*Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for providing me with an eARC in exchange for an honest review.*

Everything about this was wrong. A despicable manga that, alongside insulting all genders, even failed to be funny.

The female protagonist constantly threw herself at the male main character in an attempt to seduce him and then attempted to use the fact that she viewed herself as “hot” to justify her actions of gross misconduct. If a man had been doing the same to her that would’ve been viewed as predatory sexual harassment. She constantly acted like a baby that wanted attention from the one person who wouldn’t give it to her.

The worst part was the fact that she was disrespecting him AND his religious values and there was nothing amusing about that. It also led to repetitive interactions where Medaka would walk away or scowl whilst chanting his favourite phrases of “begone worldly desires” and “obey the precepts”.

Any remotely enjoyable aspect of this was far overshadowed by the horridly lewd actions of the protagonist and the way the mangaka portrayed her.

I received this book from Netgalley/Publisher in exchange of an honest review.

What do you do when you are the hottest girl in school and have one guy who is just impervious to your charms? You go hunt for him. Apply all the sexy tricks in your books to him… but will it work?

I really had so so much fun to read this one! I absolutely loved the premise and I was curious how this one would go. I mean, it could go two ways. Both I have seen in manga/anime. One way is that she tries and then gives up to make his life miserable… or the other way in which she never gives up and she keeps finding new ways to get him to fall for her. And in this manga it was the latter one! This girl is determined and BOY she is not giving up. Now if only she can realise that she is not doing this for getting that last boy to fall for her and that everyone loves her in school, but that she is actually in love with him and wants to be with him. XD

Mona-chan was just adorable and I loved seeing her try all sorts of things to get Medaka to notice her. From acting like a kitty to showing a bit of skin to just getting him in the nurse office for some alone time. She really tries everything (even some cliché stuff) and I kept looking forward to seeing both of their reactions. Yes. Because Mona has some wonderful reactions… but Medaka has those as well! I loved that she didn’t give up and that she kept trying. I also loved seeing her real personality a bit more. And that one isn’t bad either! I do have to say that I did feel sorry for her, at the beginning it was mostly a bit of a game to her and while she was hit that he didn’t care, it wasn’t until later that she almost cried and felt so horrible that he just didn’t seem to care. I really wanted to give her a hug and some insight in Medaka’s mind. That he didn’t mean it in a mean way.

Medaka. I just loved that we got his POV at times too and learned why he was acting the way he did. Apparently his family lives at a shrine and are priests.. and he is also entering that priesthood. So throughout the manga we see him both be happy that Mona has attention for him, but also try to ward off all those worldly desires with prayers and scary faces. I do hope that he is able to choose what he wants or at least is honest with Mona eventually.

I was very worried when a new character was introduced, namely Haruno-san. She is a girl from Medaka and Mona’s class and she has a big crush on Mona. Sadly, I have read a few too many manga (and seen a few too many anime) that have these characters and they are often quite yandere. So I was worried that she may act weird when she found out about Mona’s crush on Medaka. Thankfully, she is not bad at all. She even dubbed herself the guardian of these two their romance which had me both laughing and delighted. I loved seeing her keep track of our duo, make cute photographs of Mona, and more! She is a really fun character and I am so happy that the author went for the best route possible.

There is a tad of drama at the middle/to the end because Mona thinks that Haruno-san is also after Medaka. I wasn’t too big of a fan of that, though I also had quite a few laughs at the wild ideas that Mona had in her head! Not to mention the pouty expressions were brilliant. XD

The last chapter made me smile! And then gasp! NO, you cannot end the volume like that! NO. Just no! I need to know more! Argh! Well, I guess I will have to wait “patiently” for the next volume!

I really liked the art! As I said a few times, the expressions are really top notch, but also other parts are well done!

All in all, if you want a silly manga that has you rooting for two characters to get together be sure to check this one out!

[Thanks to Kodansha and Netgalley for a copy of this book in exchange for an unbiased review.]

Mona rules her school through sheer sex appeal, but Kuroiwa, the new guy, is impervious to her charms (finally, a manga with a title as straight ahead as a light novel). Except he’s not and she’s not in return and things are going to get wild. Or dumb.

This book starts off with a bang, as Mona is a hell of a confident high school sexpot (the mangaka worked on her design and it shows) and watching her basically sing her own theme song coming into the building and just succeed her way through it all is pretty fun.

Then the seductive force meets the unseduceable object, in the form of Kuroiwa, and Mona embarks on a campaign of terror, using every possible move a hot-blooded reader would want to try and make him fall for her, since her popularity apparently requires her to catch ‘em all, like thirsty Pokémon.

Honestly, this is probably the book at its funniest. There’s something rather brazen, in a good way, about a heroine who literally rips the front of her shirt off to reveal her bra and has perfected the ‘accidental’ panty flash, as if she’s learned all her tricks from years studying tropes in shonen manga.

The longer it draws the gag out, the less funny it becomes, partly because Kuroiwa is really dull. The reason for his apparent disinterest is that he’s training to be a monk and this apparently precludes him from worldly desires, so he’s slowly going insane on the inside.

Which makes him an inert lump on the outside. The author kind of tries to sneak around this by having the other students going into meltdowns over all Mona’s antics, but it makes this face-off completely uneven, having Mona as this huge pile of emoting while he stands there and takes it.

Things get a bit more tangled with the introduction of the third character, a girl in our leads’ class, who manages to misunderstand things (well, not really, Mona says she has no feelings for Kuroiwa, but that’s clearly a bit of a lie) and be misunderstood in return.

At this point, everybody is being as stupid as is humanly possible to make things funny, which rarely works. I can see this being somebody’s cup of tea, but I felt the returns diminished hard after the first couple chapters.

Still, Mona’s kind of better than this book deserves, despite kind of being awful. The way her Osaka accent slips out when she’s flustered, her infinite store of schemes, that library scene where she basically conjures a fetish from thin air? She’s literally all the fun of this story. She really needs somebody better to play off of.

3 stars - it’s an okay book and almost worth the whole thing just for how silly/clever the first part is. I might grab the second volume and see if they bother to expand anybody else enough to come even close to Mona. Not bad, but definitely not great.

I don't usually read Manga, but I picked this up to try something new - and I quite loved it! It seems to have quite a few lower reviews, but I was pretty into the story. Maybe because I'm manga innocent :P

Mona-Chan is a popular girl in the school - in fact she won't rest until everyone is in love with her and falls at her feet. But, the new boy Medaka isn't interested and does everything he can to push her away. This only makes Mona try even harder and more ridiculous schemes to get him to love her.

I had no idea what to expect with this and did find some of it a little crazy. Mona will do anything for that wow factor to get attention. She comes off as vain and silly and some of her stunts are a little cringe-worthy. But, at the same time she really grew on me and I loved those little moments where she let her real self shine through a bit, even if it was accidental.

Medaka is in training to be a monk and has cast off all relationships - he uses multiple strategies to not fall for Mona's shenanigans but you can see him struggling.

This was a quick read, and fun - it does end on a fairly dramatic cliff-hanger and I would definitely pick up Volume 2 to find out what happens.

My gratitude to Kodansha Comics and Netgalley for providing me with an advanced reading copy of this series in exchange for an honest review.

Egoistical and over-confident beauty, Mona Kawai went to great lengths to make Medaka Kuroiwa fall for her charms. It is just unacceptable that the new guy isn't interested in a Queen Bee like her even in the slightest which drives her mad and desperate. Unbeknownst to the silly cute little Mona that Medaka is actually a monk-in-training and their temple forbids relationships with girls. Will Mona's unmindful schemes finally crack Medaka to enjoy worldly desires or lead to his insanity and even harsh rejection of her? This is a silly and hilarious quick read from Ran Kuze. I actually enjoyed the premise of the story, and Mona is a cutie! The art style is such eye candy. The only issue I got with this shonen manga is the unnecessary fanservice, which I can live without. Overall, it was very engaging. I'd gladly read the next volumes too!

Mona is this very, very, very popular girl that everyone likes. Except for the recently transferred Kuroiwa, who always gives her the cold shoulder. This is all new for Mona, who sets herself a new goal: to make Kuroiwa fall in for her. But she doesn't know that Kuroiwa grew up in a temple and is supposed to become a monk. For a bumpkin like him, Tokyo girls are intense and he does his best to concentrate on the void to stay pure...

You get the idea; pure rom-com with a highlight on comedy. Mona outdoes herself to keep Kuroiwa from frowning every time he sees her - just his way of calling for "pure" thoughts - and it usually ends up in absurd and funny situations.

Refreshingly funny with nice and beautiful characters to boot.

Thanks to NetGalley for this ARC! English is not my first language so sorry for any mistakes.

This manga is about a girl that always get what she wants. She's the queen bee. The only thing she can't have is the attention/love of the new guy at school. This is a popular guy / nerdy girl gender switch that made my heart so warmy. One thing I didn't appreciate was the fan service, those were things that kinda made the experience not so nice for me, that wanted just the fluffy part. Besides that, awesome mangá, I hope to read the next ones.

Thanks to NetGalley and Kodansha for an advanced digital copy to read and review.

This is about Mona and her quest to get Medaka to fall for her. Mona is the most popular and beautiful girl in high school, and it is driving her crazy that she can't get new boy Medaka interested in her. She uses all her charms and every trick in the book to get him to fall in love, all to no effect. In truth Medaka is training to be a monk and all Mona's antics are driving him out of his mind. This was pretty funny, good art, and an interesting premise. I'm interested to see how far they'll go with it.

The most basic manga ever. It’s like they took dress up darling and kubo won’t let me be invisible mashed it together and tried to make a romantic comedy. But it just came across weird. The girl is creepy.

I have no expectations going into this book, but I was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked it. I think the main reason why I enjoyed it so much was because of Mona. She really is a charmer and her cuteness totally won me over.

This manga gave me some Teasing Master Tagaki vibes for some reason but in a good way. I enjoyed the interactions between Mona and Medaka. His stoiciness never failed to make me laugh. I can’t wait to read more!

Hahahaha! Ohhh the situations poor Mona gets herself into...!
Mona is an extremely popular, pretty girl who is used to everyone fawning over her. When the new boy, Kuroiwa, basically ignores her or is even downright RUDE to her, she's determined to win him over - whatever it takes!! She goes SO HARD and SO over the top trying to get Kuroiwa to notice her... and winds up in the wildest situations! She doesn't really LIKE him, she just needs to *WIN* at all costs... Until in a few moments of actually being real and vulnerable, Mona maybe starts to actually like Kuroiwa a little?

The best parts of this manga are all Mona. Kuroiwa is... well, poor Kuroiwa is training to become a monk, and tries really hard to show zero expression despite Mona's ever-increasing antics. I really like Haruno and her deep and abiding (and stalkerish...) love of Mona. I'll keep reading this series purely for the misguided Mona and her equally misguided sidekick cheering on her "love."

definitely more on the fan-service side than the usual sweet young romance manga I read. that being said, something just worked for me with this couple. mona is so spoiled and self-confident, with a more countryside accent that slips out sometimes…she is endearing, and even more so when she’s being stubborn. medaka isn’t quite as well-developed of a character, though the whole monk thing is just ridiculous and different enough to work here. I’m hoping we get more of his personality and backstory in the coming volumes!

my favorite chapters were with haruno, I loved how mona was jealous but not mean at all, and recognized how nice and sweet haruno is (not to mention pretty!). the realization of haruno being mona’s biggest fan was too cute!!

Thank you Netgalley for the review copy.

Mona is beautiful, kind and sexy. She is queen bee at her school and everyone loves her. Except the new guy who is not swooning at her charms. This makes Mona go into overdrive to try and win him over.

The premise is silly but small things, like a throwaway comment from Mona saying she's nice "on the surface" show more self awareness of the characters and plot. The fan service isn’t for me but it is build into Mona’s failing attempts at seduction so it does work (as much as fan service can) with the plot.

I do want to read the next instalment to see how this progresses.

A The story? Great. The art? Damn erotic. The character? Just your average higshcool student with a little bit of spice. The story is about an idol called Mona-Chan trying to seduce one of those pure boys Kuroiwa Medaka. Mona the femal protagonist was always showered with love and affection because of her good looks. When the male protagonist Medaka-kun transfered to the school, she attempted to seduce him with her appeal but was quickly brushed off. She who was never brushed off by anyone before became intrested in the one person that was not intrested in her. After she gets brushed off by Medaka she gets more motivated to make him fall in love with her.

After a few chapters it was revealed that Medaka was a temple boy, which means he was forbided in romance or any worldly desire. He avoided Mona because he knew that he would probably fell in love with her if she was close with him.

When picking a new manga I tend to subject them to a sort of cover test based on poses, clothing options annd emphasis and size of any female characters' chests. This one passed with no problem. The cover is super cute. However it is a bit of a lie because it gives no hint of the antics inside the cover that are clearly aimed at pre-teen boys.

Mona's propensity to flash people and other juveniley smutty nonsense were not communicated by the cover or the blurb, so sadly it falls into the not really for me pile.

please do me a favour and don't read this, it's not worth it. A girl is fully obsessed that every guy and girl must be in love with her and be in love with her. when a boy doesn't care about her she goes ALL WAY doing CRAZY THINGS so he can like her. Meanwhile, she thinks she is in love with him?? Like WTF??? This is so so bad and weird that is not even funny.

Being the prettiest and the most popular girl in school, Mona has always been used to being showered with love everywhere she goes. But when the new transfer student, Medaka, refuses to fall her charms, Mona feels frustrated over it. And she makes it a mission for her to make him fall in love with her.

Oh boy, this one feels a little bit problematic to me. Firstly, is Mona a narcissist? I have no problem with confident characters, I love them, but narcissistic characters who goes out of their way to make everyone be obsessed with them is just not my thing. It would have been okay if Mona actually has a crush on Medaka, but she only pursues Medaka because he does not leer or stare at her like the other boys do.

Her attempts to make him fall for her may be cute and funny at first, but to the point she wants to use her "sex appeal" and then strips open her shirt to show herself in her bra to him is just... too much. And she did all these while not even having any feelings for him. She just wants him to love her, as if it's some kind of a challenge.

Not only is she demeaning herself, but she's also disrespecting Medaka at the same time. I don't care if Medaka secretly finds her cute, but what she did can be considered a sexual harassment. Sure, it's obvious that her plans are backfiring and she's the one catching feelings now, but I still think that Mona is a problematic character.

I do actually like Medaka, because he seems nice and as he is training to become a monk, he's trying his best to avoid worldly desires, especially Mona. I think it will be a bad taste if the author decides to make him forget his training just because Mona managed to seduce him or something in the next volumes.

The reason that I'm not rating this as 1🌟 is probably thanks to Haruno. She may be a stalker, but for someone like Mona, I think she probably would appreciate being stalked rather than being ignored 💀 But apart from the stalker part, Haruno's character is rather cute and I like that she's rooting for Mona and Medaka. If I am to continue reading this series, it will be because of Haruno.

Many thanks to Netgalley and Kodansha for the digital review copy!

I want to preface this review by acknowledging that my rating seems to be running counter to the norm on Goodreads. Medaka Kuroiwa is Impervious to My Charms Vol. 1 has a decent rating (around three and a half stars). I'm not giving it that much because I have some significant concerns with the story. But I'll discuss that more in a moment.

Mona is, without a doubt, the cutest girl in her school – and she knows it. She wears her cuteness like armor, using it to get what she wants. That is until Medaka Kuroiwa arrives. For some reason, her cuteness doesn't seem to be getting through to him.

Medaka is a new student at the school, which is his first of this kind. Before now, he had spent his whole life living in a temple, training to be a monk. To say that he's dealing with a bit of a culture shock would be an understatement.

So this series initially caught my attention because it sounded like a cute romance. However, I would not describe anything in this story as a romance. Mona is actively chasing Medaka around the school, doing everything she can to make him fall for her.

My issue with Medaka Kuroiwa is Impervious to My Charms Vol. 1: it's problematic. Suppose you're having trouble seeing why this is a problem. Try flipping the gender of the characters. Mona is harassing a guy that told her no, going so far as to put the two of them in awkward situations (which some would describe more harshly if we're being honest here).

The lack of consent and awareness is alarming. It made it impossible to enjoy the story. So instead of a relaxing and fun romance, I got to read something that frustrated me to no end. Disappointing.

Thanks to Kodansha Comics and #NetGalley for making this book available for review. All opinions expressed are my own.

Thank you so much to the author, Kodansha Comics, and NetGalley for the complimentary ARC!
This review contains my honest and unbiased thoughts and opinions. 🌸

When I started this manga, I worried that it would end up being one I didn't finish or just skimmed through.
However, it completely won me over and now I can't wait for volume two!

I admit, I was slightly annoyed with Mona (female MC) when I first started reading. She's the typical "I'm pretty, I know I'm pretty, Everyone Loves Me, I can get/do anything I want cause I'm pretty" and she comes on so strong and conceited at first that I didn't think I would enjoy this manga.

Then we meet Medaka Kuroiwa, the male MC. I did find it amusing that he rejected all of Mona's advances and flirting, he was just "whatever" when it came to her, sometimes even to the point of "really? seriously?" haha and I loved it. I was thrilled it wasn't going to be an instant "cute popular girl wins over the quiet broody guy", I love that the author made a character who wasn't completely charmed by the "I'm pretty and popular Queen Bee" girl. Medaka Kuroiwa kept me reading this manga.

And then the story really started developing and we learn more about our guy, we see the not so confident side of our girl which does make her much more likeable and relatable. Now the flirty chase has become awkward and cute with an additional character added in.

By the end of the volume, I was enjoying the story and ready to continue reading volume two. Although it was a rocky start, once past that first little bit, the story takes off and the manga develops a cute storyline. I'm looking forward to seeing what the author does with it.

Medaka Kuroiwa is Impervious to My Charms took me by surprise, since I don't usually like ecchi shounen like this. Mona is the most popular girl at school and all the boys love her and she knows it (and uses it of course). Medaka Kuroiwa is a boy that changes schools from the countryside and he is to follow in the footsteps of the temple aka not be confused by carnal desires. Thus the boy is stoic and not interested, even when he thinks Mona is cute in reality. This is something Mona can't take and does her best to try to lure him and make him fall in love with her. The instances are actually well played and laugh at cliches, which is super great. At the same time we are inside the heads of our characters and the inside and outside look so different. They both have personas and there isn't too much fan service either, or it at last has it's logical place.

The art looks nice and there are lots of details. This is a very vivid series with backgrounds too, so not just talking heads. The rhythm is good albeit a little fast, but that doesn't bother too much. I do hope we get more content and we already get to meet the Mona fangirl. This is surely one of the better series like this!

--------------

The protagonist of this manga is very pretty that's for sure (she looks a lot like Lucy Heartfilia), but also quite self-centered and with little brain.
Her classmates took two chapters to go and ask what problem Medaka had with the female protagonist. And she still can't ask him? With all her charisma and her cuteness?
In fact, this first issue was quite repetitive and I bet that the ending of the first volume will end as usual as well.
All in all, however, it's a fun and enjoyable read.

Thank you Netgalley and Kodansha for the chance to read this hilarious and cute manga, Kuroiwa is Impervious to My Charms Vol# 1 by Ran Kuze.

Stories like this with amazing artwork and characters that pop out on the page are the reasons why I love reading manga. Mona a feisty, a bit narcissistic, determined and super cute character who for all her beauty can't understand why the one boy in her class, Medaka isn't falling head over heels for her. And this one boy is driving her absolutely crazy, because no matter what she does---from spilling water on her shirt, to closely touching her, his face is the same, annoyed and unfazed. But unknown to Mona, Medaka actually finds her extremely cute but keeps reminding himself of his priest training and refuses to engage her or show that's he's affected.

This whole first volume had me rolling laughter and wishing volume #2 was out, like now! I can't wait to see how Mona's antics escalate and whether she can see past herself to notice someone else's kindness and caring nature.

5/5 stars! Definitely a must read!

The story of a popular girl, Mona, completely losing it when the new guy in school, the title's Medaka Kuroiwa, doesn't fawn over her like everyone else always does. What she doesn't know is that Kuroiwa does like her but he's dedicated to becoming a monk and can't form any type of attachment to girls, so his constantly frowning at her is his attempt at meditating the feelings away.
I confess to thinking the idea of the popular girl hounding the poor guy to force him to like her as incredibly annoying, but Kuze manages to make even the more over-the-top panels feel sweet and show that Mona's obsession is mostly due to her insecurity. There is a lot more depth to the characters than the premise and the over-the-top fanservice would imply.
Overall, I did chuckle a couple of times and I have questions about both Mona's and Kuroiwa's families so I'll probably be checking out the next volume.

Happy thanks to NetGalley and Kodansha for the interesting read!

My thanks to NetGalley and Kodansha for an eARC copy of this book to read and review.

This was a solid, middle of the road, 3 stars. It was kind of funny, but the MC h pursued the MC H WAAAAY beyond what was right. If the genders had been reversed, the male MC doing the pursuing would have been slapped with a restraining order. So it left a slightly unhappy taste in my mouth. I could see why it would be cute/funny, but I could also see why it would be on the verge of unhealthy stalking.

So mixed feelings about this one. The artwork was beautiful, the cat worship only makes sense to this fellow cat lover, but I wish the MC h would calm down. I feel badly for the MC H who is in training to be a monk. It's not fair for him. Maybe if she knew, she would respect his decision? I would like to think so.

I will read the next one and hope it gets less stalker. Consent, it's not just for girls.

Mona, our protagonist, considers herself to be the Queen Bee in her school.  She's beautiful, cute, and all of the boys would bend over backwards for her.  All of them, except for Medaka Kuroiwa.  He's just transferred in and often appears to get annoyed when Mona tries to lay down her signature charm.  This just makes Mona even more determined for his attention and hilarity ensues.

I thought that this book was pretty funny, and I think Mona and Medaka experience a good amount of character growth even within the single volume.  The first book contains 8 chapters, and each chapter is pretty much a different attempt by Mona to to get Medaka's attention.  I think this structure makes the book much easier to get into, rather than dragging the same attempt out for longer than it needs.  I would be interested in checking out volume 2 when it is released.

arc provided by the publisher via netgalley in exchange for an honest review!

This fun shoujo follows queen bee Mona, who has been popular, pretty, and admired her entire life. Any guy she wants, she can get... except for new transfer Medaka Kuroiwa, who just makes faces, turns away, and refuses to talk to her whenever she tries to flirt. Assuming Medaka hates her, she decides to step up her game-- not realizing that Medaka is actually a monk in training trying to resist how cute he finds her.

This was a decent read! I loved the dynamic between the two main characters and I loved that instead of having a rival storyline, Mona and Tsubomi become friends and Tsubomi roots for her. However I wasn't super ensnared by the characters and the humorous moments were really the only things that stuck out. I think this is probably best for a younger audience.

Mona knows she’s cute and can get whoever she wants except medaka.

I want to like this manga but it was just alittle to shounen for my taste. I didn’t love the panty flashes and literally ripping her shirt to reveal her bra. I also found Mona to be slightly annoying to be honest. It just seemed like she only perused medaka just because he didn’t like her. I did like medaka though. I found his character to nice. I like that he was trying to be monk so he wants to abstain. It just felt alittle weird to me. I felt bad for medaka.

Overall 3/5
The biggest reason I didn’t like this was Mona’s character. I found her to be weird and pushy and annoying. I felt like she goes to far and it makes me feel bad for medaka, who is the only character I really liked.
