So I don’t technically know how many chapters this consists of but having read online in weekly uploaded chapters, I’m caught up on the series. Assuming this is the next ~10 chapters after Vol 13, I will just say this right now.
This may be the best volume yet.
Considering I just caught up, this review is kind of a review of the whole series thus far.
Everything has begun to come to a head, we’ve gotten development on John, Patrick, Barbara, and the other star bearers, and there’s a hope in sight for the dissidents of Shadows House.
As expected, Anthony is probably a larger threat than Edward is, or even Shadows House on general, considering the Great Grandfather’s lack of interest in the Children’s Wing.
In general, there is a slippery slope to be had in Shadows House. Everyone wants to destroy the 3rd Floor, but in the process they want to replace it, and may ultimately become what they want to destroy. We see this in:
• Kate is inherently manipulative. Even Barbara indirectly calls her out on this, as did Maryrose during their fight. Kate has now gained significant power, so should we worry about how morally corrupt she may become? Lets not forget her idealization of her ancestry and the former Mirrors house, while not supernatural, were still most likely rich, privileged, tone-deaf royalty who abused their servants and the local villages under their power.
• Edward is tired of the lack of attention from the 3rd floor, yet he barely regarded the children’s wing when in charge of it.
• Anthony wants to destroy Great Grandfather, but has obviously amassed a cult following which worships him in the same manner.
• Even Maryrose and Oliver didn’t want to give up their lives of privilege and luxury, and would rather keep the system running than tear it down entirely.
It’s ironic, the only person willing to give all of it up is Patrick, the aristocratic jerk of the group, because as he said it, “You understand shadows are not nobles… right? Patrick felt ashamed, of not being a noble, of being worthless. Patrick almost lost his raison d’etre. But what’s important is neither birth nor position. The essence of nobility… is helping those who are weak.” With Patrick giving up his star afterward as well proves he is, ironically, more “pure of heart” than most of the people trying to rebel against Shadows House. Maybe Margaret was right on that one.
I made a joke to my friends that I could easily equate this to Star Wars; but I really could! Anthony seems like Saw Gerrera in the aspect that he is willing to kill possible allies because all he cares about his his extremist view. Great Grandfather can be equated to Palpatine in his lust for power but underestimation of rebellion, Shadows like Jedi who are skilled supernaturally and think they’re in control when they aren’t, and “Living Dolls” like the Clones who, while unintentionally mirror their superiors, are made devoid of emotion and brainwashed into following orders and ultimately worshipping the ultimate leader, even if it means disregarding the very people they’re assigned to protect.
