Human Behavior Professor, Sidney Rothman is no stranger to heartache at the hands of a younger woman. So when he meets the charming mocha-skinned beauty, he’s wary. Her sweet nature and natural tendency for submissive behavior overrule his fear, and Sidney decides to train her as a sub. Sutton takes to the lifestyle like a duck to water, but the one thing he didn’t bargain for was her ability to thaw the ice around his heart.
Sutton thrives on pressure. Handed a heavy load of responsibility from the time she was young, she’s fallen into the habit of pushing her feelings aside to get things done. After spending the past ten years focused on her career and family, she begins to notice how empty her condo feels and longs for something more. From the moment she meets Sidney, she’s instantly attracted to his intelligence and regal demeanor. When he introduces her to the BDSM lifestyle, her unexpected response surprises her. Good girls did not beg to be spanked. Or did they? Can she open up to Sidney and learn to live for herself before it’s too late?

Lessons from the Professor introduced me to another new to me author, Shyla Colt. I really enjoyed her writing style. This is a great BDSM light story! He has been a Dom for years, and his dominate ways speak to her on deeper level.
Sutton had to grow up fast when her father died. She made a promise to herself many years ago she wouldn’t end up dependant on a man like her mother. She put her carrier first for years, and doesn’t know how to stop. Until her friend and coworker introduces her to Sidney a much older professor. Sidney has had a bad experience with a sub new to the lifestyle in the past, and he is unsure about taking a chance on Sutton. But as he gets to know her better he sees she is nothing like the woman that broke him.
The story of these two is a quick beautiful story!! I love how he took his time to introduce her into the lifestyle instead of jumping straight into tying her up and spanking the tar out of her. It felt like a true transition into a new world for Sutton. I loved how real these characters seemed. Their insecurities are dealt with wonderfully, and although this is a quick read you don’t feel like they were rushed to HEA. I hope y’all like this one as much as I have.
This is a really sweet short. To be honest, I liked that I could and could not relate to the heroine. I will never understand why someone at 31 would be like her. Oh, and it's not what you think. I'm cool with that. I'm referring to not knowing anything about wine at that age. Even at the tinder age of 17 as a freshman in college I had box-o-wine at dinner parties. Did I like it? HELL NO, but you serve wine. I took it upon myself to learn about wines so I wouldn't be a heathen serving kool-aid at functions. I'm not saying that this character would, but she also offered to feed her friend and gave her some funky ass cold cuts, so ya know.
On the bright side, I loved how open minded she was and that she did have a backbone. Also, she and Sid were hot together. 4 stars.
Book had a good storyline and started off decent but fell flat. First of all the story was too short. There were opportunities for plotlines to develop but the author doesn't take the time to really explore any of them. The H/H whole relationship felt rushed, confusing at times and nothing is truly fleshed out. I'm not sure how or when it actually developed, all I know is that they were together. It was like I was watching a movie and some hit the flash forward button and by the time you blink it was over and weeks later.
Oh. My. Gawd! Shyla Colt this book darn near singed my hands off!! I loved this book despite the age gap between Sidney and Sutton. I mean the chemistry and passion these characters shared went beyond the 18 year difference in their ages. Sidney's gentle way of introducing Sutton into the BDSM lifestyle was so graceful. I was a little ticked at first that Sutton chose to seek out her ex, Jackson, without informing Sidney especially after the rules she agreed to. But, Sidney wasn't without his faults either. I have to say Shyla Colt did a fabulous job with this storyline. It flowed so well all the way to Sidney and Sutton's HEA. I only wished the book was longer. Great book!!
Ms. Colt is a very versatile writer. Her books range in scope from paranormal to MOTORCYCLE clubs to erotic romance. This is the first...maybe only....BDMS offering from her. Sutton is a workaholic nurse and Sidney is an urbane professor. They both come with baggage from past relationships. I liked both characters and the story was interesting AND hot.

Lessons from the Professor was my first Shyla Colt book and I must say she has gained a new fan. Sutton overhears some of her co-workers discussing her in unflattering terms and realizes she really does need to spice up her life a little bit. She’s achieved most of the goals she has set out for herself, it’s time to cut loose and have a little fun.
I greatly enjoyed watching Sutton grow from a mousy, let everyone walk all over me type of person to an independent, strong, woman who stood up for herself and insisted she be treated with the respect she deserved. Sidney on the other hand is a much older gentleman who has more life experience and he really does an excellent job bringing Sutton out of her shell. Sutton however also helps him heal as well since he was hurt by a woman in his past. That was one trait of Sidney that bothered me initially. He was very insistent that Sutton share her past and secrets but refused to reciprocate. The relationship seemed very one-sided at that point.
Being erotica, I expected the story to be very steamy. While it was exciting, it wasn’t as hot and steamy as I had hoped. Despite that, I do feel that taking it slow was the right thing to do with the two characters although knowing what I know about men (even older ones) it seemed a bit too slow to be realistic.
While the story does incorporate BDSM into it, compared to other books I have read with those themes, the author does an excellent job of bringing it into the story tastefully and it does not feel overwhelming. In fact, it seemed a bit on the light side. I’m still not sure I understand the whole “contract” aspect that always seems to be included in these types of stories. It just seems wrong to have to sign a contract to have sex. The author did downplay that portion so my discomfort was minor.
One question I had and I’m still looking for the answer too is that I felt maybe Leigh and James have their own story out there somewhere. Initially I haven’t been able to find anything but I hope they do as I would love to read their story.
Sutton is an ER nurse who has had nothing but responsibilities heaped on her shoulders from the time she was a young girl. She’s only had one serious relationship that ended when she found her fiancé having sex with another nurse. She has all but given up on relationships, opting to bury herself in her work instead. Her friend and co-worker Leigh has been trying to get her to go out with her and her husband but Sutton always declines. One night she overheard some of the other nurses talking about how she never went out with them calling her ‘Miss Priss’. Then Leigh came to her defense. Sutton decided then and there to make a few changes and told Leigh that she would go out with her.
Thus she meets Sidney, a Professor who works with Leigh’s husband, James. Sidney is eighteen years her senior with salt and pepper hair, English accent and what she described as a ‘swagger that pulled her towards him like a magnet’. Sutton hoped that Sidney felt the same pull that she did and when she found out that the feeling was mutual, she decided to date him. She knew that her friend Leigh and her husband James were into an alternative lifestyle and she was curious to try it as well when Sidney told her that he also lived the life. He explained the role of Dom and Submissive to her and she was more that ready to try this even though she was a virgin to it.
Sutton took to this lifestyle like a bee to honey, she came alive and even with the distraction of her spoiled baby sister Carissa, her mother trying to get her and her ex Jackson back together, as well as Sidney’s issues with his ex Christine, these two were able to find their way to a pleasurable relationship. The story was very well written and the characters were people you could care about. You wanted to tell her mom to stop meddling, her sister to grow up and you just wanted to smack her ex, Jackson. Any book that can elicit that kind of feelings from the reader is a book worth reading twice.
The supporting cast are quite amusing - Leigh and her husband, Sutton's mother and younger sister, and Sutton's ex-fiancé Jackson all play into the story. I really liked the fact that this was played out over months - the two characters did not fall into love or even into bed immediately, and their relationship started out as dating and developed over time. It also portrayed the BDSM aspects as developing slowly which I also appreciated. Sidney took his time with Sutton since everything they did was new to her. I enjoyed the confrontation with Jackson in the cafeteria and the final scene wrapped the book up well.
Oh where do I start. I've just read this fabulous story in one setting, and now have the sappiest grin on my face. I was in a foul mood when I was searching my Kindle for some distraction, and this one jumped out at me, because I remembered the super hot excerpt.
However this is so much more than just a hot read. Wonderfully crafted characters, who completely drew me into the story and who I was willing to their HEA. Interesting second characters. Please tell me that Carissa is going to get her own book! :-) And a beautiful love story.
Happy sigh. All I look for in a book and more. I loved this one!
Sutton and Sidney both had been hurt by past romantic and parental relationships. They needed closure to finally get who and what they needed. Loved their journey. If BDSM is not anything you want to explore, skip this story. This was well written and thought out. We all have needs to feel loved and cared for. Some needs and desired are outside what each may consider normal. This is not ours to judge. Well done Ms. Shyla.
