Melu decides to follow his dream, instead of the herd ... The mules had been clip-clopping around the sun-baked hills for generations. They always clip-clopped in the same direction: west towards the setting sun. And they never ventured down to the glittering green sea. But Melu was different. He was always out of step. When the herd clipped, Melu clopped. When the others clopped, Melu clipped. And one day, he decided he wanted to go down to the glittering green sea ...

I love the simplicity of the front cover. It looks good, but it's not confusing and you know right away it's going to be about the mule on the front cover. I loved the illustrations, the colours are simply gorgeous, such lovely shades of yellow and green. At the price, it's not a book that I myself would buy, but that is only due to the price. In every other aspect of the book though, I would add this to my children's book collection. I found it very easy to get into the book, and my 4yo and my 2yo both loved it. They were immediately drawn in by our main character, Melu, and his friends that he meets along the way. I liked that it showed how determination and working together can help you to reach your goal, such as how Melu and his two new friends had to help each other cross the river. My children have already requested it be read again today before bed, and that is a request I am happy to fulfil. A 9 out of 10 from me.
A cute little story about being brave enough to go your own way, chase your dream and yet has cooperation at the same time. The one part that really grated with me though was that, when faced with a problem, the animals just sat down and waited for a solution to present itself. This seemed at odds with the message of the rest of the story.
Well written, repetitive, cute animals, but it doesn't really have a meaning, It tries to tell you not to listen to grumpy others and to cross a river when you don't know how deep it is... I guess crossing rivers is safe.... if there are no crocodiles and the water is not fast running. I just would it to have been a better explained single meaning.

Sometimes when others are clopping you have to clippity, nothing wrong with being the odd ball and nothing wrong with going against the crowd... And if the crowd isn't going where you want to be, then best leave them behind... Don't worry, you'll make new friends.
Great story to read to children about being yourself and following your dreams. Also about meeting others on the way and helping one another to achieve each others dreams or goals. Simply put and cute illustrations.
Some fantastic onomatopoeia and alliteration that make for a fabulous reading-aloud experience: "Sure-hoofed Goat clit-clattered over the rumbly rockslide, Melu clip-clopped close behind".
A lovely picture book for young children. Simple but cute illustrations, and a classic text that encourages children to be themselves. It's okay if you don't want to do what everyone else does. Scholastic NZ and Aus 2012
