Program 12 is the first installment of the Emile Reed Chronicles, but it is a novella, not a full-length novel. The time frame of when it occurs overlaps with the beginning of Program 13, the first full-length novel in the Emile Reed Chronicles.
Summary: Before Program 13, there was Program 12. She was supposed to be Charles McVeigh’s glorious prototype, his perfect creation. But something went wrong.
What I Liked: The thing about novellas is that they are usually very short, and therefore, either a hit or a miss. Novellas usually expand on something mentioned in the full-length novel, or retell a scene, in another person’s point of view, or something of that nature that adds to the overall plot of the series. This novella is extremely short, but I believe that it is a fantastic supplement to the world of Vesta Corp. I liked reading about a different Program, especially since I already knew the outcome of Program12, because of what was mentioned in Program 13 (the full-length novel). Program 12’s voice is very similar to what becomes of Emile’s, towards the end of Program 13, which makes sense, because it is that of rebellion and of desperation. I like reading about what happened before Emile came to Vesta Corp, and it being through a different set of eyes. This novella is not necessary to read Program 13, but it raises the readers’ understanding of the Programs, and of Charles McVeigh.
What I Did Not Like: Like I said, novellas are usually hit or miss, and in this case, it was a hit. Great structure, smooth flow of text, no grammar mistakes, and a good short story.
Would I Recommend It: Yes, especially since it’s free! Why NOT read this short novella!
Rating: 5 stars. This is a powerful novella, and it deserves all five of those stars.
I cannot wait to see what is to come, Ms. Sobon! Nicely done so far :)
This is kind of reminding me of The Rules but the opposite, but it's amazing! I wish it was a longer audiobook, but I'll keep going with the series if I can find it!
I was really surprised how much I enjoyed this story. Granted it's very much like The Doll House directed by Joss Whedon, but that's probably why I liked it. I thought it was a really great introduction to the story and I really appreciated that the first 3 chapters of Program 13 were included at the end of this prequel because it really helped me want to continue with this story. Seems like it's going to be a fairly soft sci-fi story but I'm looking for to it for its possible entertainment value.
P.S. This does say it's a 15 page story but it's much longer with the 3 chapters of the book included.
I've not yet read Program 13, as I am reading them in succession in the omnibus edition. This short story gives a very minor intro to the Vesta company and the fact that they have a less than glorious purpose behind their "programs". This story highlights Program 12 as she becomes aware of what's happening and the company deactivates her. However, before she is deactivated, she issues a warning that someone, even though it won't be her, will find out what they're doing and take them down.
I really enjoyed this short. My only complaint is that is was too short. I liked it so much that when it ended I was slightly disappointed and left wanting more.
