The author of numerous classic novels and short stories (many of which were turned into classic films) such as Rear Window, The Bride Wore Black, The Night Has a Thousand Eyes, Waltz Into Darkness, and I Married a Dead Man, Woolrich began his career in the 1920s writing mainstream novels that won him comparisons to F. Scott Fitzgerald. The bulk of his best-known work, however, was written in the field of crime fiction, often appearing serialized in pulp magazines or as paperback novels. Because he was prolific, he found it necessary to publish under multiple pseudonyms, including "William Irish" and "George Hopley" [...] Woolrich lived a life as dark and emotionally tortured as any of his unfortunate characters and died, alone, in a seedy Manhattan hotel room following the amputation of a gangrenous leg. Upon his death, he left a bequest of one million dollars to Columbia University, to fund a scholarship for young writers.

Woolrich, like Bradbury, wrote differently from everyone else. Also like Bradbury, it’s rare that I run across one of his stories, even an early pulp story, that doesn’t work for me on some level. I even enjoy his whiz-bang stuff, written years before this one. This one is later, when he was on the cusp of literary immortality with The Bride Wore Black, the novel which would propel him to greatness, penning a string of suspense novels unlike any that had ever been written before, creating a genre all his own. This novelette, however, has an odd narrative voice, and while I’m giving it three stars, I can only recommend it for Woolrich completists. It’s included in one of the older collections of his short stories and novelettes, and also as a single story on Kindle.
You accept coincidence and some implausibility when reading Woolrich, because he’s so entertaining you don’t care. There’s quite a bit here, but even that is made more palatable because here he is telling a story which borders on Science Fiction, rather than weird menace. I can hardly believe I’m saying this, because there’s no bigger fan of his work, but it isn’t the story that let me down on this one — the premise, in fact, is terrific — but the execution. More than any other writer I’ve ever read, Woolrich was genius at finding the right voice (male or female) from which to tell the story. If first person worked best, or third person, that’s where he went. Here, the narrator feels like some unseen person relating a minute by minute account of the story as it unfolds. Because we’re not hearing it from O’Shaughnessy’s head, nor Nova’s — which would have been difficult, but interesting — we don’t get any warm connection to them, or the story. As pulp, it’s okay, but as Woolrich, it’s subpar.
The opening is atmospheric enough, as we follow a man racing through the night with a sleeping woman — though she may not be just sleeping — in the back of the car. But that narrative voice I mentioned, and the odd tone Woolrich gives it is distracting from the get-go. Eventually we change scenes to O’Shaughnessy, and the story begins unfolding. It concerns a scientist named Denholt, who has created a serum for revivification. At a remote location, a young woman named Nova, sweet, almost child-like, is trapped. When O’Shaughnessy, who has always been lucky, survives a plane crash, he seeks help, and comes across the lovely Nova. This leads him to Denholt. What follows is a tale of escape, tremendous coincidence once they do, and the revelation that Nova must return, because she is beginning to decay…

Μην αφήσετε την περίληψη να σας μπερδέψει, είναι μία καλογραμμένη, σκοτεινή, καταθλιπτική νουάρ νουβέλα, στην οποία θα βυθιστείτε και δεν θα το πάρετε και χαμπάρι. Και την ανατροπή της έχει, και το σπασπένς έχει, και το περίεργο έχει, και το "γαμώτο" έχει.
Μόνο μου παράπονο, τον έπαιρνε τον Cornell να το κάνει μυθιστόρημα κανονικό. Ήθελα κάποιες σκηνές παραπάνω να ζήσουν οι πρωταγωνιστές.

Ίσως το πιο γρήγορο και αγωνιώδες βιβλίο του Woolrich με έντονα στοιχεία μυστηρίου, ψυχολογικού θρίλερ ακόμα και φαντασίας, κυρίως, στα 2/3 του. Στο τελευταίο μέρος, όμως, η έντονη επίδραση του 'Φρανκενστάιν' της Σέλλυ το κάνει αντιφατικό, αλλά και αρκετά δραματικό - ωστόσο προτείνεται ανεπιφύλακτα, γιατί είναι αρκετά πρωτότυπο με μεταφυσικές προεκτάσεις. Είναι εδώ και αρκετό καιρό εξαντλημένο και σπάνιο, και καλό είναι να επανεκδοθεί.

Τρίτο βιβλίο του Κόρνελ Γούλριτς που διαβάζω, μετά τα "Η νύφη φορούσε μαύρα" και "Φάντομ Λέιντυ", μου φάνηκε και αυτό αρκούντως καλογραμμένο, ατμοσφαιρικό και σκοτεινό. Ουσιαστικά πρόκειται για νουβέλα, και όχι για μυθιστόρημα, στην οποία συμμετέχουν ένας κλασικός τρελός επιστήμονας, μια πανέμορφη κοπέλα που επιστρέφει από τον κόσμο των νεκρών, ένας τυχοδιώκτης Ιρλανδός αεροπόρος και μια συμμορία εγκληματιών από το Σικάγο. Περίληψη της ιστορίας δεν γράφω, το καλύτερο είναι να αρχίσετε το βιβλιαράκι αυτό γνωρίζοντας ελάχιστα πράγματα για την πλοκή.
Έχουμε να κάνουμε με μια πολύ ενδιαφέρουσα και καλογραμμένη ιστορία, που συνδυάζει το αστυνομικό νουάρ με τον τρόμο και το αλλόκοτο. Η ατμόσφαιρα είναι αρκετά σκοτεινή έως ζοφερή, η εξέλιξη της ιστορίας αγωνιώδης και η γραφή ξεχωριστή και ευκολοδιάβαστη, σκληρή και συνάμα ποιητική. Σίγουρα κάποια γεγονότα από την μέση της ιστορίας και μετά προχωράνε κάπως γρήγορα (μην πω βιαστικά), αλλά αυτό συμβαίνει συνήθως με τις νουβέλες. Η αλήθεια είναι ότι η αρχή της ιστορίας μου φάνηκε εξαιρετική, όπως και το τέλος, απλά ορισμένα γεγονότα στα μισά ήθελαν περισσότερο... άπλωμα. Κατά τ'άλλα πρόκειται για μια πάρα πολύ καλή νουβέλα, σκοτεινή και απαισιόδοξη, που προτείνω χωρίς δεύτερη σκέψη.

Το εξώφυλλο παραπλανει.
Το οπισθόφυλλο παραπλανει.
Μια γυναίκα νεκροζωντανη,ένας τρελός επιστήμονας (ο ιγκορ λείπει μονο),ένας κωλοφαρφδος αεροπόρος και μια συμμορία συνθέτουν αυτή τη νουβέλα.
Σικάγο του '38 πανω κάτω. Λίγο η ποταπαγορευση,το πιστολίδι(γιατί έτσι λύνονται οι λογαριασμοί),τα πρώτα αναγνώσματα τρόμου και δεν μπορείς να το καταταξεις σε κάποιο συγκεκριμένο είδος.
Ενδιαφέρουσα ιστορία αν και το ήθελα λίγο μεγαλύτερο και να την αναπτύξει παραπάνω.

Cornell Woolrichs "Die Leiche der Jane Brown" ist ein typisches Beispiel für den unnachahmlichen Stil des Autors, der ihn zum Meister des Noir gemacht hat. Wer seine Werke kennt, weiß, dass er eine einzigartige Fähigkeit besitzt, eine beklemmende Atmosphäre zu schaffen und den Leser in ein Netz aus Verzweiflung und Schicksal zu ziehen. Dieses Buch ist da keine Ausnahme und bietet eine packende, wenn auch düstere Leseerfahrung.
Die Geschichte um den Piloten Penny O'Shaughnessy, der nach einem Absturz in der Wildnis auf ein abgelegenes Anwesen stößt und dort auf mysteriöse Ereignisse trifft, ist von Anfang an hochspannend. Woolrich zieht die Schraube der Spannung immer weiter an und lässt den Leser kaum Luft holen. Die surreal anmutende Handlung, in der eine tote Frau immer wieder zum Leben erweckt wird, ist genial verdreht und sorgt für eine ständige Grundspannung, die sich bis zum bitteren Ende hält.
Woolrichs Prosa ist schnörkellos und prägnant, was der Geschichte ein rasantes Tempo verleiht. Er ist ein Meister darin, mit wenigen Worten maximale Wirkung zu erzielen und Bilder im Kopf des Lesers zu erzeugen, die sich festsetzen. Die klaustrophobische Stimmung des abgelegenen Hauses und die undurchsichtigen Motive der Charaktere tragen maßgeblich zur beklemmenden Atmosphäre bei. Die typischen Woolrich-Themen wie Isolation, Paranoia und das unentrinnbare Schicksal sind allgegenwärtig und verleihen der Geschichte eine zusätzliche Tiefe.
Ein kleiner Kritikpunkt ist, dass die Charaktere manchmal etwas blass bleiben und eher als Werkzeuge der Handlung dienen, um die bizarre Geschichte voranzutreiben. Manchmal wünschte man sich eine tiefere psychologische Ausleuchtung, um die Beweggründe noch besser zu verstehen. Dennoch ist dies typisch für Woolrichs Stil, bei dem die dichte Atmosphäre und die unerwarteten Wendungen im Vordergrund stehen.

Πολύ καλό νουάρ! Φοβερή γραφή που συνδυάζει το νουάρ με ιστορίες τρόμου. Ένας τρελός επιστήμονας, μια γοητευτική γυναίκα, μια συμμορία, ένας πεισματάρης, σκληροτράχηλος πιλότος. Γοητευτικό αλλά μικρό σε έκταση ενώ θα μπορούσε να αναλύσει περισσότερο τους χαρακτήρες.
