We are placed in a sort of future world where technology had advanced, but only areas that guarantee profit. For example, the cosmetic industry which is where our protagonist's (Antoinette) mother works as the CEO. Yet, for the most part, things have not changed. It's in this world that Antoinette is chained to. A paraplegic after a suicide attempt, Antoinette spends her days doing nothing. She had no desire to live before her suicide attempt and no desire to die after it. Sounds great right? Yes, she may not want to die anymore, but neither does she want to move on and live. It's in this world that we are taken to and are told the backstory of why she wanted to die and how she went about it with the help of a very strange company known as Paradis: Clef en main (Paradise: Key in Hand) whose sole motive is to help selected customers to commit suicide. It's a very bizarre company that tests their customers multiple times before selecting them. It definitely creep-ed me out a bit. As Antoinette goes through trial after trail she reveals her inner thoughts on suicide, society, people, human nature, and more to the reader.
While I loved this book I did find the company very odd and it's left unexplained as to what their motive is and why they are so hush hush about it. I also didn't like the way it ended. For a book that spent most of the time talking about the entire suicide process, it ended way too quickly on a supposed "bright note" Things weren't really explained and it takes a while to get into the story.
Yet, one of the best things about this book was Nelly Arcan's writing. It was so sharp and quick. Acerbic really is the right word to use when describing her writing style. This is the type of style I love to read and until now, I've only seen 3 authors do this.
