Megan Derr is one of my most treasured findings this year -- I wonder why it took so long for me to try her stories. Probably has to do with my reluctance to read anything resembling full-on fantasy, regency, or historical. Well, I'm glad that I finally give her a chance.

This free(!) story is another aww-worthy piece from Megan Derr. I'm a bit surprised when in the beginning, Huey, the peasant, is punished by the King because he beaten the royal cook half-to-death and he doesn't feel sorry at all. Violent thoughts are not common from those Megan Derr's stories I've read! However, in her wonderful writing style, Megan Derr tells us the reason why Huey is so angry and what makes him do that horrible thing.

Then there's the licking dragon -- OMG, so cute!! I don't read many stories with dragon that seems so fond of licking humans *lol*. There is a wonderful twist in the end, and well, it leaves me with a huge smile on my face.

Thanks for the recommendation, Cleon!

4 stars for a lovely little Dragon story

What a wonderful sweet and funny little shortie about a young man who receives a penalty to cook a dragon stew to the king. As a savior pops a real live dragon up and an agreement is made. Help with the stew for a night with the dragon.
‘It moved ever so slightly closer – then licked him.
“Yes” came a decisive tone. “You are good.”

description

“You are a very pretty treasure. I will take very good care of you.”
Huey ducked his head, face hot. “I am not pretty and humans can’t be treasure. That book said dragons only like shiny or bright things.”
“You shine. You are very bright. You smell good and taste good and are very, very pretty.”

Thanks sweet Deeze for the rec about this little cute freebie.

I LIKE - 15 pages and a big smile from me

A young baker is punished for a crime and forced to take over for the royal cook and create dragon stew for the king. He also has to contend with a rather unusual kitchen helper.

Behold a dragon fetish begins.

Young Huey went on a rampage on the King's cook. In a rage, the King ordered Huey to be whipped after his answer to why he beat up the cook was, 'Because he deserved it.'

Derr teases why the cook was so deserving of such brutal punishment. I actually cared. How is this my first time reading this author?

The passages continued to drip with talent and awe as Huey faced a great challenge. After receiving the aforementioned whips, Huey was told that he must make the cook's dragon stew to the King's tastes or face death.

This was a tall order. Huey, who had experience in the kitchen as the son of a deceased baker and owner of a small bakery, had no clue what the fuck dragon stew was.

The rest of the kitchen staff were in the dark too since the unpleasant, egg-shaped cook was very reticent to share such information. Huey works hard to make sure that he at least gets everything else right- even cooking for the King on the nights before the night of the dragon stew.

He gets an unlikely ally in the king's advisor Cass who was handsome, charming, mischievous and so obviously Huey's romantic interest

Eventually, Huey finds help in the unlikeliest of places and justice is served with regards to the cook.

This was a delightful little read.

I am off to get my next dragon fix.

I read this short a while ago and forgot about it, it made it back into my feed and I went back and reread it.

I love dragons !
There, I've said it and I am always happy to find a cute story about a dragon ( or two, or three). This one was not only cute, even if Huey might not think all that licking is cute, and it is free .
Huey is in trouble, big big trouble, he might be able to get out of it, but he needs dragon fire and has no clue where to come by that, let alone what it is.
Low and behold a dragon appears and is ready to strike a bargain with Huey.
My only complaint was that it ended right when it started to get really interesting. I want more.

3.5 Stars! Soooo cute!

There was so much potential here, and I understand that this was a short, just written for fun, but I really wish the author would reconsider expanding on this story. I loved the characters, and would enjoy seeing where this could go. The set-up is there already, just build on it...pretty please! I could see myself getting lost in this world!

The author's got skills!

A fun and sweet fairy tale romance that has the extra bonus of being free to read online. The story focuses on Huey, a humble baker who, as punishment for attacking the royal cook, is tasked with making the King’s dragon stew. And if the stew isn’t up to snuff, faces death. Huey doesn’t think he’s going to survive the week, but fortunately for him, he isn’t alone as he finds a very possessive dragon stalking his kitchen, very eager to help.

It’s a sweet read, and Huey and the mysterious dragon’s chemistry is very fun. (And I loved it when Huey compared the happily rumbling dragon to a giant scaly cat.) Also, at over 12,000 words, it’s a pretty solid short story for being a free read.

Recommended for anyone looking for a fun and light fairy tale. The story is housed on Derr’s website.

Nice short story. It's online and free, which is awesome! I loved the dragon and the ending was cute. If, like me, you are not the worlds biggest fan of fantasy stories, but you always want to try something new, give this one a go. I found it really good and I always like the authors writing, so she is one of the very few fantasy authors I would always try.

I loved this. Short but well-developed, with great characters; a touching backstory, some predictability, but also some twists I didn't expect. Very enjoyable and highly recommended. Made me smile all the way through. I love dragon/olden times fantasy, and this little story goes right to the top.

Very cute short story. I loved how Megan slowly added more details so that just when you think you are missing a key piece of information, she shares more. Huey and the "Dragon" will be very cute together.

Such a lovely story, I loved it so much~ Way too short though.. The truth about the dragon didn't surprise me at all, though it didn't ruin the story at all. I loved the dragon and I loved Huey. Very nice, defenitely recommended.

This has always been an absolute favourite of mine! The dragon was so not traditional, this unexpected creature not of anger and destruction but instead clever, sneaky, and helping with baking. And also much licking. The main character, the troubled baker, has such a story that getz pulled out of him full of such heartbreak that seeing how he made such a happy and busy life besides that is a lot of fun. Love this little short!

This short story is just delicious. A fairy-tale plot that was engaging and different and very, very satisfying. I was instantly in love with the dragon. The moment the refined lord Cassarah reveals he's in fact the pure mischief of a dragon made me grin like a happy fool. Oh how I'd like to see the little baker thoroughly licked...

For some reasons there's a lot of books I didn't add to my read shelf...

This was a good read though. Short, and good for passing the time.
