Falling #1

Enamorarse

Rate this book

When D. W. Marchwell is not teaching future generations the wonders of science, he can usually be found hiking, writing, riding horses, trying new recipes, or searching for and lovingly restoring discarded antique furniture. A goofy and incurable romantic, D.W. admits that his stories are inspired by actual events and has a soft spot for those where boy not only meets boy but also turns out to be boy's soul mate. After almost fifteen years of working his way across Canada, D.W has finally found the perfect place to live at the foot of the Canadian Rockies. He still can't believe how lucky he is, and, as his grandmother taught him, counts his blessings every day.

This one was damn near perfect for me. I totally love Hank. So big and strong but with a heart as soft as marshmellow :p. The story was nicely paced, no jumping into bed as soon as they meet, but a build up of feelings and enotions. To me it was a romance book. Recomend to all looking for love before sex lol.

Sweet story with little angst or conflict, sort of surprising considering Hank went from straight to gay without even blinking. The MC's have an instant attraction and take time to build a friendship.
I liked the story, my only niggle were all the nicknames and how often 'uncut' had to be pointed out! ;)

What I love about D.W. Marchwell's work is the heart that goes into them. He literally had me gripping the edges of my laptop, breathless and heart pounding as I read much of the story. I alternated between that and sinking back in a sort of contentment.

Marchwell is a master not just of character but of character emotion. These people are real, and not contrived. He will make you care, and he will sweep you away on a great romantic ride and always bring you safely home. If you're hungry for a great m/m romance—and I mean romance—you've found it.

Okay, so there's cute cheesy and then there's ridiculous cheesy. Parts of this book were cute and parts were ridiculous, but it was nearly all cheesy. The ridiculousness got to the point a few times that I wanted to stop reading. I even closed the book and came here to add it to my dnf shelf, but all of the glowing reviews convinced me to keep at it. I suppose I'm glad I did, the end did earn the book another star from me, but I had to skim over a LOT (as in whoa, wait, they're doing it AGAIN? Is that physically possible?) of sex to get there.

Example of cute cheesy:
"I don't think anyone has ever seen the things in me that you do."
"You're who I've been waiting for, Henry Isaac Ballam."

That made me smile and go "aw."

Example of ridiculous cheesy:
"'I know this will sound funny.' Hank blushed and looked away. 'Since we're both men, but holding you, kissing you... it made me feel like a man. You made me feel like a man." (That right there is when I gave up and decided not to keep reading)

Some other things that came across as ridiculous to me:

All cheesy, sometimes cute, sometimes ridiculous. REALLY long. Way, WAY too much sex. I suppose I'm glad I finished it, but I'll not read it again.

As with his other works, Marchwell has given us a character study of two men who never thought they would end up with each other. Hank is one of those men who goes from woman to woman looking for that elusive spark that will make him feel complete. Scott is a musician - and a successful one at that - who has never felt the pull of true love.
When the two men meet under very odd circumstances, it is Scott who falls first, while Hank is trying to sort out his life and his feelings; he realizes eventually that he shouldn't have been looking for the 'right woman', but the 'right person'.
Scott knows he's falling for Hank and can't seem to stop himself, but never imagined that Hank would 'be there to catch him when he falls'.
In the background, there is Brian - Scott's brother - who is wrestling with his own past failed marriage and his current feelings for a co-worker - a female helicopter pilot (loved that part!).
There are many little plot twists that you think may lead somewhere, but as usual, Marchwell keeps you guessing. It's not any one person or group of people that threaten to keep them apart; I won't spoil the lovely ending to the story here, but you'll understand when you read it.
One piece of advice: When you read this story, read it knowing that it is a sweet romance between Scott and the two men who mean more to him than anything - his brother and Hank.
It is quirky and full of tender moments between Scott and his brother and Scott and Hank. I found it to be quite a departure from Mr. Marchwell's earlier works - especially Sins of the Father - and I kept having to remind myself that it was the same author who'd written both.
If you're thinking of reading this book, do not expect another intense character-driven story as Sins of the Father; if you do, you'll be disappointed.

In lieu of writing reviews – I’m taking an extended break – I decided to leave this list showing some of the reasons for the stars I’ve given to the stories I’ve read.

5 Stars – Given to stories that had me falling in love with the characters or stories where I hated the characters but the author had me hooked. For stories that had me so engaged in the plot I couldn’t put the book down and stories that either made me cry buckets and/or laugh until I cried. In short…. these ones rocked my world!!!
4 Stars– Given to stories that I REALLY, REALLY enjoyed reading but had me wishing for just a bit more.
3 Stars – Given to stories that I thought were well worth the read but they didn’t knock my socks off.
2 Stars – Given to stories that didn’t work for me. I couldn’t connect to the MCs or feel any sort of connection between them. I couldn’t follow the plot or there wasn’t a plot. Every so often one of these stories just needs work to fix what went wrong but mostly 2 star reads are stories that leave me wondering why I kept reading until the end.
1 Star - I RARELY give out 1 Star so when I do it means the story was a complete train wreck.

I know what I may love another reader may wonder what the hell I was thinking and vise versa but I’m okay with that!

Nothing wrong with this one but I found it hard to keep reading/listening. Charlie David did a good job (nothing spectacular) so the narration didn't detract from the story. I just wasn't invested in the story or the characters overly much. Gah, that sound harsh. Don't get me wrong, it's a sweet and sexy read; I think I'm either spoiled or over-sensitized to expect more drama than was prevalent here.

I loved the setting as well as the hella impressive attention to detail on all things logging related.
And I really did like Hank after listening to him grow & mature...but Scott was sort of - well, just meh. He was a little too perfect, and perfect is boring. Honestly, his brother Brian was more interesting.

Reading the reviews for this one I've discovered that evidently there's another book by this author that has more feelz/deeper characterization...so I'll give that one a try.

I really enjoyed this story ;) The MCs were very likable and it was very interesting to watch as they explored their feelings for each other. I loved how they not only fell in love and had hot sex, but from the very beginning it was clear that they had built mutual respect and were comfortable teasing each other without getting all angsty and self destructive and talked about their feelings and about their questions rather than to just assume the worst like in some other m/m romances.

I also greatly enjoyed the triangle dynamic between the straight brother (Bryan), who took care of his little brother when they had no one else, the gay brother Scott (or Scooter, Scrawny, Taz(manian devil) - loved the nick names)and his lover Hank, who works for his brother. A lot of interesting stuff there.

I thought the dramatic high point was very well written as well, even though it made me a bit queezy. I was on the edge of my seat and thought it was very effective ;)

I must admit though, that I felt there were too many loose ends for me and the novel took the easy way out too often. If it were just part of a series I would understand keeping so many interesting plots for later in the series, but there were a lot of storylines hinted at, but never explored (don't want to give too much away, but I mean things like Hank's family)

It seemed that the novel always made certain to keep away from any areas that could possibly bring problems. The people who weren't nice were removed from the story and never heard from again though it would have enriched the story to include what happened to them. The MCs never had to really test their relationship. The few people who knew they were together (3 people) accepted them rather quickly. It seemed they were in a bubble the whole time and I always find it interesting when the characters have to get out of the bubble and face reality. This didn't really happen. Danger, fear ... sure. But they didn't deal with Scott's band mates whom he simply left behind without looking back, didn't deal with Hank's family or with any people who might give them trouble for being gay or anything of that kind, really.

Soo ... I actually really liked the audio book while listening to it and would have readily rated it 4.5 stars directly afterwards, decided on 4.25 stars when I began writing up my review and after thinking about everything that was missing for me while writing it up, would almost like to give a 3.75 to the story. I guess 4 stars is the perfect rating. It is a comfort story I guess and as such doesn't go into any territory that might be dangerous to that feel. I did really enjoy it and have no problem recommending this book, but I just feel like it could have been much more ;)

Falling reminds me of football. My hubby and I will have plans but he will say "The game is almost over. Just two minutes left and then we can go." Forty-five minutes and a zillion commercials later the game is finally over. It is the same with this book. It shoots itself in the foot with the zillion sex scenes.

Sex in books should be hot and descriptive. Marchwell did a great job in that respect but came up short on making the reader care about Hank and Scott. Hank is a logger and spends most of his off hours chasing women. He is not happy with his life and seem to be running from or towards something. Scott has made a small fortune as a song writer and is proudly gay. The framework is there for a great book. We have two totally opposite men coming together, an attraction and then love. Unfortunately they spend so much time in bed we never get to fully know them or care about them.

There is as sequel and I am hoping it is less while being more.

Another good book from Mr. Marchwell. I wasn't really sure whether this was a 4-star or 5-star effort. I like the playfulness of the characters - not as heavy as Sins of the Father - but I missed the very in-depth look into Scott and Hank that we'd been treated to in Sins.
This is a very well-written story and one that you should read. But beware that it is a different kind of read.
I finally decided to give 5 stars because while I thought I would be treated to the same kind of heart-wrenching roller-coaster ride as Sins, I am still blown-away by the sweeping narrative.
Don't read this if you're tired; make sure you can appreciate the beautiful descriptions - both of scenery and characters.

Falling is a vey light-hearted love story that's also light on the angst and heavy-handed drama. Mr. Marchwell writes wonderfully full of life characters that play well off each other. His dialog is crisp and full of emotions, and it pulls the story along at a comfortable pace. I'm not a big fan of love-at-first-sight love stories and while the relationship between Hank and Scott certainly happened quickly, it didn't set off any red-flags for me.

Falling is a good read and I happily give it four stars.

Oh Hank was just perfect. Okay, he had some faults but the guy is just perfect in my book.

This was good paced love story with some pretty steamy bedroom (among other places) scenes. Aside from the couple of accidents there isn't a lot of angst over the relationship that builds between Scott and Hank. Recommended for those that want a romance that builds and engulfs them.

I just can't go further with this one. None of the interactions are making sense to me, it all seems so phony and just unrealistic (way more than normal for Romancelandia even). Tried to press on but when the gas jokes started, nope. Just nope.

At the second book by D.W. Marchwell I have to say that I like the style: very romantic stories, high emotional level, extraordinary characters in their ordinariness, and a bit of light mood to relieve the whole mix.

When the story starts, Hank, one of the two men, is not gay, or at least he believes not to be. If we need to force him into a definition, Hank is probably bisexual: he had an homosexual experience when he was still a teenager with one same age friend; then all his following experiences were with women, and, more or less, he has no trouble with that. Hank has not a problem with sex, he has a problem with life: he has not steadiness, no family and no weights to anchor him to the ground, and for a man who tip of trees for work, it’s not a good thing. Hank is unstable, and this is causing trouble both in his private than professional life.

When Hank’s boss, Brian, is injured when he is working with Hank, he has the chance to meet Brian’s brother, Scott. Younger than Brian and living in the city, at first Scott appears like a classy man who is not comfortable with their country life. But Scotty is also the only one to understand that Hank needs very little to be happy in life, a schedule, someone who tells him what to do, sleep, eat… and if, with that, it arrives also a lover, Hank is not the one to question if that lover is a man.

I like the “easy” feeling of the story: first Scotty who doesn’t put up a drama when he arrives at Brian’s hospital bed, and instead, he is the one who is willing to listen to Hank and to alleviate his remorse; then when it’s clear that something between Scotty and Hank is ready to blossom, they give it time to grew without blindly jumping in something to big for them. This lead to having sex more or less when 1/3 of the book is passed, but since the book is not short, the reader has plenty of time to enjoy it: waiting for sex is right, since it’s only believable that Hank needs time to accept his feelings for Scotty, and Scotty needs time to understand that he is not only an easy lay for Hank.

If the reader thinks that Hank is gaining everything from this relationship, and instead Scotty is renouncing to his city life and career, I think that is not exactly true. I had the feeling that Scotty was regretting his decision to leave the small town for the big city, and indeed Scotty is still a country boy; he is enjoying making music (Scott is a jazz composer), but not performing. Even if Scotty has a sparkling personality, it’s not on the stage that he is able to express it, he is more a behind the scene guy. So, I think that, where he is offering the stability and family that Hank lacks in his life, at the same time he is also “using” Hank to regain the life he has lost when he moved to the big city. In the end Scotty and Hank are perfect together since both of them found in each other what they were missing and desired from a partner.

Both characters are really nice, Scotty with his friendly behaviour and joy of life, I have always the feeling that he has a smile on his face, even in the most dramatic situation, and Hank with his old fashioned behaviour, like he is courting Scotty, even when he has still not realized that is love what he wants from him.

I will start out by saying this was warm and fuzzy and I needed it at the moment.

Scott lives in Toronto as a musician and bunks with his bandmates. He's successful (famous) as a songwriter. So when Kari (the helicopter pilot) to say that his brother Brian as been in an accident, Scott leaves it all behind to go back home to Duncan.

When he gets there he meets Kari for the first time and sees Brian and fears the worst. His dad died in a logging accident, so he knows all too well how much a danger the job is. While talking with Kari, he hears a commotion outside and sees his "old pals" Roddy and Hughey (co-workers of Brian). They are fighting with a man named Hank, who Scott immediately takes under his wing, because he knows accidents happen and Hank seems torn up about it.

From there, things get interesting. Hank is lonely. Never really fitting in or belonging and he actually feels for the first time he has a friend. I loved Hank and his "shyness". It made him all that more lovable that he wore his heart on his sleeve around Scott.

I won't get into any more, but can straight boy Hank be just friends with a gay musician from Toronto?

4.5 stars - This was so lovely! I can't believe I had it on my Kindle for sooooo long without reading it. I was actually deliberately looking for something romantic and low on the angst-scale, and when I checked out the reviews for this, it was pretty much full of people saying how sweet and angst-free it was. So I thought I might as well give it a go, and then at least it would be something to cross off of my ever-growing 'to be read' list. I am so glad I picked this one, because it was just SO CUTE AND PERFECT. The only reason it lost half a star was towards the end, when it actually became a little bit too romantic and sweet, and some of the sex scenes - while totally hot - felt a little bit repetitive. I know, I never thought I'd complain about that either. But seriously, it was such a lovely story. I loved Hank and his easy acceptance of his sexuality. There was none of the "but I don't want to be gay" or "what if people don't accept me" type of angst that there could have been, and I was really grateful for that. Scott and Hank did seem to fall in love rather quickly, but somehow it was believable. It just felt right and they were such an awesome couple.

Overall, a really great story if you're looking for something cute, romantic and very low on drama. :)

Scott's brother, Brian, is hurt in a logging accident so Scott rushes go his side. He meets Hank, who feels he is the blame and is being blamed by some of the crew. Scott feels an instant connection to Hank and takes him back to Brian's house to take care of him. Both are lonely and strike up an immediate friendship.

I loved this book. I really liked the writing style. The pacing was fairly slow to start but I really liked how their friendship was developed, even if it was only a matter of days. Scott is gay, never having had a relationship with a woman, and Hank has had a brief gay encounter in highschool and seems to maybe question the possibility of a gay relationship. Once they take the step into a physical relationship, they are hot-and-heavy ;0) if you like a smokin' hot book, and I do, this is one for you! They can spend an entire day in bed. They are a very physically loving couple. I don't agree with the review that they did it 6 times a night. 3 time along with other things which is no more than any other lucky person might get ;0)

A gripping, emotional, and very sweet book. Good times!

REVIEW OF AUDIOBOOK - AUGUST 18, 2013: 3 AND 1/5 STARS.
Narrator: Charlie David

Charlie David sounded better in HotHead but it could be a technical reason as his voice is the same (I did a sample check) in the other audiobooks he's done. I like his voice and am looking forward to the release of Who We Are (sequel to Bear, Otter & the Kid) even though I don't think anyone can beat Crisden.

David's voice isn't as clear in this audiobook as he is in Hot Head even though both were produced in 2012. It's slight, though, and I doubt if many people will notice. It does get better further into the story and didn't bother me much anymore.

The Story: Nothing remarkable - a book I'd forget once I'm done. It's sweet and straightforward. I don't regret reading and listening to it but I could have chosen a better book for my $9.79.

This is a feel good read, no epic drama's. a Bit corny but it worked for me.

Random Observation while Reading Contains Spoilers.

I loved the brothers relationship and their interaction early on, concern, love with just the right amount of teasing.

I like how for once in a out GFY type novel their is no dramatic drama. It was simple uncomplicated feelings, he may be confused about his sexuality but he damn well knows he wants Scott and shows it to him. Also their sex was no quicky where the "straight" guy does not reciprocate.

The sex scene were in too much of an abundance. Also the amount of times they both could get it up was unbelievable (this happens throughout the novel). They walk with constant hard-ons.

The camping was a fun and delightful scene.

Who does the cover model represent, he is to big to be Scott and to hairless to be Hank?

Hank never did get his nickname, probably part of the second novel.

I really enjoyed Hank and Scott's story. The setting seemed very real, though I don't know much about the industry, it seemed very true to life. I expected there to be more of an issue with Hank's sexuality, both with his own acceptance of it and with the acceptance of his coworkers but it was never really an issue. The hotness was off the chart - a lot of loving and very well written scenes too. Perhaps I might have liked a little more story and a little less sex (did I just say that?!?! Who am I?). The only other thing that shook me was how quickly they fell in love. I would be reading and it felt like time was passing at a longer rate but then the story would throw in a reminder that they'd only known each other two weeks. That aside, I really enjoyed this story and would recommend it.

D.W. Marchwell isn't one of my fave authors and probably won't ever be, but this is so far my favourite of the books I've read of his. It's a nice, solid romance story with likeable characters and good story pacing. I liked the pretty unusual job described here (logging), because it's something I've never read about before. I mean, obviously I knew that there are people cutting these trees, but I never really thought about what that entails, and it was interesting to get an idea about that! Hank and Scott fit together well despite all their differences and their chemistry is believable - even though their relationship is a pretty fast development.

It was an entertaining story that was pleasant to read - not particularly intense or outstanding, but nice. And sometimes a "just nice" book is exactly what you need and for those moments this story is perfect.

What a great read! At first I was surprised at how slowly everything moved, but I grew to appreciate the gradual way in which D.W. introduced me to the characters. The descriptions are beautiful and the characters real. This book is about Scott's and Hank's feelings for each other, how they realize that they have each fallen in love with the other man and how they deal with the real-life issues of wanting to build a life together. A beautiful book which I can really recommend.

A really good story with Mr. Marchwell's usual attention to detail. You won't like this story if you're expecting the same thing as his other stories.
I know he's a new writer - or at least he is to me - and this might explain his 'experimenting' a little with plot and arc, etc. It doesn't take anything away from the story, but my point is that you'll need to clear your head of his other works before reading this one.
It's different and it's a fantastic story.

I disagree with Stacey's review. It was obvious to me that Scott cared, that was shown as he arrived in the hospital; of course there was worry, but he was probably distracted by the fact that Kari was in her brother's life and shared the information that his brother would be fine. I don' think you read closely enough. I'm surprised at the two low reviews about this book; maybe you were tired?
This is another excellent, sweet love story.

This one was extremely disappointing for me. I enjoyed the characters, but the middle 80% of the book was nothing but sex scene after sex scene after sex scene. I got it aleffingready! They enjoyed sex with each other--and apparently were able to go 6 times per night--at 30+! I call BS.
