Dancers at the Dawn of Time

After Judas and characters from Sengoku Jidai Japan in Vol.2, we now meet Jesuit Francis Xavier and Mitsuhide Takeshi (Oda Nobunaga's felon vassal). There is also talk about Hideyoshi Toyotomi and Ieyasu Tokugawa, naturally :)

And... it appears there were initially a scroll AND a book enclosing the ominous bat!

I enjoyed following the path of ninja Kanbei and his childhood friends, now bitter enemies fighting for the sinister scroll in the age of Oda Nobunaga's ascent.

I am keeping this series on a hold because I am feeling as if I am losing interest in it , maybe because much of its story till now is set in past in the times of ninja and samurais to which I can't easily relate.
Would return reading it in future.

Even though I am an avid reader of Japanese sequential art, I was stunned by my ignorance regarding Japanese history. Nevertheless, ninjas, bats and scrolls and old people are cool and Urasawa knows how to weave a cohesive smaller story incorporated in the larger narrative.

this bat has been existing for that long?? it seems like it's been 'travelling' through eras and enticing people to do something. still don't know where this is leading us, though

Kanbei's tale is not worked up enough for my tastes, but it's well-arranged and beautifully drawn with several evocative moments, and the story as a whole remains an intriguing page-turner. Urasawa's pleasure in his creation is contagious.

The airport scene is really spooky.

The question of what Billy Bat represents is becoming more fun to think about it. Is he an embodiment of destiny? Of the historical imperative? A symbol for moments when the balance of the world comes especially close to tipping one way or another, towards darkness or towards light, towards war or towards peace? A personification of what Jewish sources call the Evil Inclination? An expansion of every individual conflicted human heart in its aggressive multiplicity? A Golding-ian eternal darkness that entered the world the same moment consciousness did?

I think I’m a little conflicted, on one hand the nebulous nature of the bat is very good mystery wise, but on the other hand we really aren’t getting much about the bat itself, more just snapshots of how the bat has been affecting history. I suspect that’ll change as the series goes on. I trust Urasawa to write a great mystery that unravels at a good pace. That being said I think the Kanbei’s little arc that he went on in this volume was pretty well done but again I think the highlight is the effect the bat has on each characters

After the absolute masterpieces of Monster and 20th Century Boys, I’m surprised to find myself enjoying this series less and less as it goes on. I’ll probably read one more volume before deciding whether I want to keep reading or not. It’s very convoluted and the mystery just doesn’t feel nearly as strong or as scary as his other two series that I’ve read. It feels forced and even kind of silly at times. I didn’t enjoy the samurai subplot.

I must admit, it took me some time to adjust to the "time jump" so I took a short break before finishing volume 3, but.. wow! This man's imagination knows no bounds!

Taking a "bat shit absurd" (put intended) idea at first, and transforming it into something of epic proportions.. I guess Urasawa is the epitome of the old saying that creativity is just intelligence having fun. Not that I'm surprised having read MONSTER, PLUTO and 20th CENTURY BOYS.

I would have liked it if I had more free time to properly pace my reading, however, it'd have to be squeezed in in odd moments whenever I have free time throughout the week. Still, BILLY BAT is another Urasawa story that is damn worth it!

Previously, I mentioned this story takes place between different times. I would like to correct that by saying it takes place between different ERAS! Manipulative conspiracy theory at its finest!
Seems like it's not just one. There is more than one conspiracy theory!
This may become one of my favourites!
Fingers-crossed!!
