 2013 isn't a joke, I have no idea what to do right now.
I am so heart broken.

After mourning for a while

Review
I had read Fated not realizing that the sequel was not available yet and when I realized there wasn’t more Lucas and Evie to read I went into frenzy. Then I realized I only had to wait a month or so for the sequel so I calmed down a bit. Even though the last book didn’t end on a cliff hanger I felt as though it did because I had fallen so head over heels in love with the book that I wasn’t ready to let it go.

So I stalked Severed until it finally came out. I may not have waited as long as most people but believe me when I say it was long enough for me. I read this book so quickly I am not sure I did anything else. Right from the start to the end I was constantly on the edge.

The author doesn’t skip a beat and dumps us right where Fated ended, with Evie and Lucas on the run from the brotherhood and the hunters. Evie still has to come to term with being the White Light. She isn’t sure what she has to do but she doesn’t like the fact that she doesn’t have a choice. Lucas wants to help her fulfill her prophecy but at the same time protect her.

If you thought Fated was amazing… Severed blew minds. Well at least it blew mine. The first one was merely an introduction into the world of Fated, the second one was full of action. At every corner there is a new challenge awaiting them and Evie and Lucas fight through everything together. In this book we can see their relationship strengthen. They grow stronger and learn from their mistakes, they don’t doubt each other, they only want to protect one another.

Both the characters develop and learn from their past mistakes and become each other’s rocks. They don’t just change all of a sudden, like in Lucas’s case he needs to let go of his prejudices but he learns. There aren’t any personality transplants because no one can just change over time.

Also I am going to use this quote to describe Lucas, I would have used it in my review of Fated but well the quote is from Severed and I really need to use this quote. Like right now.

'What is it about him? What is it that makes you females of all the species lose the plot so entirely?'

I’ve had this quote for the past 3 months. I stare at it every single day because seriously, I am over my head in love with Lucas.( *shies away*, I know there are a lot of guys I am in love with.. leave me alone okay?? I am just an innocent creature)

One of the things I am really happy about that is despite all the pressure one her, Evie still manages to retain her wit, she doesn’t let all the things going around weaken her.

Oh and I didn’t mention Cyrus. He was fun to have around. Lucas as we know is our serious guy, he may crack the occasional joke but he has too much on his mind to actually let loose properly. Cyrus though, he is the funny guy always saying the hilarious things to lighten the mood.

This book isn’t for the light hearted. After finishing the book I hate Sarah so much because I felt so heart broken, but then I started making my own theories and she announced that Shadowed would be released early in 2013 (now at the end of March) so I was able to forgive her (I love her too much to hate her anyway.. it has hard). But all fans of Fated, read this. I command you to and if you haven’t read Fated, what the hell are you waiting for? The apocalypse? (OMG I’VE ALWAYS WANTED TO SAY THAT)

P.S. I didn’t give this a five because I was really upset about the ending alright? I think I worried the hell out of everyone with my behavior.

Quick recap of Fated
In Fated we are introduced to Evie Tremain, who suddenly learns that she is the last in a line of demon Hunters. Unfortunately she finds this out after a group of them try to kill her, including Lucas Gray who is a half-human Shadow Warrior. Not only does Evie discover a heritage she knew nothing about, she finds out that there is an important prophecy surrounding her. While the Hunters will do anything to make sure she fulfills her purpose, the demons will do everything they can to stop her.

When Lucas is sent back to spy on Evie and eventually kill her, things don't go as planned - for either of them. At the end of Fated, Evie and Lucas have escaped both the demons and Hunters, neither of which is happy that they are working together. Severed picks up right where the first book ends, beginning with Evie and Lucas on the run.

On Severed
In Severed Sarah Alderson delivers another action-packed read that is fast-paced, romantic and surprising. The book takes place in L.A. and the grittiness of the city is a great backdrop for danger that Lucas and Evie feel crowding in on them.

An interesting Fate vs. Free Will debate comes into play in Severed as Evie tries to discover the rest of the prophecy surrounding her. Do you make your own destiny? Can you change what’s fated? Or will what is supposed to happen take place anyway, no matter what you do to try to stop it? There are no simple answers to these questions, and I was really intrigued by how they played out throughout this book. I'm also eager to find out how they are answered in the rest of the series.

Severed introduce several new characters, both demons and Hunters - Flic and Jamieson as well as Cyrus, Vera and Ash. Alderson has called Cyrus her favorite male character since Alex from Hunting Lila. He is attractive, arrogant and good at what he does (you'll have to read the book to find out what that is). But he also has more depth to him than he shows on the surface. You don't want to miss him and the other new cast members.

As Evie, Lucas and the others travel through L.A. and the prophecy becomes clearer, we learn more about the seven demon realms and the demons themselves. However the demon mythology is still the part of the story that I am the least clear about. I realize that the two narrators of this story - Lucas and Evie - have only lived in the human realm, but I'd love some more details about the realms and how they operate. I hope we get more about them in the third book.

I really like the way that Alderson writes her stories, and especially her relationships. She does not give excessive information, or endless descriptions. But that makes the information we do get feel more important somehow. Severed is a great example of the fact that you don’t have to be graphic to be steamy. There is a burning intensity underlying Evie and Lucas’ relationship that I really loved. It is tentative in many ways because they are still very much getting to know each other. But it is also solid. One of my favorite aspects of Alderson's romances is the fact that they are built on mutual respect. Evie and Lucas are protective of each other. They will both do anything to keep the other safe, and that causes some problems for them. Especially, when 'protection' means hiding plans from each other. Although I understood their decisions, it still frustrated me.

Severed is exactly how I felt when I finished this book. That end. WOW. I’m just glad that the third book in the series Shadowed comes out early 2013. And I’m going to remain hopeful about it.

I liked this more than I thought I would — it was a quick, easy read and the characters were mostly tolerable.
The plot wasn't very exciting though - Lucas and Evie spent the majority of the book running around trying to find safety or trying to gather more information on the prophecy about Evie. I thought most of the book was pretty pointless, it was only at the end when things of importance happened and when the story actually kicked off.
Evie and Lucas were okay, I didn't mind them even though at times they were dull. I liked the addition of Cyrus, he was funny and I wouldn't have minded him and Evie getting together because at times they had more chemistry than Evie/Lucas. I wasn't quite as fond of the other new characters - Issa and Flic were bitches especially to Evie even though she'd done nothing wrong. They acted like she forced Lucas to fall in love with her. I hate it when female characters act bitchy to the heroine because a guy they know has fallen in love them and of course they think the heroine isn't good enough for the hero and so the heroine has to prove to the heroes friends and family how awesome she is and how much she wuvs the hero..Ugh. It pisses me off that the hero is never judged by any of the heroines friends..the only time he has to contend with the heroines friends is when one of them is secretly in wuv with her. I hate how heroes never have to prove themselves to anyone, not even the reader yet the heroines have to win over everyone because they're never good enough. I despise that the heroes can get away with murder, lying, cheating and general evilness by giving a lame, half arsed insincere apology whereas if a heroine so much as looks at someone the wrong way, they're crucified and never forgiven. What's up with that?
Anyway, the ending was pretty good, I have a feeling that Lucas will turn up in the next book, authors aren't bwave enough to kill of their only love interest. Because in their worlds a heroine can't have a happy ending without her going off into the sunset with a guy — they don't seem to realise that heroines playing the field and being able to sow their wild oats is actually the best HEA ever.

I have to admit, this book wasn't everything I had hoped it would be. I love Sarah Alderson's writing, don't get me wrong, and I absolutely loved her books Hunting Lila and Losing Lila, and of course I read Fated before reading this one. I just thought there was a lot more than there needed to be, like this book was trying to hard to be something it wasn't. It was still very well-written, as always, but there was something missing, and I still don't know what it is. It's not the romance, that's for sure. But...something. Maybe I'll figure it out later. The ending, too, was just awful to read. It was fast-paced and thrilling, but what happened was just too much to read all at one time. I'm pretty sure I went back and re-read it about five times until it finally sunk in. If there's another book after Severed, then...this person...had better come back. If not, I don't even want to know how that would end up for a few of the characters. Not pretty is my guess.

Anyways, this book wasn't bad, but it just wasn't the best second installment in a series. I know how hard it can be to follow up on something and make everyone happy with it. I do. I've tried my hand at writing, even though it doesn't end well. But considering all the expectations Alderson had to live up to, I think she did fairly well, so kudos.

Severed is the perfect sequel to Fated, and I'm sure that it will satisfy all fans! Be prepared for the same heart-stopping action, mysteries and the epic romance that we all love so much.

In Severed, Evie and Lucas are on the run from their lives to fight the evil that threatens the world. On their way, they encounter a group of rogue unhumans and have no choice but to join them because they offer some much-needed help. As Evie discovers more about what is happening to the realms, she is forced to make an incredibly difficult decision that no one should be forced to make.

I had a lot of fun reading Severed because of the gripping plot and the awesome new characters that were introduced! I fell head over heels for the charming, yet cheeky, Cyrus the Hunter. He lightened up the book and made me smile multiple times because of his witty replies and adorable smiles. I'm sure that most readers will love him, too.

While I may have hoped for something between Cyrus and Evie, I knew that Lucas was the only one for her. Overprotective, strong and loving, Lucas was simply a sweet guy to read about (when he's not battling monsters, of course).

The ending was just... Ahh, it's so complicated to put into words because I felt a rush of emotions slam into me all at once; the pain from losing a loved character, the confusion from why the book had to end, etc. I can't wait to find out what's to happen next in the series because it's just so damn breath-taking.

If you've not read anything by Sarah Alderson then make sure you check out the first book, Fated, and her Hunting Lila books.

Alright, I'm just going to say this up front: I hated the ending. I was so upset I was reconsidering finishing the series.

Also, death is imminent in this story. It's like a constant lingering reminder, the invisible force/fear resulting in such entertaining & thrilling action sequences. Because like Fated, Severed followed through and even stepped it up a notch with the action scenes. I loved the confrontations and the new rogue hunter characters that were introduced. I even liked Cyrus. A lot. And I was even hoping for a love-triangle to develop. Not the cheesy, makes-me-wanna-puke kind of nauseating and predictable triangle, but a tasteful one making us question, fate v. free will.

The White Light prophecy is fulfilled in this sequel; Also, Lucas and Evie solidify their relationship, and their bond goes beyond mere love, it's a fate they both choose.

But, like I said: death is imminent, whereby certain characters in this book die. I'm holding out hope for the beloved character(s) to make a comeback in book 3. Otherwise, I'm still kind of in shock and a bit disappointed.

Overall, Severed delivers the action and fast paced development of the plot, and the White Light Prophecy. Lucas and Evie don't spend as much time together as I hoped for, but their romance is my favorite aspect of the series.

I'm hoping somehow, Lucas and Evie get their HEA in the next book.

*2.5*

I left way to long to finally start this book. I read the first book, Fated, about 2-3 years ago and could remember hardly anything which happened. I couldn't remember any of the characters, save for Lucas and Evie, any of the plot or any of the background. Due to this I had a difficult time getting into the story and feel I would have enjoyed it more if I had read this book sooner or re-read the first book.

Due to this I feel I cannot make an unbiased judgement on this book as I couldn't fully appreciate this book for what it could have been and skimmed the last 20%. I do however feel strongly about the ending. The climax to this book was quite exciting (definitely the best part), that scene in the basement was intense but I feel the ending itself was a cop-out on Alderson's part. I feel the story should have ended with the chapter before last and left an opened ended story for the last book. Following the events at the end of this book I was left rather disappointed and in no rush to pick up the last book, although I assume I will at some point (and I won't leave it's long as last time), as I cannot see where the author will continue to develop the story in line with reader interest. I have read a few books by Sarah Alderson in the past which I have really enjoy and was left disappointed and deflated by this one.

Well, Severed was considerably better than Fated. And we were introduced to Cyrus. And, let me tell you, Cyrus is pretty awesome. But if I'm completely honest . . . I'm glad I grabbed this copy of Severed when it was free for Kindle because I wouldn't have paid full price for it. Sad, yes, but true, because I LOVE Sarah Alderson. I really, really do.

I mean, after the ending of Severed . . . I'm definitely going to pick up Shadowed. Definitely. Because Lucas is amazing. And Evie is pretty awesome too. As well as all of the other characters. So, I like it enough to keep reading now.

Don't let my opinion warn you off of this series, though! It's good, but I'm comparing it to her other books and to what I'm looking for in a story. Read it, though, because there's a high chance you won't be disappointed!

I was so looking forward to reading this, but unfortunately I wasn't as impressed as I'd thought I'd be. The ending left me feeling both sad and annoyed. I just couldn't believe how she ended it?? With not even a string of hope of something maybe not being exactly how it may seem (I don't want to say what in case you haven't read it and I spoil the ending).
As it has the most depressing ending ever I could only award it 3 stars. I don't know if I'm going to read the next one.
