A year after ending his engagement a mere two days before the wedding, Ezra has settled into his new life: documenting the local seal population, walking the beaches with his black lab, or having lunch with his one remaining friend. Life is simple, quiet, and predictable until the day Ezra befriends a man who walks right out of the sea.

Kai has been alone for a long time—a very, very long time. So much so, he can’t remember living as anything but a seal or caring about anyone human. Until one day, he meets someone amid the ocean who drives his urge to return to land again.

Waves is a low-angst MM paranormal romance featuring a selkie and human pairing.

The good
+ Bonking their heads together as an affectionate gesture
+ Kai's friendship with the dog
+ Kai's general happiness at being with Ezra. Even when Ezra is laughing and Kai doesn't know why, he laughs along. Or when the mood is neutral he just smiles because he's happy to be with Ezra
+ Kai sneakily lulling Ezra to sleep because in his opinion he needs lots of naps
    + Eric. He's a great friend
+ The cover. It's really cute

The neutral
o I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book. My review remains honest and unbiased
o Kai's immortality compared to Ezra's mortality was discussed very little. Is Kai going to stay with Ezra until Ezra is old and gray? Or does Kai age now that he's on land more often? An epilogue or some more information about the future would have been nice

The bad
    - Ezra's friend Mary said that Kai not having tried to have sex with Ezra meant he wasn't into him. First of all, it had just been a few days, and secondly, sex is not a way to measure if someone's into you. It's also none of Mary's damn business
    - Kai didn't want to have anal sex. Ezra did it anyway before Kai knew what was happening. Consent is important, and it was not given here. Later on, Mary said Kai was a side. Ezra didn't know there were people who didn't participate in anal sex, which is a very weird thing not to realize, and then still didn't accept that Kai may be a side. Kai even said "I like it much better when we do it this way" after frottage. But Ezra made Kai bottom instead of top to show him how good it could be, as if it's compulsory to like specific sex acts
    - Ezra presented Kai with an ultimatum where he had to choose between being with Ezra while miserable and suffering permanently and possibly even die, and being himself and living the way his species was meant to without pain or suffering but without Ezra. Who even presents an ultimatum like that? That's so emotionally manipulative. Ezra claims it's because of his anxiety, but there's a difference between 'driving the ones you love away' and toxic behavior. Also, aside from this emotionally abusive behavior, it's also kind of physically abusive, since Ezra
    - When the book ended, there was a sort of after-prologue. I wish that had either been included as an actual prologue, or left out altogether. Now it took up the spot where usually an epilogue is included, and made the book end on a very sad note. I even forgot for a second that the book actually did have a happily ever after because the prologue definitely didn't

Quotes
    "You must have been lonely."
"I didn't feel lonely until I met someone I missed."

    "He smells bad."
    "He does not."
"Yes, he does. If your olfactory senses were as good as mine, you would smell it on him, too. He reeks of bullshit."

There was so much potential here. The head bonks, Kai's dedication to Ezra and their endless affection for each other were perfect. However, Ezra ruined the book for me. He just got out of a bad relationship and then proceeded to be a toxic boyfriend himself. Consent is important. Not being emotionally manipulative is also pretty damn important. In the end I just felt sad for Kai. He deserved everything he could ever want, and it's a pity that he didn't realize he could want something better than what Ezra gave him.

Waves is a very cute shifter x human romance.
The relationship and the interactions between the characters are adorable, but the story has some major plot holes and leaves you with many unresolved questions, especially about the nature and origins of Kai.

The ending was confusing, and feels almost unfinished.
It definitely has potential for more.

I adore Waves. The relationship with Kai and Ezra is just so beautiful and sweet, like cozying up in bed on a rainy day with a hot cup of cocoa. If you're looking for a low angst relaxing read, this one's for you. I'm so excited to read the rest of this collection.

Yes well I loved....HOW CAN YOU NOT LOVED WHEN HE'S SO GOOD?

I loved it it's so comforting and sounding and just distressing enough But oh god with a happy ending that sweetens you to the core.

And please don't get me started on that extra? Epilogue?I don't know but god was so good now I have the urge to read an angsty period romance about reincarnation

For most of the first half, I really liked this book, and I feel like the concept had a lot of potential. Kai was a great character and I loved watching him develop over the story, but Ezra - who started out as decently likable - ended up doing more than a few things that were really off-putting to me, to the point that I was uncomfortable reading a few scenes. I wish he and Kai had talked more about some things, and much less about others - Ezra ended up coming across as selfish, unfair, and even manipulative in some scenes. By the end, there were too many unresolved plot points for me to feel able to give this a higher rating - when I finished the book, I was sure I would see a sequel mentioned in the author notes at the end, only to find a note that instead indicated it is a standalone. It's a shame, because I'd have liked to know for sure that Kai ended up happy, with or without Ezra. The author is a good writer, and others might not be bothered by the same things I was - so this book might just be a case of "not for me," but these are my two cents.

I had some trouble with this one. While there were things I liked, there were also things that took a lot away from the story for me.

I received an ARC and this is my unbiased opinion

Ezra and Kai's story was filled with all those wonderful romantic moments and feels that happen when people who are meant to be find each other. A very well-written story and lovely characters made for a highly enjoyable read.

The book starts out with our main character Ezra, who is a marine biology in Massachusetts studying harbor seals, finding tall, gorgeous, and extremely naked man on the beach. Ezra, being the good person he is, gives our naked friend a pair of sweatpants and goes merrily on his way to the gym. What Ezra doesn’t know is the reason our tall, gorgeous, and extremely naked friend was naked on the beach. As it turns out, he was looking for his sealskin. He’s a selkie.

For those of you who might not know what a selkie it, a selkie is a creature that can shift between appearing as a human and a seal by taking off their sealskin. In most stories, they appear as females. The usual story focuses on a fisherman who comes across a selkie and steals her sealskin to make her stay with him and they have kids. She eventually finds her sealskin and she then goes back to the ocean. Sometimes she takes the kids with her because they are part selkie as well. Stealing someone’s sealskin is great basis for a loving relationship.

Our selkie is familiar with Ezra. As stated, Ezra studies harbor seals and our naked friend, who doesn’t have a name quite yet, lives a good chunk of his life as one. He recognizes Ezra as someone who isn’t a threat like the fishermen. He has nice eyes. He’s a seal. He’s not too cerebral. He likes what he sees in Ezra and feels safe. Eventually, he starts seeking him out. Meeting him on the beach seems like fate to him. He’s intrigued at this point, but he’s a seal and his main concerns are eating and finding a nice rock to sun himself. Tracking him down for a relationship isn’t a concern so that’s not part of the plot.

On the way back from the gym, and after sushi with his best friend Mary, Ezra finds our selkie still looking for his sealskin. After a brief conversation, and some miscommunication, the author gives our friend a name: Kai.

The plot from here is a bit slow. That’s one of my issues with the book. Kai isn’t the most exciting character. He’s never really interacted with humans before. Ezra doesn’t find out about him being a selkie until they go looking and finding his sealskin, about five chapters after they formally meet. Ezra thinks Kai is homeless. Mary thinks Kai might be dangerous. Kai is just taking everything is and getting used to being around people.

Once Kai does get used to being around Ezra, the plot does pick up. There is some major angst with Ezra’s ex-fiancé Thom so please read the warnings at the beginning of the book. There’s some angst which isn’t mentioned in the warnings.

When Kai is in his selkie form, he loses track of time. He’s a seal, and as I said, all he cares about is eating and sunning himself. At one point, he’s gone for a month. Ezra is frantic because the state declared open hunting season on harbor seals. He was afraid that someone had killed Kai. It’s a pretty hard scene to read, but it’s one of the best, if not the best in the book. Just be careful when come to it.

I give the book a solid 3 stars. I wish the plot moved quicker. I wish Kai was a bit more interesting earlier on, but that was the author’s choice. I do recommend it. I enjoyed it. It was an easy read. I hope you enjoy it too.

Ezra and Kai’s story is a beautiful one of two souls meant to be together, spanning time and space as we think of it. Ezra is a marine biologist living in a small town on the Massachusetts coast, studying seals especially, along with other marine life. Kai appears to him one day striding out of the ocean nude, telling Ezra he has lost his coat and must find it. Kai has been living as a seal for a long, long time, not interacting much with humans until the day he is drawn to one and returns to land.

Sort of a shifter-type tale, but one couched in ancient myths, the selkie.

The characters of Kai and Ezra draw the reader into their tale and pull them along as the attraction and chemistry builds and an odd relationship develops. There is an unexplained pull between the two, not known by either one as to why, but unmistakable and unbreakable. As the two try to find a way to be together, outside forces torment Ezra creating difficulties. Two loyal friends and a large black dog play important parts as the story unfolds. Not your average “shifter” tale, but one I had to read in one sitting. Loved this book.

Waves is an MM shifter romance between a human and a selkie. Ezra left his abusive fiance right before their wedding and is now leading a mostly solitary life with his dog and focused on his work as a marine biologist studying seals when he encounters a nude man on the beach. Kai has known no other life but as a seal eating and sleeping away the days when he suddenly starts being drawn to land. When they meet, romance blooms, but can their love overcome Kai’s nature?

I thought this book was such a tender romance. The story went with the flow and had a calm quality to its storytelling. The romance was understated and fast but still felt natural and authentic. I liked both main characters. Ezra still struggles with his own self worth and his ex who is clinging on in the periphery of his life as he is swept away by his new found love. Kai, meanwhile, struggles to overcome his need to return to the sea where his mind becomes less human and more animal with few recollections of the life he leads on land. Their coming together feels predestined and the epilogue “The Beginning” was such a nice touch (although I did get confused as to who was supposed to be whom).

Waves is a tender gay contemporary romance that is sweet and low stakes.

I have never read anything by Howl Avery before I read this book. I'll be honest, the stunning cover is what caught my eye, then I read the description and was further reeled in. Upon starting this book we get Ezra's POV when he first comes across someone walking out of the ocean naked... And later that same day, the man he saw earlier in the morning was still walking along the beach. So, Ezra being the kind person he is, offers to take Kai back to his house to warm up. From there, these two men slowly get to know each other over time, and their friendship morphs into a relationship.

I enjoyed this story, I really liked Kai's character. The way Howl Avery wrote about Kai being a selkie was really interesting, the aspect of Kai having to go back to the ocean every couple of days was a really cool aspect. And having that be a component to this story also made a challenge for Kai and Ezra to work through with them pursuing a relationship with each other. I also liked how open Ezra was, he didn't even freak out when he figured out Kai was part sea. And Ishmael was definitely my favorite character, hands down! The fact that he was such a prominent character and was apart of the story throughout everything was just so amazing. The scenes where he kept bring his lobster toy to Kai was soo cute!!

Overall a cute, quick, and interesting story to read.

When I read the description for this book I was intrigued, and upon reading it I have to say that the author did a good job in writing a story that I feel like I’ve never seen/read before. It was honestly slow to get into for me, I didn’t really find it interesting until about half way through, but Kai and Ezra’s story is just too adorable to not want to know what happens next. This book gives you all the emotional turmoil of someone going through a long distance relationship but also shows you what a healthy relationship should be. I love the world building and the characters and how everything ties together. Also, the little snippet at the end that goes to the beginning of what is essentially Kai and Ezra’s story was actually very helpful to really understanding what happened in the book. Although I can’t decide if it would have been better to have that information at the beginning of the story or if you needed the story to really understand the snippet. Regardless, this book was such a cute little read, and for anyone who likes a good MM romance with a cute love story than this book is for you. Ezra would go out on his boat to do research seals and record his findings.
He was riding his bike to the gym, as he rode past the beach he saw a naked man walking along the shoreline.

Kai (Phoca vitulina) also known as a harbor seal. Kai would go back and forth from sea to land, getting lost in one world and spending two days in the other.
While walking the beach he saw the man from the boat and realized he has a chance to meet him in person after all this time.

Erza and Kai see each other at the beach and it would change both of their lives, lives that come from a different point of view.

I love the way Kai would tell his view of humans/food/things, also love the gentleness he had towards Erza.

Ishmael is Ezra's dog and loves playing with his toys, especially a stuffed lobster.

(Without giving any spoilers)
I wished Erza's friend Mary would of asked her relative for more information about the selkie and the coat situation, maybe it will come out in a future book it was still a good book to read.

Erza and Kai had a wonderful ending to their story that had you feeling their sadness to their joy.

If you like paranormal, MM and slow burn storyline you'll enjoy this book.

Okay, let me start by saying this is a good book. But it did take me a bit to get into the story. I believe this is because it is a smidge different than other shifter romances, which is not a bad thing at all. Ezra is a human that happens upon a naked man walking the beach. He decides to help the man by taking him home for a rest and some time to warm up before heading out to find his coat. His coat? Yeah, see "Kai" is a seal shifter and a wave made him lose his unexpectedly. Things happen and Ezra decides to help Kai with his plight with befriending him. When Kai decides it is time to find his coat and move back to his beloved ocean, Ezra gets a hint of the shifter world. Though he doesn't understand what he saw. When they are reunited, the relationship shifts again. This time to a more intimate one. I did enjoy reading how Kai, never a lover of humans, and Ezra grow closer and expand their relationship. It is not necessarily a slow burn kind of thing, but it does happen over a six-month period. It is sweet and shows Kai that not humans are a waste of his time when he finds not only the love of his life but a small family of friends as well. Waves is a sweet and emotional love story. Ezra and Kai’s journey is beautiful, and their story shows the sacrifices and patience true love endures. Waves is a shifter story that is unique, not just in the type of shifter that Kai is, but in other characteristics and restraints that are imposed. It is both refreshingly different and heartbreaking. I know it is a good book because I’m not sure how I feel about certain parts of it, yet I can’t stop thinking about them.

I appreciate when books have kids or pets, so I was quite happy Ishmael found his forever home with Ezra. I loved some of his antics, especially his reaction to Thom. Thom’s character satisfied another box that I like to have checked in a good book. I like when books have characters I love to hate because of the drama they provide.

Waves has a beautiful ending, even if it wasn’t quite what I was expecting. Actually, this book was unique in a lot of ways. It had the feel of a love letter in a bottle tossed in the sea for some sweet soul to find and relive a story through the passage of time and memories. It was beautiful.

Ohhh man I seriously loved this book! Personally, I don't know a whole lot about selkies and their lore, but this book made me fall in love! 🥰💕 Anything about mystical sea creatures is right up my alley, and this book was such a sweet love story all wrapped around that.

I loved how easy going Kai was, how he just went with the flow and did his best to accommodate to living on land with smiles, shrugs, and saying "sure." So cute!! And I could feel every inch of anxiety Ezra felt, with not knowing who Kai was, and ultimately learning he's not entirely human, and what comes with that. Oh, and their little forehead touches was the most adorable thing ever.

The romance felt so steady and realistic, despite the supernatural element. 🤭 Nothing felt too fast or rushed, I appreciated both the MCs patience with each other! It only made me love them more. And without spoiling anything... That very last chapter? Absolutely perfect 👌✨

Wow! Great story! Before starting the book, I wasn’t too sure about a romance between a seal and a human, but the story drew me in within the first couple of pages. I was keen to read more and see how the story evolved & I didn’t want to put the book down. There was so much about this book that I loved, including Kai’s unfailing support of Ezra, and also the way Kai thought. He had a distinctly seal way of thinking about things which I found quite humorous at times. It’s a wonderful, sweet love story, although they have to navigate a variety of difficulties, some of them peculiar to being a seal, some related to being a human, to find their HEA.

There’s an aspect to their love which for me held a touch of sadness, while at the same time there was a joy in that same thing. I won’t say more because I don’t want to give away any of the story.

I highly recommend this book.

I recieved this as an ARC from Book sirens and I want to thank them for that.
I have to say I don't think I have read a book about a Selkie before. So that is definitely a plus for me. This is an adorable story of Ezra, a marine biologist, who is learning to love again after leaving a bad engagement. Then there is Kai, the selki, learning to be human and love a human.
The book moves kind of slow for me. If the book was a little shorter I think I could have enjoyed the story more. I did enjoy that we got the emotional long distance relationship but it still was a healthy relationship no jealousy on the two characters part.
Kai was a sweet character and it was nice to see him experiencing the human world. With Ezra I wanted to wrap in a hug after finding out what kind of person Thom was. I cheered when he finally stood up to him. And Mary was a good best friend .to Ezra too.
This was a cute story maybe a little too long for my taste. I give this a
3 out of 5 stars.

I loved the idea of this story so much, and there are lots of lovely moments (forehead bonks for the win) and a strong connection between Ezra and Kai. Kai, also, is a really interesting and compelling character and deserves all good things—better, in fact, than I think he actually gets.
There are some elements here that I found problematic— Mary, the friend, has a lot of toxic attitudes and expectations, and these aren’t really challenged or even questioned. Speaking of toxic, Ezra can be pushy and manipulative — I get that he has *reasons*, but he also has choices, and sometimes, I think, he makes some deeply wrong ones. Despite a few rough edges, however, I did ultimately find a lot to enjoy here, so I’d give this 3.5 stars rounded up to 4.

"Nothing could change him, but nothing was also what could keep us apart"

This is book 1 in a new series called Inhuman Love Collection by Howl Avery. Each book is a standalone, set in the same universe. This was a new to me author and I'm excited to read more in this series.

What a magical story, a human and a selkie pairing. I really enjoyed this story and was sad when it ended. These two guys were made for each other. It's almost like they were fated to be together.

Will they find a way to be together, when Kai the selkie needs the ocean? You'll have to read the story to find out.

Chance meeting, some angst with past fiance, human/paranormal mating, brings some heat

When I got the chance to read the ARC of this book I jumped at it, this book is right up my alley.

This was a nice and pleasant read, unfortunately, nothing special about it.
I felt like the ex-fiancè bit went on for too long, and I got quite bored since it wasn't particularly engaging seeing the character always do the same things over and over again.
The relationship between Kai and Ezra was cute, too insta-love for my taste and the chemistry was lukewarm at best.

I received this book for free. This does not impact my review in any shape or form.

Waves, by Howl Avery, is the first in the Inhuman Love Collection, and delves into the surprisingly wholesome relationship between a male selkie and his human counterpart. The book is separated by month. May introduces Ezra, a marine biologist who had recently broken up with his fiancé, and Kai, a male selkie who had lost his coat and their meet cute. June demonstrates just how difficult it is for selkies and humans to be intimate, although it’s more than clear that the two are infatuated with one another. July and August showcase the lengths that Kai and Ezra are willing to go to protect each other, and September leaves readers with a promise that, while Kai needs to go back into the ocean, he will return to Ezra, as he always does and always will.

Personally, I feel the way Avery ended this relationship was absolutely perfect. Humanity’s always had a penchant of trying to conquer things that shouldn’t be conquered, especially with nature. So it’s comforting to know that already, Ezra is going against the flow; he’s keeping track of the seal populations, doing what he can to keep them safe even before he met Kai. He respects nature, which is a refreshing turn of events. And yes, that tendency did rear its ugly head when he tried forcing Kai to choose between himself and the ocean, but nonetheless, I’m glad he was able to prioritize Kai’s wellbeing. I also liked how he wasn’t forcing Kai to stay with him, although the kitty pool was a nice touch. We tend to love things we can’t keep, so for Ezra to demonstrate this much maturity makes me admire his character. Should Avery ever decide to write more about this couple, I would love to read it.

Needless to say, Thom is an asshole. He will always be an asshole. I loved the support system that Ezra had in Mary and Eric. In a way, it felt like Ezra and Kai were in their own little fairytale, and when they were ready to come out, those two were waiting. I did feel at times they were distracting from the romance, but their presences were welcome nonetheless. As such, I would give this book a 4.5 out of 5 stars.

There are many things that should be illegal; one of which happens to be how Howl Avery manages to make my heart hurt with warmth and fuzziness. We honestly should take a moment to appreciate how beautiful his books are, no matter how short they are.

This book follows the story of Ezra a marine biologist of studies seals (it's fated) and meets a selkie - kai - and they immediately fall in love, although the only problem they face is the fact that Kai can't stay away from water for a long time and Ezra has douche bag of an ex-fiancé (we'll get there in a sec, boy do I have some things to say about this guy)

This book proves to be one of the most overwhelmingly cute books ever. Like Kai and Ezra are so silly together.

His species was notoriously quiet, and the males only vocalized for mating calls. I laughed to myself at the thought of being catcalled.

The only person I think who made wanna chuck my phone at the wall was Thom (you can just see from the added H to the name that he's a major arse). Thom is Ezra's ex-fiancé. Some time ago, Ezra called off the wedding two days prior because he caught Thom cheating with his students. But this guy had the audacity to stalk Ezra even a year after that, he has major problems if you ask me.
"They were just my students, Ezra!"
"When are you going to fucking get over it?"
You see? So this guy likes to do the horizontal Hula with his students, but he's all like; they're just my students, who cares? I don't know what's worse; the fact that he screws with his students and thinks it's not a problem and is parading it around like it's something to be proud of, or that he had sex with them and thinks they're just disposable objects and Ezra needs to get over it and marries him already.

Rant is over, I enjoyed this book immensely, and I recommend it to anyone who's in a reading slump who's looking for something cute and cozy to read, it was a fast read and not boring at all. I also recommend reading the next book in the series, because while this is so cute and brilliant, the next on is one of my favorite books of 2023

⭐⭐⭐ 3.5

I have mixed feelings about the story. I chose this ARC solely because of the character names 😅 they have sentimental value to me, and finding those specific names together in one book was… I don't know… it caught my attention.

The story starts a little slow, getting boring at times, but still entertaining enough to keep you reading. I liked that it wasn't your typical mermaid story yada, yada… that was interesting.

Although I never quite understood the whole thing about Kai's “coat.”

The truth is that you could replace the fact that Kai is a Selkie with anything else and the story could continue without problems. The fact that he is an inhuman creature is quite irrelevant. He could very well be a CIA or FBI agent investigating trafficking of prohibited substances in that area that involves fishermen, that would explain his absence, and why he cannot give his full name or talk about his work.

As for Ezra, it really bothered me that he didn't stand up for himself against Thom's lies, that he allowed that crazy guy to not only break his heart, beat him, cost him his house. And on top of that, he basically took away his friends. And still a year later, Ezra did nothing to defend himself. Not even saying why he canceled the wedding 😐

The ending… what kind of ending is that!? I didn't feel like there was any closure… what's going to happen now? What are Ezra and Kai living arrangement going to be? Is Kai going to be in and out for the rest of their lives? Is he immortal? The extra chapter doesn't help much either, if not at all. It doesn't explain how Kai became a Selkie, it doesn't say if there are more Selkies in the world… nothing!

Don't get me wrong.

I cried, I laughed, I fell in love with the characters (except Thom and company, I hope a shark eats them). I enjoyed the book, seriously, but I have too many questions and I didn't like that ending at all.

WAVES is the first book in the Inhuman Love Collection and we start off with a selkie and a marine biologist. I loved how the first bit with Ezra was titled with his name, but the first bit with Kai was titled with what he was. A small detail, but one I liked.

There were a few things in this I didn't like - the ex-fiance for one, but then, I wasn't supposed to. I thought there would be more to his storyline as it seemed like a big deal but then it sort of fizzled out. Also Mary and Eric. I know Mary was Ezra's BFF but it felt like she was a little pushy. Eric was nice most of the time but jumping to conclusions when someone is injured isn't a good way to be. Some of the side characters didn't add anything to the story either in my opinion.

What I did like was the constant affection between Kai and Ezra. The forehead touches were so sweet and I loved those. And things like the pool and trying to get the pH levels right to imitate the sea. That's a love language right there. There was an occasion when Ezra is being slightly forward with Kai, but Kai did agree and ended up enjoying it, so I guess it worked out. It just felt a little icky considering Kai's preferences up to that point.

On the whole, I enjoyed this story and that epilogue was so sad! It left me with so many questions though, I'll admit! I definitely recommend this book and look forward to reading more in the series.

An enjoyable escape to the ocean

"I knew he loved me, and I loved him. Nothing could change him, but nothing was also what could keep us apart."

This is not your typical romance with fated mates. It's a full tide bringing in new discoveries to the tide pools and the low tide revealing everything left behind. It's the cycles of tides changing through the seasons and learning to flow with the tides. This is a slower paced, drawn out romance.

Ezra is a quiet man dedicated to the marine sciences and protecting seals. He's trying to escape a past abusive relationship with a man who doesn't want to let him go. His quiet routine is disrupted by finding Kai, a selkie who really doesn't care to human that much and loves naps.

Ezra and Kai find love quickly, but they struggle to figure out how to make a relationship work when Kai is driven by his biology to return to the sea.

I enjoyed the psychological aspect of Ezra and Kai learning how to be together. Ezra has a lot to heal from with his ex and Kai has to learn how to human and exist with a human. They are mostly sweet together and they love Ishmael, Ezra's rescue dog.

The intimate relationship development between them is interesting as Kai doesn't really get the point of a lot of human desires at first or why they would be more pleasurable than napping.

Overall if you want something different to read, this will provide several hours of escape to the ocean and beach.

I liked:
Ezra and Kai - the two of them were easy together. I love a good fish-out-of-water, but Kai was refreshingly low-key about the changes to the human world instead of the more common comedically-confused type. The sex was also down to earth in a believably sexy sort of way.

The beginning/epilogue - I'm not big on soulmates, and so I'm glad the main story didn't push too hard on that idea, but I do love the bittersweet weight of centuries added to a tale.

Of two minds about:
The twist on keeping the coat - Ezra denying Kai his coat, even as a temporary delay, felt shocking for his character, when Kai was clearly in pain. Restricting freedom is obviously not okay. But the anxiety about seal hunters, and fearing for his life was a dramatic enough reason to even attempt it. It mirrors the traditional selkie myth and attempts to give an explanation for it.

I could have done without:
The whole Thom ex-boyfriend plotline. Far and away my least favorite part.
(I know I just said I liked the MCs easy, low-angst vibe, but I would take more separation-anxiety internal conflict over an ex shoehorned in.)

The friends who knew the ex was abusive and allowed him to remain in their lives. Yes they eventually kicked him out of a party... over a year later. Just the whole ex

This was a sweet, slightly strange love story between a marine biologist and a selkie. The connection between Ezra and Kai felt tenuous and there were times when I felt that the relationship between them just wasn’t for the best? I think Kai’s concerns about Ezra waiting for him constantly whilst he was in his seal form were valid – time passed differently, and although Kai truly cared for Ezra, when he was a seal that caring was very much in the back of his mind.

I think for me I found that I didn’t actually care very much about the relationship between the two leads. I found myself wondering so much more about Ezra’s relationship with Thom, how it ended and just why he wasn’t reporting Thom for his behaviour. I also struggled with what felt like Ezra’s self imposed loneliness – he had friends who made it so obvious that they cared about him, yet he constantly acted surprised that he had these friends.

I’m struggling with this review because I feel like it is a disconnect from my end rather than the actual story. Ezra was too easy-going about things but then he turned almost too much in the other direction, trying to force Kai to remain on land.

As I say, I think the disconnect is mine and that the story is well worth a look if you like the idea of a selkie falling in love with a human.

~ Diana

3.5 stars An okay debut book for the author.
A good begining for the story but I thought it sounded familiar to others in this theme.
Ezra was a nature protector of the seas especially keeping an eye on the Seal numbers of his small town.
Going to the gym, he helps a naked stranger by the sea out of his prodiciment by giving him some trackies for warmth.
Phoca or Kai he was later named was a seal shifter without his special coat he lost and didnt now what he’d do without it.
The scenes progress with Kai being secretive about his answers when Ezra offers a room for the night later when they meet up again.
Ezra was being hassled by a possessive Ex which he doesnt take seroiusly until later, those scenes are brillantly written and I’d caution readers who have dealt with this as a trigger. The story was a bit differant being a seal shifter romance as Kai had no social connections from humans or other seal colonies as he was by himself. A slow romance which happens over the course of 6 months for their HEA. Waves includes time skips for when Kai is at sea. This has a small amount of sexy scenes between them for their romance.
