Disgraced British soldier and disenchanted mercenary, Petros Kyriades, is one half of an elite pair of soldiers-for-hire known as 'The Collectors'. William ('Bear') Morris, ex-SAS sergeant, is the other half. Their motto is, “If it's there we will find it, and for the right price recover it.'
Accountant Bernie Cohen cannot recall the first ten years of his life. But with the assistance of a psychiatrist, he exposes an undesirable truth. An abandoned house close to Chernobyl holds the mystery of his past, and Bernie hires The Collectors to retrieve something that should have remained hidden.
The Collectors always play the game by their rules – that is until someone or something forces them to rewrite them.
This is an enjoyable adventure which unfolds in cinematic fashion as we follow the main characters, Petros and Bear, on a number of missions, for a variety of clients. This allows a fair bit of back story to be woven in without slowing the pace. Running parallel to these collections, which take us from Africa to hidden London tunnels, is the story of Bernie Cohen as he gradually recalls a life so disturbing it has remained locked in his memories since childhood. This provides a touching, thoughtful and emotional contrast to the high octane male comraderie of the main story and as the two tales progress it becomes clear that they are set to merge. This is cleverly done, many seemingly unrelated subplots introduce characters which will no doubt have further roles to play in subsequent books. The scenes change rapidly, but throughout, the poignant story of Bernie keeps the readers focus.
A recommended read. I look forward to the next book from Ron Sewell.
I liked this story. But it left many unresolved sub-plots along the way. However, the premise of a "Collector" was very intriguing.
It is always entertaining to vicariously live the many exploits of the independently wealthy "Robin Hood" sort of character. This book certainly fulfilled that role if that is what you are looking for.
What a really great book this turned out to be. Lots of decent characters and a very good detailed storyline. I personally enjoyed this novel from start to finish and look forward to reading the next instalment of the series.
Started out a little slow. The action was never fully explored. After the main storyline began the book got much better. I enjoyed the main characters of PK and Bear. They were well developed and I loved the humor and Comradely. The secondary characters were also well developed. I have seen others discribe this book as filled with action, but to me it wasn't. It was more about the relationship and teamwork of the two characters and their travels. It was an interesting read, but not a great book.
Okay - so this is supposed to be a daring-do sort of big boys adventure. The first section is hardly believable and some of the sentences just rubbed me up the wrong way entirely. I can imagine 13-14 year old boys enjoying the book to a certain extent - but certainly was not for me. Struggled to get through the inane and immature dialogue, improbable situations etc so am unable to recommend.
A pretty good read, but the first half is setup....once you get into the meat of the story it picks up, but I never was very worried for the very capable collectors. The Cherynobl hook pulled me in but it wasn't a very big part of the book which disappointed me a little. Still, worth a gander.
Meh - I couldn't ever really get into this book. The writing style was a bit on the rough side for me and it really took me out of the zone. The idea was interesting, but since I didn't get into it early, kind of just coasted along. That might explain why it was free for the Kindle though.
I really tried to read this ebook, only made 11% into it. Never held my interest and awful story writing that left lots out. With so many books out there had to put this one down and move on.
