Teach Me

Rate this book
When she was eight, Allison Starr began spending her summers with her aunt in San Diego. Nearly ten years later she is focused on her last year of high school and which colleges to apply to, not the attractive surfer who keeps showing up at the little corner of beach where she reads.

She has no interest in a romantic relationship, especially one that starts in the summer and would be long distance. Ali tries to ignore him, but finds the boy on the beach much more distracting than the words in her books.

Cooper Perez has never surfed the same beach this many days in a row. He just can’t seem to change spots until he has the courage to talk to the girl who is always reading her books in the shade. When he finally approaches her he is overwhelmed with the instant attraction he feels for this beautiful and intelligent girl, even though she is three years younger.

Cooper and Allison spend the rest of the summer together discovering their love of many things, including each other. Summer eventually comes to an end, but their love does not. Allison heads home to start her senior year, but an opportunity brings Cooper closer to Allison than either of them would have expected.

Mr. Perez is the new English teacher at Allison’s high school.

Has it really only been a week since I read When Summer Ends? I must have wanted to move on more than I'd thought because in my mind, it seems like I read that book ages ago.

The day after I finished WSE, I thought I'd try out another book with the same subject in order to see if I could do better, so I picked up Teach Me.
Teach me, Coop...teach me how to not love you anymore.

I didn't end up posting a review when I read this because I didn't want to put out into the universe of GR two similar thought processes on the same subject back-to-back. So I figured I'd wait a little while, then review. In no time during the course of my history of reviewing has this ever been a good idea. Short term memory + me = fail. Ask me what I was wearing on my first day of kindergarten and I'll recall intricate detail. Ask me what I was wearing yesterday and I'll stare at you like you just grew two heads.

Thankfully, I do have a few notes in my book to refer back to. Sadly, the notes I have aren't very descriptive.

In all honesty, it might be me with the problem and not the book. I think my love affair with student/teacher love affairs might finally be coming to an end (why does this make me so sad? I had a good run there for a while). There's been a buzz book going around on my feed lately with a pretty, flashy, multi-colored something on it and people are heralding it with 5 star reviews...but it's another student/teacher book and the blurb looks exactly like something I've read several times before. So, alas, I might have to pass on it.

Here were my random notes/markings

~ This is a dual PoV book. If you like reading the male's PoV as the story unfolds, you might enjoy this.

~I highlighted a passage where Cooper was sitting across the street from Ali's house getting drunk, spying on her. Note : Stalker much?

~ This note would be a spoiler, so no go without tags

~ Mother effing unnecessary epilogues. I am hating the trend of "telling too much about the future." It's okay sometimes to let the future just be unspoken and full of hope.

I didn't honestly care for this book but I couldn't bring myself to 1 star it because I felt like Teach Me was a step up from When Summer Ends. This was a simple, sweet, love story. I would have liked it at one point in time when I hadn't read other, better, student/teacher books with more depth. Some people might still enjoy it now. I honestly wish I could have.

If you've never read a student/teacher love story, you might end up liking Teach Me just fine. If you've read a few s/t books before, chances are, you won't find anything unique which stands out about this book.

The following isn't quite a love/drug reference but it comes close enough. Either way, it was something I couldn't pass on mentioning because it generally bugs me to see extreme phrasing such as this.
I had been drowning, and he was not only my life vest, but also my oxygen.

Ugh. No.

Sobbing like a bitch while writing this [Happy tears mind you]

First things first, Gotta love dual pov books <3 I love knowing how the guy feels about the girl. You can call it cheap thrills but its just utterly romantic when penned down what a guy thinks when he's in love with his girl. Its just to *sigh* perfect! All his thoughts, the love, everything. Just beautiful <3

Cooper Ryan Perez <3 I LOVE FUCKING LOVE YOU WITH EVERY BEAT OF MY HEART.
Allison Marie Starr, Sweet, strong, adorable and pretty AND just amazing. Love her innocence, her love and her.
The chemistry in the book is adorable! There isn't much steam in the book if that's what you want.. but there is true love and a shit load of chemistry, Like Hoot Hoot.. its overflowing with love and chemistry. :D

I LOVED THIS BOOK, Made me sob :P and laugh and blush and fall in love with both the characters!

“You gave her your heart, and now she will fight to keep it beating.” :') :') :') :')

Hmm, well when reading everyone's reviews I had a very different expectation of this book. I will admit it was a good story, but now is where I agree with those before me that it was definitely lacking in some areas. There really could have been more interaction between them, and while the author seemed to indicate the Ali knew Coops story and all about him, as a reader we knew almost nothing. I think the author really could have spent more time giving us details into the story that would have absolutely made the characters much more fully dimensional and well-rounded. As they were, the characters were all flat and the emotional attachment just wasn't there. My belief in this feeling was definitely justified when I didn't get emotional once at any point. I read so many reviews of people saying they cried for the last quarter of the book, but to me the story and characters were so flat and just on paper that none of it really affected me. Now, all that being said, I did truly enjoy reading a book where both the main characters are educated, intelligent, hard-working people and neither of them was a slut, or emotionally scarred by their past abuse. Both Ali and Coop were refreshing in their honesty and goodness. I would love to see that in books more often but I get that it's harder to sell to most of the readers in the world.

Overall, decent book. Quick and easy read that I appreciated but just wished I could have been offered more by. It had all the potential in the world to be a standout novel but it fell short and ended up simply being mediocre.

Dang, I tried...I really did. When I started this story it kept my interest. The relationship between Coop and Ali was decently developed and the mutual respect they showed one another was lovely. Although, once summer ended and they parted ways, that's where the story fell apart. At least for me.

It felt like the author was writing without an outline. It became choppy and lacked flow as well as having a few editing issues with missing and/or double words. Even though Ms. Steele attempted some serious drama at the end, it was too cheeseball with the constant "I love you's" which never allowed the reader to feel like there could be road blocks ahead.

I had high hopes for this one but was left with an unrealistic, perfectly tied bow, instead.

Warning: Major Spoilers!

I was actually disappointed in this book. I wanted more. I feel like I didn't know too much about either of the main characters, Ali or Cooper, especially Cooper, which was odd since it was told in alternating points of view.

Ali notices Cooper (and vice versa) on the beach during her summer with her aunt, suddenly they are dating, within the blink of an eye they are in love. Before you know it there's a mix up and he's her teacher, almost the entire year FLIES. She's suddenly sick and needs emergency surgery (the book randomly turned serious out of nowhere), next thing you know Cooper is proposing, there's a quick no, then of course a yes, you are lead to believe she doesn't make it out of surgery, but learn she does when the last chapter is randomly told from her fathers point of view two years later on their wedding day.

The story was sweet, but this book needed to slow down. I would have loved more dialogue, more focus on the characters (both main and secondary) - seriously, most of the secondary characters were just names.

Basically, the entire book was completely rushed, which is unfortunate because it could have been good.

10 stars without a second thought

A book that gives you an idea how true and unconditional looks like!

Cooper and Alison are two young persons that they meet in the summer and fall head over heels in love with each other.

But, because of a twist of fate, they end up being caught in a very difficult situation from they are struggling to get their love out of there unharmed.

Cooper is a 20-ish-year-old guy who has finished college and he's getting ready to start teaching with the start of the new school year in September. During his vacation time in San Diego, he gets to meet Alison. He first caught eye on her while surfing at the beach where she used to go and read. And that is the time that everything changes for him! He starts coming back to that beach hopeful that he's going to see her again. And finally, he finds the courage to go and talk to her.

Alison is a 17-almost-18-year-old girl who loves books and is getting ready for her final year in Senior High School. The summer before that year, she spends her summer break with her aunt who lives in San Diego. She has found a spot at a beach where she goes every day and read her book. But fate has a very strange way to bring two people, who are meant to be, together. Ali, one of these days, she notices a very hot guy surfing and she can't get her eyes (and her mind afterwards) off him. Only if she knew that that hot guy was in the same situation as her!

They start spending almost every awake second together after Cooper asked her out that time on the beach. To their great displease, summer soon comes to an end so these two lovers have to part because school is starting, although they promise that this doesn't mean that their relationship is over.

But, things get quickly twisted, when Cooper finds himself teaching -because of a mix-up with another school-, not only in the same school that Alison attends, but also being her English teacher. And so they start going down a road where they try hard to figure out what to do to save their love without Cooper losing his job or going to jail. Throughout the first months, they are going through some very difficult situations and challenges.

But, the ultimate challenge, especially for Cooper, is when Alison almost dies because of a genetically heart problem. And that where Cooper shows how strong his feelings are for Ali and that he would do ANYTHING so she can be ok.

A love story that will put countless times your heart into breaking-into-million-pieces mode and, at the same time, will put in your face the stupidest and most ridiculous grin that you could possibly ever had.

3.5 Stars...

This small part of the beach changed my life, and the girl holding my hand changed my heart...

Allison and Cooper met on the beach at the beginning of the summer. Ali, an almost 18 year old high school senior, was staying for the summer with her Aunt Trudy. Cooper, only 21, is already a college graduate due to some accelerated program in high school/college. They hit it off right away and spend the whole summer together. They fall in love. The summer ends and they vow to stay together and stay in touch. Cooper took a teaching job at a middle school hours away and Ali goes back home to her dad and to start her senior year of high school. Some things got mixed up, and Cooper finds out last minute he is actually supposed to be teaching high school English. At Ali’s school. And he is her teacher. Talk about complications. Something dramatic happens at the end that changes them both and their relationship forever.

I liked this book, I wanted to love it, but the characters weren’t quite in depth enough for me to feel a true connection to them. It was a sweet story, with some angst- I just wish it were longer and a little more developed. It had a lot of potential, it had a ‘Slammed’ vibe to it. I did get a little choked up at the ending. Overall, not a bad book, but not incredible either.

The most upsetting thing about this story is the lack of character development and the quick character relationship. By chapter 4 both MC's had confessed their undying love for one another. There was little to no build of this relationship. It literally went from week 1 of gawking to the initial hello to week 8 and confessing forever love. You get tid bits of what apparently happened within those critical first few weeks later on in the book but it made no sense and I as a reader just didn't connect. The plot was rather cliché and pretty predicable. Coopers POV seemed to have too much of a female perspective (I've noticed that not all writers can pull off a male POV without it not feeling too laced with estrogen). The ending was "Ahh" cute but really rushed. The story dynamic was new, I liked the idea but it wasn't pulled off right. Like what was the point of making Cooper a trust fund kid when it clearly did not play a part of his character? Anyway - would I suggest, no.

Oh man!! Teach me :) This is another student teacher relationship book and ma I say I loved it.

It was sweet, light and bittersweet book which will keep you holding on to the book till end.
The girl Alli falls in love with cooper and They spend summer together and then BOOM! life throws them in a place where romance is forbidden. He becomes her teacher and she his student.

It talks about the decisions they took an sacrifices they made and in the end to do the right thing.

Their is is sweet, and just perfect :) read it. Lots of twist (:

Tenía muchísimas ganas de leer Teach me, me apetecía mucho conocer a Amy Lynn Steele. Vamos, que estaba dispuesta a enamorarme. Y al principio, así fue.

La novela superó mis expectativas, y me enamoró. Me pareció preciosa, tierna, dulce, emotiva.

Teach me, me estaba gustando mucho. Y yo estaba encantada, ¿cómo no?

description description

Odié a Alli.

"Teach Me Cooper...Teach Me, Teach Me how not to fall in love with you" -Allison Starr

5 Amazing Stars

description

First of all I love this book. This book made me cry, hell until now I'm still crying while I'm writing this review. I need a Kleenex... I can say that this book is different among the other books that student-teacher love story. Because in this book Cooper is willing to sacrifice his dream job for the girl that he love. I love the twist in the story. Actually, I thought Allison will going to die but thankfully she survived and it's because of the love of Cooper for her.

“Then she will fight to survive,” Robert finally said, gripping my shoulder in his hand. “You gave her your heart, son, and now she will fight to keep it beating.”

Thank you Ms. Amy Lynn Steele for making this amazing book, You touch every heart of your readers. This book made us realized that everyone deserves their own Happy Ever After. And I think this is the most important lesson from this book.

“Life will throw a lot at you, so you can count on learning something new every day. I have learned to open my heart and let life teach me whatever it has to offer. Every day is a gift wrapped in the lessons of tomorrow.”

This Book has a special place in my Heart and in my Book of Fame just like the other books that I love the most.:)

At first it was like a typical romance story...summer love story. For the first 50 pages...I said..'wadda typical', but then as the story goes on I couldn't stop myself from reading it. The last 50 pages was my favourite. I just didn't realize it will be so touching and the emotion is so strong. I got teary-eyed while reading it. I think the title is not only resemble the situation where Cooper is Ali's teacher but also means how life teaches cooper to give an unconditional love to Ali. Im a working person and probably will think twice harder if I have to give up my future career and the job that I love so much for the sake of love. Amy Lynn Steele, it was a truly romantic novel. I like the quotation you wrote at the last page : 'Every day is a gift wrapped in the lessons of tomorrow'. I've heard one similar like this somewhere before but to put it as the closing sentence is a nice way to end a touching love story.

Honestly, I thought this book would be about evil cheerleaders, girl swooning over the guy but....... was I ever wrong. I know a lot of you people out there have an opinion so I respect that, here's mine: This book is, although seems like a copy still really good. It actually tells you what is going on, not just what happens at school, I mean those type give you now perspective on the main characters life. I think of her as well, innocent. It seems like she has no voice, all she is, is a bystander. The part that surprised me was when , based on the..... I forgot the name but the thing that tells you what it is all about, it seemed like it would have worked for something else entirely. I may have repeat some things

Is Amy Steele a 14 year old high school girl?
I love that Allison is described as "intelligent", yet being insde her head is awfully similar to listening to a 12 year old gush about her crush in primary school. I could not connect to this girl AT ALL.
I stopped reading a few chapter in, it was all so contrived and it genuinely felt like the author was either 14 when she wrote this or 75 and forgot how human, 17 year old girls think...

My goodness that book went fast I almost don't remember what happened. Really didn't get a chance to feel anything for the characters its like you meet them by name but nothing other than that. Maybe if it didn't go so fast I would have gotten to fall in love with them. Really wouldn't recommend this one unless you are just looking for a sugary sweet book to pass the time.

This was an amazing book! I love student/teacher romances! This is one of the great ones that I will come to and re-read. The characters were awesome and well-developed. Allison was a sweet, spunky seventeen year old. Cooper is definitely boyfriend material, he is sweet, adorable, and just HOT! The secondary character were amazing as well. The ending was perfect. Glad they got their HEA!

I couldn't even finish this. The writing was too simple and the storyline felt rushed. There wasn't much for character development so it was hard to get lost in it. The idea was good but the writing needed a lot of work.

〰️𝗧𝗘𝗔𝗖𝗛 𝗠𝗘〰️
🪶 Autor: Amy Lee Steele.

This novel centers around Allison Starr, a senior in high school, hoping to go onto becoming a writer. She has dreams, she has aspirations - and like the rest of us here, she’s a book lover. She’s staying with her Aunt over her final summer break of high school to give her single father a break as she has done since she lost her mother at a young age; and she starts to visit the beach where a mystery guy takes an interest in her…
A “summer love” blossoms; but what starts out as a simple romance turns into so much more when it’s revealed that Cooper is Allison’s teacher… Mr. Perez.

This book was a re-read for me. I read it a while ago on my Kindle, and I was thinking about it a couple of days ago and decided to pick it up in paperback format. For one reason or another, I doubly enjoyed it this time around and now my copy is well highlighted and has at least twenty sticky tabs sticking out of it. I think this is one of those books that fares better the second time around - everything seems to sit better after you read this one more than once; at least, it was that way for me. Particularly because I couldn't remember too much about the twists that the story took (they're done brilliantly and cause all of the feels). I feel like if you've already read this book and didn't like it that much, you should wait a while and re-read it. I enjoyed it that much the second time around that it's slipped into my favourites list.

Overall, the book does have a very solid plot. It doesn't swap and change in weird spontaneous ways, it doesn't take stupid twists and turns, things aren't dragged out and it definitely doesn't keep boring. Despite the books short length, so much is packed into it that you barely get a breather (which is an absolutely amazing thing). It's fair to say that this lovely author definitely takes you through a plethora of events and pulls you through an even larger plethora of emotions during the span of this book - emotions that you feel in great abundance; I feel it's got to be somewhat difficult to pull a reader into a story featuring a "forbidden relationship" (not for me because these books are a guilty pleasure of mine), but Amy did it perfectly. I felt pulled in right from the first page and felt as if the book was wrapping itself around me and didn't let me go until I'd finished that last page; and even then, it still hasn't left me.
I think that the teacher/student aspect of it was dealt with in a realistic way to be entirely honest - it was cliche in areas, but the cliches lay around the realism of the entire subject and it definitely contributed to making me feel more into the story (and they were good cliches. You can't beat a good, cute cliche). I felt like I was actually in the middle of watching a teacher student relationship and I felt like the issues were dealt with in an extremely mature way by both characters; a way in which is rare to see in a novel like this - normally the student is whiny when she doesn't get her way and starts being, honestly, pathetic. But I felt like Ali truly held herself in this - she wasn't whiny, she wasn't irritating, she wasn't a pathetic little crybaby - she truly showed her age and it made the whole relationship seem, feel and read fantastically; by the end I was completely smitten with the pairs relationship and was completely and utterly smitten.

Throughout the entirety of the novel, we get closer and closer to Cooper and Allison through the dual POV chapters (which was incredibly well crafted and it didn't feel jumpy or strange at all - even when there was a slight time change between chapters; it felt smooth and it flowed really well), and I personally found that I connected to them both right away. I love how Amy wrote them as book lovers and avid readers; and their first conversation is regarding a book. Granted, that theme doesn't come up a lot throughout the book, but the fact that it's placed where it is gave me an excellent push into liking the characters and feeling a grip on them. I loved the characters throughout the entirety of this; I didn't at any point think them annoying or irritating and I didn't mentally wish that they hadn't been written with this character trait or that character trait - I loved the way they were because, as with the rest of the things in this novel, they were well crafted and well rounded.

The author clearly put a lot of thought and work into this novel and it truly shows in the way it's written and the way it's presented. It isn't scrappy, it isn't lazy, it isn't so downright cliche that you want to throw it across the room - it has the right level of realism to it (without being hyper realistic and making the story completely dull to read) and the entire plot just flies away; leaving the heart soaring with a magnitude of feels. I did, I admit, leave this book whimpering out a "that can't be it" ... well, until I realised there's a sequel.

I didn't have any issues with the novel that were big enough to knock it down even a half a star - any issues I had were minor such as "I wish there'd have been more description about his face" or something like that; they weren't enough issues to warrant reducing this from a five star because I truly couldn't see any issues - I enjoyed the book so, so much that I wasn't being picky with it. I lost myself in the story, the storyline and the characters and didn't come out of it - and still haven't - and that's the best thing to have in a novel. Props to Amy Lynn Steele for writing it so amazingly. You rock, girl!

Who would I recommend this for: anyone aged 16+. Basically, if you're interested in this book you should try it out. If the premise interests you, try it - you'll most likely enjoy it.
What would I change about it?: LONGER! I need more of these characters, please!

Honestly, guys, you should check this book out - it's a quick paced, intense, interesting novel with brilliantly thought out plots and excellent characters!

She's crying, he's crying, they're crying, the family is crying, the neighbor's are crying, strangers are crying, crazy cat lady is crying, the drunk on the corner is crying, angels are crying, the pet hamster is crying, the tree moss is crying. Everyone is nonstop crying through the whole book. Why is no one freaking drowning by this point?
