SAFARI by Julia Fermentto
A novel about young people in Tel-Aviv. Those people are stoned, drunk, careless, emotionally retarded, pretentious and shallow. I'm afraid the story could predict the future of Israeli society. Keeping this assumption in mind, this novel had the obligation to get across a message, a warning. The author choosed to use profanity and sensational language just for cheap thrills and nothing more, and that was a let-down and a miss. I hated the characters and couldn't care less about them. I couldn't care if they would find redemption. A few good ideas and sentences here and there and an excellent chapter near the end (which had nothing to do with the plot) couldn't save the novel from failure. Also, it reminded me of Gadi Taub's Allenby Street, which deals with similar themes. The latter is a much better novel.
